Mandolin Rain

Seventeen

Elliot's POV

The trip is almost to a close, well we're almost to the campsite. We struggled a bit before we left, I had decided to put the top of the jeep back on just in case of rain, and Harry looked really tied, I knew he wouldn't be able to sleep with it off on the freeway. It was hard to not listen to the paps yelling at as, taking our pictures and of course, teasing Harry about how he's a womanizer. I've only know him for two months but I know for a fact he's not one.

Harry fell asleep almost twenty minutes into the trip. I caught myself looking at him from time to time, so peaceful lost in his own dream world. Before I turn off to the gravel road that will take us to our campsite, I decide to wake him up. I'd rather not but I also don't want him to wake up when we arrive and be surrounded by my older brothers and crazy cousins.

I slow down to turn and come to a stop after I have competed it. I turn to Harry who, before I can even wake him responds, “I'm awake.”

“Okay them, we continue!” I resume speed and drive down the bumpy road.

Harry sits up and rubs his eyes adjusting to the light and his surroundings. “So is this really a camping trip or are you planning to kill me out here?' He asks laughing.

“Well you did drink the coffee this morning.” I raise my eyebrows at him. He instantly stops laughing and looks at me all wide eyed. “I'm just messing with you Harry! Jeez!” I elbow him as he dramatically feigns in pain.

---------------------

We finally pull up the the clearing in the woods, not a large clearing but enough to pitch a bunch of tents and have people hang out. It's the same place we've been camping at for the last four years. Just beyond the pines there's a lake, usually freezing all year round I've been told but it's a tranquil place to chill. I love it. We get away from TV, radio, media, everything that takes away from your soul. Just you, nature, and family.

I pull up next to what I know is my brothers old truck and hop out. Harry is a little bit slower then me but it's been a while since I've seen everyone. “Moss!” I yell at his turned back and give him little time to turn around before I jump on him. He gives me a big bear hug and yells my name. I turn to start giving everyone hugs, saving the biggest ones for River and Phoenix.

I turn to see Harry awkwardly leaning against the jeep, not quite sure what to do so I catch his attention and wave him over to where I'm standing. I don't think I've ever seen Harry so shy, but I can tell he is at this moment.

Once he joins us I pull him next to me, “Harry these are my brothers, Moss, Phoenix, and River, or James, Ethan, and Andrew, whichever names you prefer to call him. And these are some of my cousins,” I point everyone out as I go down the line. “Jessica, Jazzy, Mike, Penny, Tim, Poppy, Stu, Orion, Vic, Zadie, Morgan, Lauren, Mark, and Taylor. Everyone this is Harry.” I make a dramatic showing of Harry to everyone's amusement.

“Hi.” He makes an awkward wave and looks at me to save him. Everyone is already engaged in their own worlds, talking and chit-chatting to each other.

“That wasn't so bad was it?” I whisper to him as I get closer and pull him towards the jeep to unload our stuff.

“I won't remember any of their names!” He whines at me.

“You'll be fine, not everyone is here yet, and no one will mind if you can't remember their names. Just remember my brothers names or they'll kill you in your sleep.” I say to add dramatic effect.

“What?” He stops grabbing the things I'm pulling out for him and looks at me.

“Oh my goodness, Quit taking everything so seriously Harry. Lighten up.” I throw my sleeping bag at him to bring him back to reality.

“Where are we sleeping at anyway?” He asks.

“OH, I forgot to mention, we won't be sleeping together. We're always separated, girls tent and boys tent. So you're with the boys!” I try to say cheerfully.

“Awesome.” He doesn't try to hid his non-existent excitement.

After a few more of my cousins show up, the real hippie ones, Lynx, and Clover arrive in true fashion, long skirts, tank tops, and flower headbands, I can't make this stuff up if I tried. I turn to Harry and he can't help but wink at me, he thought all my cousins would be like this.

“We brought the paint!” Clover shouts out to everyone as they get out of their moms van.

Harry turns to me, “The paint?”

“Giant paint slip'n'slide. Clover, the blonde one and Lynx, the redhead, sisters, make an organic paint so it doesn't hurt the environment so we all get our swimsuits on and instead of water we throw a bunch of paint on giant plastic sheets and slide into the water. It's the most fun you'll have in a while.” I guarantee him.

“A paint slip'n'slide? This is weird. But I'll try anything once.”

“You will love it.” I assure him. “Lets get changed.” I race towards my tent to find my bag and old swimsuit. The paint won't hurt the environment, but I'm not wearing my white suit in it. I slip into my flip flops and exit the tent looking for Harry. I spot him easily, his inked skin makes it easy for me to see him. Some of my cousins have tattoos but not as many as Harry does.

He stands nervously shifting his weight on his feet, looking like a lost child. I walk up behind him and cover his eyes with my hands. “Guess who?” I ask him as he grabs my arms and spins around to face me. “Don't be so shy Harry, let loose, have fun.” I remind him for the millionth time. “My family is nice.”

“I know, I just don't know anyone other then you, Joe, and Rose so just walking up to a random person isn't the easiest thing.” He admits.

“I know but just do your best. I'll be with you the whole time, whenever you need me. Now lets go get painted!” I grab his hand and pull him along with me as he laughs.

-------------------------------

The paint slip n' slide is always an adventure. Someone always gets hurt, usually everyone gets paint everywhere and we try to get clean, it never really works. I usually always find dried paint even a week later.

I finish ringing out mine and Harry's suit in the lake and hang it out to dry. I noticed Harry talking to my brothers. It always nerve wrecking to talk to talk to them, they're big and their deep voices intimidate people but in all actuality they're just big teddy bears. I hang back and assess the situation, Harry looks like he's having fun smiling and my brothers don't look too annoyed with him being here.

“So you and Harry huh?” Clover asks as she sneaks up from behind.

“What? Oh no, just friends.” I assure her.

“Interesting, in the last four years you've never brought anyone here, and this year you not only bring a friend, but a friend whose a boy, and whose famous.” She winks at me.

“I.” I start to say but I can't think of anything. “I have nothing to say.” I smile.

“That's what I thought.” She picks up the box of leftover paint and walks to her car. I quickly follow her, Clover is only a year older then me and out of all my girl cousins, she's my go to girl.

“You think its that obvious that I like him?” I ask as I come up next to her.

“I knew it.” She smiles. “UM, not really, I've known you for a while so I know what you are like when you like someone but I don't know if everyone will notice it. He seems really nice.” She pops the button to open the back of the van and sets the paint inside.

“He is really nice.”

“You think you're cut out for that lifestyle though?" She asks.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, he's a celebrity, it's not just going to go away El. Cameras will follow him, tabloids will jump at the chance to rip him apart, girls will always be throwing themselves at him. It's a lot to handle.” She reminds me, its something I think about everyday.

“Well it doesn't matter, we're just friends, I don't even know if he likes me.” Lies, all lies.

“Seriously? He's camping without electricity and running water with you and your crazy family for a weekend. And I've only seen him around you for an afternoon. Trust me girl, he's smitten. He's keeps looking at you right now.” She smiles at me, I don't dare turn around to face him. It would make me more then embarrassed, he would know I'm talking about him.

“Well, what should I do?” I ask like a tween. I'm twenty but things aren’t usually this complicated.

“Just let things happen naturally. Hang out with him tonight and all weekend. You know no matter who he meets, he'll always come back to you this weekend. Let's help get dinner ready.” She changes the subject and pulls me towards the picnic tables.

Please do a sequel!

@All-is-on
Ah thank you!! I'm super excited that you're reading my other stories, Liam's story needs a bit more looking back at it but it was my first! And a lot of people don't like how I ended it, I've been thinking about adding a bonus chapter for a while but I'm all wrapped up in Niall's story at the moment! :)

This story (and especially its ending) were even better than the Liam one!! I can't wait to read the Louis story while I wait for the next Niall update! I seriously can't get enough of your writing!!
