Chapter 9

Ellie Hoover

I sat patiently at the stone topped breakfast bar while nibbling on a few crackers Harry had set out. I could not eat as the fluttery sensation of butterflies had already filled my stomach. I was beyond anxious for my arrival in Holmes Chapel. I was planning on locking myself inside my grandparent’s house for the longevity of my stay, but knowing my grandmother, she would drag me out of the house by my ears if she had to. What about Harry? He certainly was making an effort with me, but would he want anything to do with me once we got into the town. Was he just doing this for my grandmother? I had to stop dwelling in my mind; it was a dangerous place I often got too caught up in.

Occupying such a small body, I struggled to clear myself off the barstool. Once I stabled myself on the marble flooring, I shifted to the living room. I looked around and took in my surroundings, saving them to memory. The walls were covered in a unique forest green, which fabricated an image of the captivating eyes Harry possessed. Ever since the first day I met him at Pearlman Media, I had been looking everywhere but his eyes in fear of getting lost in their unending depth and vivacity. I had the curves of his lips, the placement of his dimples, the shapes of his eyebrows, the width of his nose- I had it all engraved in my mind by now and we barely really knew each other.

I walked over to the fireplace, the center of the big room. The mantle served as a shelf for framed memories with friends and family members. On the far left, Harry’s dimples made appearance with girl who resembled the same features, a family member I was guessing. The next one to the right contained Harry and the other four famous guys I recognized. In the next one over, Harry and the girl from the first photograph posed with an older woman and man. Maybe his immediate family, I thought? The last one held Harry again sitting with an impressive blond at his side.

“My mom thought it would make this place feel more at home if I had those up there,” Harry’s deep voice startled me, something he had done a lot.

I turned around to see him with a new, worn down duffle bag in hand.
“Who are they? Your family?”

He nodded. “That is my sister, Gemma. And the boys. Gemma, my mom, my stepdad, and I. And then my girlfriend and I,” he said as he pointed to each one.

“Your house is lovely. I doubt you decorated it yourself though,” I smiled, looking around once more.

Harry laughed. “I hired someone to do that for me. Does that count?”

“Not in the least bit.”

“Well are you done destroying my pride because we should probably get a move on.”

“Lead the way,” I said as I followed Harry back through the kitchen to another door, which opened to the garage full with three cars. Harry used his long legs to stride over to the driver’s side of a black Range Rover. I rolled my eyes at the sight.

“What was that for?” He asked once I managed to get myself into the leather seat beside
him.

“Everyone who has money has a Range Rover,” I faced him.

“You don’t,” Harry shot back as we drove out of the gates that closed his house off to the public.

My eyebrow rose in response. “How do you know what I drive and how do you know if I have money?”

He kept his eyes on the road and concentrated on the road. “I saw your Jeep keys in your apartment, which I know for a fact is not cheap, especially with your view. I have also noticed a few of your items which happen to be dear.”

I bit the inside of my check, thinking of what to say next because well, he got me there.

“What do you do for a living? At 21 you must be successful. Your grandparents are extremely proud of you. I can tell you that. Nan beams about you to my mom all the time and my mom the same back. It’s nice to see them so happy.” He beat me to the next thought.

“I own a business,” I muttered and looked forward. There was a long pause.

“Are you going to elaborate?” Harry finally asked.

“Are you truly interested?” I shot back. I didn’t want him to make conversation with him just because he felt bad for me or because he felt obligated to because of my grandmother.

He looked at me for a brief second and I caved, my eyes meeting his truly confused and full of unnamed emotions. “Why wouldn’t I be?” He focused back on the road in front of us.

“What type of business has the honor of your ruling?”
I couldn’t help but let a giggle escape my mouth as I shook my head.

“You’re a cheeky bastard, I hope you know that. I own an online clothing company. Stone Remains Clothing Company.”

He turned to me once more, but this time when I dared to look into his eyes, they were painted with surprise and glee. “You better not be taking a piss with me.”

I laughed, “I’m not, I promise. I started the company when I was 18. Designed a few things for one of my business projects my junior year at University of Washington and it grew from there.”

“That’s crazy. Zayn wears your stuff all the time. I have a two of items as well.”
“Well, you’re welcome for providing your life with amazing apparel.”

He smiled and shook his head. I caught myself staring at his deep left dimple as his face was replete with pure emotions of joy and pride. I thought that’s what it was.

We continued to talk for another twenty minutes about Harry, mostly all the places he's been to. I couldn't help but feel a rush of anxiety when Harry mentioned, "There's no place like home, though." Where was my home really? I couldn't believe we were on our way to home. I couldn't believe I was letting a stranger-acquaintance or childhood best friend drive me home alone in the car. Not my home surely. My home was Washington. My home was not the beginnings of a new Ellie, not the remnants of a young gray eyed girl I only remembered from pictures.

After fighting a hard battle with my eyes to keep them open, I felt myself drift into a state of relaxation and temporary unconsciousness.
