Teach Me How To Kiss (1D AU)

Desperate Times

He cut another piece of steak; I could tell he was satisfied with every bite as the corner of his mouth would curl once the flavor sunk in. I watched as Harry used his hands to feed himself and then grab his glass of water; those were the same hands that touched me and made me feel so magical. My eyes immediately drifted further to the sight of his caramel tanned chest peeping through his gray shirt; remembering how smooth and mesmerizing his broad shoulders and back were. It's a shame they were now hidden.

The waiter came to take our dessert order, allowing me to see a flash of those pearly whites as he kindly thanked our server. He was so dreamy and I was smitten. How could he look so cute and be so sensual in secret. I couldn't wrap my head around it. Every moment we spent together was making it harder to think that I had to leave the next day.

"Why do you keep looking at me like that?" he chuckled.

"Like what? I'm not looking at you in any way," I sprung to my defense.

"You have stars in your eyes…"

So he was on to me, but I couldn't help it. Here I was, a simple girl, in Hawaii with an amazing boyfriend who had shown me more wonders on this Island than the actual attractions.Yet, in less than 12 hours I'd have nothing. I wanted to cling on to him to not waste a single second…and that's why I've been called pathetic many times. But I didn't know the rules and boundaries for relationships, clearly.

It had been a month since I'd return from paradise, but I remembered our last dinner as if it were yesterday. Although I missed Harry it was refreshing to see Louis and be inside my school walls again. Lilah was back at Long Beach, however Izzy was nowhere to be found. I heard rumors that she had been casted for a small role in a film…good for her! And on a different note, I had befriended the new girl at school, Janet Rogers. Having been a former new girl once, I thought I'd be that friend that Izzy never truly was to me.

Janet reminded me of myself two years ago; shy at first but an overall nice person. She came from a military family, both her dad and uncle were in the Marines. Sadly her mother had passed away a few years back which compelled me to invite her over often and have dinner at my house. She took a liking to my mother; it was mutual.

Things with Harry were a little difficult as was to be expected. We'd text often and talked once or twice a week. From how Janet had explained it, I almost felt like one of those military wives; missing my man like crazy and hoping to talk to him again sooner each time. Unlike those strong women, I had the privilege to call and reach Harry when I wanted, it just wasn't always the best time. I learned to wait for his call as I never knew if I'd catch him in the middle of class, working late long hours or him simply missing my call.

For being my first real relationship, this long distance deal SUCKED! But I had my last year of high school to keep me distracted, along with the student council, my friends and let's not forget my job. Although, I was unsure about my current employment. Janet had recently gotten hired as a server at a remodeled restaurant that was still hiring.

Janet worked as a waitress over the summer at her previous job, while I wasn't sure serving ice cream would be considered the same level of experience. Though once I heard the earnings would possibly double mine, I thought I'd at least give it a shot. So on a particular afternoon, I had an interview with the manager after school. Before driving over I quickly swung by the house to switch into something more professional.

Walking through the main entrance I immediately fell in love with the scene of this place. It looked modern and definitely attracted a younger crowd. I envisioned myself working here as a turning point of my adulthood. Now I had more confidence after my recent 'transition' and I felt like this suited a more mature Brynn Rael.

The restaurant had a mystic African safari theme, decked with lots of chrome accents and marbled tables. In the center stood an island bar with fluorescent lighting underneath a glassed mini waterfall. Gosh, I wanted to start already! I walked over to the empty bar to see if anyone was there. Standing there for a few minutes, in my black skirt and lavender blouse, I felt ready to impress whoever should come my way.

A gallant bartender showed up with a box clanging bottles. I politely asked him where the manager was. He seemed older, perhaps around Harry's age or so. In fact, he was quite attractive with his bright amber eyes. I smiled a little as I was reminded of Harry once he directed me to the back.

"Good luck! I'm Knox by the way," he kindly introduced himself.

"Knox?" I found that to be an uncommon name.

"It's Zayn but everyone calls me Knox," he said while opening the door.

There I was greeted by another friendly and much older man. Philip, the manager, had me fill out an application to have on file. He understood that I had little experience, yet he was impressed that I had made assistant manager to the rinky-dink shop. Other than liking my personality he was willing to give me a break, but I also had Janet's high recommendation to thank. I'd start training in the weekend by shadowing her and helping the other servers. I had sadly given my two weeks notice at my other job believing that this was a good decision.

My time was done. I had passed my training and resigned my first job. I actually enjoyed waitressing. Even when I shadowed Janet, I had made some decent tips; thanks to her sharing heart. For now I worked in the weekends till midnight or so. My boss was hilarious and pretty awesome to say the least, while the rest of the crew made the nights entertaining as well.

The only problem was the weekends, they were my only chances to talk with Harry. Having a different schedule made it harder, at times I'd make quick runs to the bathroom to catch his call. I couldn't always do that as it got pretty busy after 7 o'clock.

By now everyone knew I had a boyfriend and even proceeded to tease me whenever I was caught texting. I'd hardly seen his cousin Lilah except when she came once with Louis on a date. Dates...how I wish I could simply go out with Harry or snuggle up to a movie like normal couples do. Believe me I saw plenty of couples on their dates at the restaurant, that only made me more depressed and lonely.

One night, as I waited for one of the bartenders to make my drinks, I quickly checked my phone to see if I had any texts, then frowned in disappointment.

"No text from your man yet?" Zayn interrupted.

"Hmmm no," I tried to seem unaffected.

"Yeah long distance relationships are tricky like that. I had one once but we remained as friends…not that I'm trying to discourage you or anything," he added.

"Thanks. It's just really hard I guess."

"Cheer up! I'm sure you'll hear from him by the end of the night."

I appreciated the pep talk. Normally I didn't care for honey eyes, but Zayn's looked pretty cool right next to the blue neon lights. I collected my drinks and went back to the table to continue with the customer's order. As the night progressed the families disappeared and the young couples and singles took over the place.

After I came back from my 10 minute break, Janet broke down in full detail about how she exchanged numbers with a cute guy she waited on. She gave me a full description of the guy as we picked up the dishes around the tables. Somehow we ended up talking about our fellow coworkers and their hotness ratings. Janet thought Gabe, the busser, was pretty cute. He looked like another typical surfer guy, which also was the same description of the guy she swapped numbers with.

When she asked me who I thought was a number 10, I didn't have an accurate answer. I had a boyfriend I was madly in love with; I had no time to entertain thoughts of who was hot or not. Of course she insisted, for the sake of conversation, I mention at least one guy. I looked around the vast room, glancing over some of the waiters and then over at the bar.

Staring at the pair of bartenders as they cleaned their area I caught sight of Zayn. He was wiping down the counter and happened to look right at me. I quickly turned my head as I gathered the remaining dirty utensils and moved on to the next table. It is one thing to know you're surrounded by attractive people and not care versus actually entertaining the thought. It was a stupid game to begin with.

"So that wasn't weird at all…who were you looking at?" Janet asked while peeking back at the bar. "Zayn? You think he's cute? I mean he obviously is and… he's still looking over here you know."

I barely turned my head to steal a glimpse and caught him chatting with his friend, arms crossed, and yes staring back at me. No no no…no temptation please! Why did my boyfriend have to live so far away? Suddenly as if I had called him with my thoughts, I felt my phone vibrate. I had just received his text.

Thinking about you, call me when you get off work. I love you.

Perfect timing, I was focused and determined to not get sidetracked like that again. I had to endure this torture at least till prom season.

As employees, we had an amazing discount and free meals when working on the clock. After school Janet and I would sometimes head over and do our homework there at one of the booths. It was pretty slow around 4 o'clock and not as noisy, perfect for studying with a nice Frappuccino. This time Louis joined us as he was waiting for Lilah to meet us, once she got into town. Typically the bar wasn't open during the early hours on the week days so there were no distractions.

Unfortunately as I studied with my friends, I noticed Zayn walk in with a white undershirt and messy bed hair. Maybe it was a good thing that every time I saw him it made me miss Harry that much more. I continued on with my homework but couldn't stop from looking in his direction. As my stupid luck would have it, he caught me a few times with his grin increasing more and more. Great, I just made things even more awkward!

"Hey guys, what's up?" Zayn asked inviting himself. He shook Louis's hand having already met him and handed us a flyer. "If you guys are interested, I know it's a school night and all, but a buddy of mine is playing at this party tonight."

"Lilah would like that I bet," Louis announced already sold on the idea.

"I'm in!" Janet agreed.

"Excellent, I'll catch you guys later."

It did genuinely sound like a great idea but then that awkward feeling came back when I watched him watch me as he set up the bottles. Uh no!

"Nice, I wonder if Niall would want to meet up there tonight," Janet thought aloud.

"I'm sorry, did you say Niall?" I asked bewildered.

"Yeah, he's the guy I told you about the other night; we exchanged numbers."

"You didn't tell me his name I guess…"

"Why, do you know him?" Janet seemed confused.

I didn't know how to respond to that. I mean there was so much complicated history there. I hadn't heard from him since our last 'date' and there was nothing to warn her about since I knew he was a 'good guy'... now. Still, it was weird. I dared look at Louis, who obviously knew what I was thinking, and he shook his head signaling not to 'go there'.

"We're old friends, I just haven't heard from him in a long time. You just caught me by surprise is all," I swallowed what felt like sand stuck in my throat.

I was already dressed for tonight's party and with a half hour to kill before picking Janet up. We were going to meet with Louis and Lilah at the party around 8:30. I already predicted my mood for the evening as I'd be surrounded by attractive singles and couples. Between Louis dancing with Lilah and now Janet meeting up with Niall, I was back to being the odd woman out. Missing Harry again like a sad loner, I'll be the girl staring at her phone while texting like an anti-social introvert. Oh goody!

Lying on my bed I kept remembering my last night with Harry again…

After dinner we took a long romantic stroll on the beach. The day had transformed to night with the lights and the music sounding, it was my favorite time of day. Perhaps because it always reminded me of how we met. We found a pretty spot, not too far from the dim lighting of one of the torches. I sat down over my spread Maxi dress and Harry sat behind wrapping his arms around me.

His face was nuzzled in my hair as his fingers caressed my arms. I was so relaxed and almost melancholy. I didn't want to talk about the fact that I would soon be leaving and that this was going to be the hardest thing ever.

"Remember the first time we met?"

"Of course, I spotted a pretty girl by the fire and just couldn't help myself," he chuckled

"I thought you looked pretty cute in that hoodie and when I saw your dimples I about melted."

"Women go crazy over dimples, I don't get it," he shrugged innocently.

"And what about our first kiss at the park, what were you thinking then?"

"Oh man, I was a nervous wreck," he admitted.

"Really? I thought you were super chill. I on the other hand…"

"Yeah you seemed pretty nervous too. Hah, but the look on your face when I came back to really lay one on ya..."

"You made me so mad, just leaving like that!"

"So I heard. You were rambling off for a while before I said anything," he squeezed me.

"Well, I wanted to be kissed! You were such a tease!"

"What did you think about that day in the kitchen, with the chocolate?"

"Wow, you had me on edge…literally."

"I was just testing you to see what you liked. See, you have this goody girl image but you like to be daring every once in a while…am I right?" he asked.

I found it unnecessary to answer that, he knew me evidently. "Only with you though," I smiled.

Harry turned my head with his hand and kissed me softly. I leaned back against him. My eyes had stars in them again as I gazed at him and smiled. He gave me that warm grin and continued to glide his hands down my arms. I wanted this moment to last forever. Soon the real stars began to show, and we just stayed there in our little twilight zone.

"So here we are…" I hinted.

"Here we are indeed…perfect setting wouldn't you say?"

"It sure is," I giggled.

Beating around the bush didn't help how I was actually feeling, regardless, the thought of sex on the beach seemed like the perfect ending to our rendezvous.

"Are you wanting ME to initiate something?" he gave a sly grin.

"Actually, I thought I was kind of insinuating it first."

"You're too cute," Harry laughed while hugging me tightly.

He began brushing my hair over to the side, exposing the nape of my neck. Like a true Casanova he covered my entire shoulder with tender kisses while tickling my back with his fingertips. In a gutsy attempt to move things along I grabbed his hand and placed it over my heart.

"It's racing just as fast as mine." He whispered.

I turned around to have my turn for a kiss. I would miss him and everything we had done together. We made love one last time, sand and all. And that was now my new favorite memory. Sex under the stars was something not even the novels could put into words.

My phone kept going off; apparently I was now late to pick up my friend.

"Niall said he wasn't going to make it, he already had previous engagements he couldn't get out of," Janet pouted.

I was feeding off her sadness because that meant I wouldn't be left alone for the rest of the night. The house was monumental, quite the bash for the rich and famous. Maybe Janet would meet someone else here and then we could forget about the possibility of dating Niall. Ah and who should I happen to spot but Gabe and a few of our coworkers.

Gabe seemed equally attracted to Janet as they timidly talked to one another. Meaning, I was back to square one. Sola. I felt a tap on my shoulder but turned I saw no one.

"Can't believe you fell for that."

"Zayn, hey, how are you?"

"I'm glad you guys made it. What do you think of the music?"

"It's great! He's so good," I responded like I knew what I was talking about.

"Can I get you guys some drinks?"

"Yes please!" Janet joined while gesturing for me to go with him.

I shook my head. What, was she insane?! That was only asking for trouble.

"Come Brynn, I'll show you how to make an Orgasm."

"Excuse me, what?!" I almost choked.

"Relax, it's a drink. A very popular one amongst the ladies," Zayn assured me.

"Yeah I'm sure…this is a bad idea," I mumbled.

"Bring me one!" Janet didn't hesitate to remind me.

Of course this amazing house had a stellar built in bar and bartenders, friends of Zayn. I followed him around the counter and soon found myself looking forward to making my first drink. He set out the bottles as he began showing me the measurements by eye and gave me a set of steel cups to mimic his actions. I couldn't handle the cups as smoothly as he did without spilling a bit.

"And there, you've made your first Screaming Orgasm."

"Why is it called that? It's ridiculous," I shook my head.

"I don't know. I didn't name it! But go ahead and give it a try," he insisted.

I took a sip and found it surprisingly good, delicious even. "Wow it IS good, I don't know about the screaming part though."

He laughed. "Maybe that's what happens after the 3rd one."

"Uh huh," I rolled my eyes and continued to drink. "I have to be careful with you."

"What, me?" he smiled innocently. "I haven't done A THING! I can't help it if sometimes I'm attracted to my coworkers."

"Yeah well, I have a boyfriend, buddy!" I tried not to smile but I couldn't help be flattered by his comment.

"I know, but there's no rule that says I can't look at you. Look but don't touch, right? That's the bro code."

"Whatever code. I'm just making sure you haven't forgotten."

"No, I haven't. We're friends. We CAN be friends right?" he said surrendering his hands.

"Yes. Friends."

"So do you want to learn how to make Sex on the Beach?" he laughed.

If looks could kill, I tell you, he'd be on the floor. I grabbed my drinks and walked back towards my friends. He was obviously joking but I took it as a warning, his charming gaze had trouble written all over it. I had to flee fast.

I handed Janet her drink as she danced with Gabe, now a trio, as I joined them. I tried to erase the last 10 minutes or so from my memory but all I could see was Zayn's flirting eyes. Damn him! It was almost 3 months since I had last seen Harry. Was I that impatient? How would this be from here to 2 or 4 years? Something needed to change. I either had to move or visit him very soon.

"So can friend's dance?" a familiar voice asked.

"Are you stalking me now?"

"No, since I invited you here. I'm just being hospitable and offering a dance."

"Fine," I agreed.

"Sheesh, you say that like it's a punishment or something," Zayn frowned momentarily.

"I'm sorry. It's just I miss my boyfriend, and coming to places like this reminds me of how hard it is without him."

"Like I said, I get that it's difficult," he agreed while dancing in front of me.

The music changed to a slower song and like magnets the couples sprung out everywhere.

"So is this going to be awkward or can you handle it?" Zayn perked an eyebrow while extending a hand.

What was it with people challenging me with this phrase "can you handle it?". I'm a very capable person. Did I appear weak or something? To prove it, I got a little closer and accepted his hand.

"See, this is pretty innocent right?"

"Sure, says the person without the guilt trip," I mumbled.

"Come on Brynn, you're making a big deal out of nothing. Would you dance with any of your other coworkers?"

"Yeah."

"So what's the difference?" he asked.

"Well…" Hmm for me to actually answer that would be admitting that I found him somewhat attractive and interesting. Which in itself wasn't bad, it was normal. The bad part was that we were dancing, exchanging glances and smiles. The bad part was that no matter how difficult it was to be in a long distance relationship with my true love, I wanted to be one of the few and faithful. But the truth also was that in some weird way, Zayn reminded me of how I felt when I looked at Harry and the guilt killed me a little every night.

"He's a lucky guy!" Zayn concluded.

"Oh please, don't do that!"

"I'm just being honest…hold on! If you are struggling through so much guilt and yet you're still dancing with me then…" he looked straight into my hazy eyes. "Okay, I'll shut up."

"Thank you," I couldn't wait for this song to be over.

Right?
