Chapter 11

Harry Styles

“I’m home,” I yelled as I entered through the front door. I was enveloped in a comfortable warmth and presented with the smell of apples and cinnamon walking through my mom’s house, taking off my coat along the way.

“Harry, dear,” my mom smiled, setting down her book and rising from her chair to hug me.

“Mum,” I said, kissing her on the cheek. “Hi Robin,” I said as I saw him rising from his chair to greet me as well.

“What took you so long? I thought your flight came in early this morning,” my mom asked after we all got comfortable in the family room. It was one of my favorite rooms of the whole house; it was so unlike mine with pictures everywhere and such a homely feel. The room screamed pride and joy from the walls to the tables; but it was comfortable. It reminded me of family and home, two things that could easily be forgotten or missed on the road.

I cleared my throat. “I waited for Ellie at the airport and drove her back to Dan and Beth’s. Beth made breakfast.”

“Ellie Hoover?” Robin cut in.

“Ellie Hoover,” I repeated.

“Does she remember you?” My mom asked with excitement with reaching her eyes.

“No, but I think she knows we used to be friends. She believes me.” I chuckled as I remembered the smile I had left her with no more than thirty minutes prior.

“That’s great, dear. You know how Beth has been since the accident. She’s always worrying about El,” my mom frowned. “How is she, Ellie that is, all grown up.”

I smiled, something I had been doing a lot of that week with Ellie to blame. “She’s so much different, mum. Just the way she carries herself. And the way she talks. And the way she looks. I am pretty sure she has more tattoos than me-a sleeve on her right arm. And she has her nose pierced. She’s quite fit. She’s still curious and funny. But she’s quieter and observant and always thinking and I think guarded. I’m not sure. She’s so different and so the same at the same time. Oh, and she has an apparel company she started. I even have some of her clothes without even knowing it. She is doing quite well for herself. I’m proud. I think she is warming up to me.”

My mom sat still on her plush teal and gold detailed chair grinning but not saying anything. I, clueless, looked over at Robin, whose actions mirrored my mothers. Christ, I had said too much, I thought. I hadn’t even realized it, but it felt so good.

Finally my mom spoke up, “Well, you should bring her around sometime. We would really enjoy that. Oh! And your sister is coming in two days. She was ecstatic when I told her El would be here for Christmas.”

“I’m taking her out around town tomorrow.”

“Just don’t overwhelm her, Harry,” Robin said.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m knackered, I’m going to go take a nap. Possibly a fifteen hour nap.” I got up and grabbed my bag by the door.

“I’m making dinner at six tonight. Wake your arse up for that,” my mom yelled.

“Goodnight mom. Goodnight Robin.”

“Harry!”

I laughed climbing up the familiar stairs in my brown boots. My hand traced up the familiar railing I would use to slide downstairs as a child. There were so many memories in this house-in the town I couldn’t forget. How could I forget? These memories and people shaped me into who I am today, half of me the world is able to truly see. One of those people being Ellie Hoover.

I remembered I hadn’t called Hallie since Friday, but it was only four in the morning in California. I didn’t know what I was doing with her. She was an amazing girl and I didn’t have any problems dating her, but I couldn’t help to think she deserved something better than our current situation.

Ellie. I couldn’t get her out of my mind. She was all I could think of this week. I thought of her more than Hallie. I felt like a schoolboy with his first crush while talking to Robin and mum. It’s like I couldn’t stop talking to her. I wasn’t sure if I was falling for her already or if I was just so excited to have my first ever best friend back. There was no doubt in my mind I craved her, but what man wouldn’t? She was incredibly sexy without trying. Was that what gravitated me toward her so often? I knew one thing for sure though-I was going to make her stay here memorable.

Once I reached start of the second story I turned left down the hall to my old room. I took a deep breath and my eyes glanced around the light blue painted room; a queen size bed was set in against the wall in front of me with a gray and white striped comforter. My mom hadn’t changed a thing, other than my bedspread, since I left to travel the world.

I set my duffel bag down at the foot of my bed and collapsed into the freshly made bed. Within minutes of my eyelids down casting my eyes into further darkness, I fell into a deep and well needed sleep.

When I woke up, I expected the room to be blacked out in darkness; however, my surroundings were easily noticeable. The room was lit enough, but not completely. I lifted my neck, twisting it to the left and saw the white curtains, brightened by the sunlight outside. Shit, what time is it, I thought. I stood up from my bed, still in the clothes of the day before-boots, long sleeve, and all. My bandana had slipped off in my sleep and was probably buried in the depths of the numerous unnecessary pillows my mom kept on every bed. I retrieved my phone out of my duffel bag. Once it was lit I looked at the time and saw numerous messages delivered from the morning and night. Yes, the morning. It was 11 in the morning and I had overslept through dinner and breakfast, something my mom was never too fond of. But, sensing her happiness when I told her about Ellie, I was positive she would let my absences slide this time.

After replying to messages from friends, including the incessant questions from the boys, I walked into the hallway toward the bathroom to take a shower. The boys knew I had planned on taking Ellie home. After our first encounter and the following one at the club, the boys made me explain everything. They didn’t really know her and they didn’t exactly understand the whole situation-hell, I wasn’t even sure if I understood it all myself; however, they were still asking about how things were going.

I felt the buildup of stress and frustration evaporate past my skin as the steaming water cascaded down my uncovered body. The time I had in Holmes Chapel were always welcomed by me. It was almost like I was in another world in the town. People knew the real Harry, the Harry I was before I was famous. It was nice to get away from the craze of the world every so often. It was relaxing. I was sure Ellie would make this holiday even better.

I took my last step off the stars onto the main floor and immediately sensed vacancy set about the house. I roamed into the kitchen and found a note lying on the kitchen counter from my mom, explaining that she was out shopping. I figured Robin was working. Ellie! I thought. I quickly made it to the front door, grabbing my coat and keys along the way. I locked the door after I stepped into the frigid December air and quickly got into the driver’s side of my black SUV. It took me twenty minutes to reach the yellow stoned house behind a withering winter garden.

I got out of the car and worked my way to the front door knocking on it lightly. I was greeted by a skinny white hair man with the same recognizable gray eyes.

“Hello, Dan. Is El here?”

“Sorry, she’s at the bakery. Poor girl was pulled out of the house my Beth,” he said with a slight smile evident on his face.

“Alright. Thanks though. I’ll see you soon.” I turned to leave but Dan stopped me.

“Be careful with her alright? She may seem tough but she’s still broken. She’s held it all in all these years.”

I nodded, fully intending to fix her.

I parked my car on the curb across the street from Beth’s bakery, the same bakery I used to work at with Ellie. The bell chimed as I opened the door into the small shop with the smell freshly baked goods wafting through the air.

“I’d like to buy all your finest desserts you have to offer in this fine establishments,” I mimicked in my best posh voice.

Ellie lifted her head from the book she was reading and her eyes widened to the point I was able to see the entirety of the gray rings. “Harry, what are you doing here?”

“Well I said tomorrow and if you don’t know how time works, tomorrow is today,” I replied, smiling.

“Never go into education.” She smiled and shook her head.

“Well, I am taking you out today for our first adventure of firsts.”

“What?” Ellie asked confused.

“Harry, I thought I heard your voice. What are you doing here?” Beth walked in from the kitchen in the back.

“Morning Beth-”

“Afternoon now. Who doesn’t know time now?” Ellie interrupted.

I gave her a playful glare. “Afternoon, Beth. I was wondering if I could steal Ellie for the rest of the day.”

“Of course, dear. Not much of a problem at all.”

Ellie was the one glaring at me now, but I could tell a part of her as thanking me for relieving her from her time at the bakery.

Once she had put her apron in the back and grabbed her coat and purse, we stepped back outside to the bleak winter weather.

“Parky outside isn’t it?” I asked as we crossed the street. I look over at her, hands in her coat pockets and face buried in her scarf.

“Where are we going?” She asked, ignoring my attempts to start a conversation.

“Always so curious, aren’t you?”

“Curiosity is human,” she shot back.

“Point well made. The only answer I have for you is that today will be filled with firsts for you.”

“What does that even mean?”

“You’ll see,” I winked as I started the car back on the road.
