Make It Stop ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Twenty-Four.

“Are you still mad?” Luke asked me early Monday morning as I got in his car, not bothering to give him a kiss hello.
“Yeah.” I mumbled, my eyes finding their way out the window as he began driving. He sighed deeply, nodding as he turned the radio down.
“I don’t get why it matters.” He quietly spoke, more to himself than I. Deciding not to answer, I shook my head. “It’s not like we’re fucking.” He pointed out, causing me to bite my lip.
“It matters because it makes me sad.” I glanced at him. Knuckles white, and gripping the steering wheel tightly. “You’re supposed to care when I get sad.” Luke’s hard gaze softened, his lips falling out of a purse and into a frown, his grip loosening.
“Baby.” He mumbled. “I do care. Don’t think I don’t.” He shook his head, to which I rolled my eyes.
“Well you’re hanging around with her.” I harshly groaned.
“It’s not like we’re fucking!” He repeated, this time with more anger.
“That doesn’t matter, Luke!” I nearly yelled. “Being unfaithful does not only qualify as fucking! It means that you’re seeing someone else!” On the edge of tears, I stared at my lap. “It hurts that you’d rather hang out with her than me.” I spat.
“It would be fine if I was with Kaylee or one of the girls!” He objected.
“Yeah!” I scoffed. “Because I trust them!” Luke pulled into a parking spot. “She wants you, Luke!” I yelled, “And she won’t stop until she gets you!” Madison and her clan began walking to his car. Taking a deep breath, I tried to contain my anger. “I refuse to be cheated on, Luke.” I told him. “We had sex. We’ve said we love each other, and that we need each other. But if you’re going to start seeing her, then you damn well better break up with me now, because I will not be cheated on.” With that, I climbed out of his car and slammed the door, ignoring his calls after me. I knew he’d just smile the Luke smile at Madison, and everything would be nonexistent.

“Okay… Honestly, what the fuck is going on?!?!” Kaylee asked, as Luke and I hadn’t spoke to each other all lunch, and sat at different ends of the table.
“Nothing.” Luke muttered, picking at his food. The table’s attention turned to me, as if I’d tell them that Luke maybe, possibly, probably, could be cheating on me. I shook my head, unintentionally glaring at Luke. He’d hardly looked up, and hardly touched his food.
“Nothing.” I spat. “I’m just crabby.” Luke scoffed.
“Why don’t you just tell them?” He challenged, pulling at his hair. “It;s not like you haven’t already.” His outburst shocked me.
“I haven’t told anyone.” I rolled my eyes.
“So why not tell them now?” He pushed, “They’ll find out sooner or later. Nows the best time.” I pursed my lips, sharing an angry glare with Luke.

“Luke’s fucking Madison.” As soon as the words left my mouth, Luke scoffed.
“No.” He corrected. “Romy’s mad because we’ve had a few conversations.” He lied.
“You two hung out all day on Sunday!” I exclaimed.
“Just because I’m not with you, doesn’t mean I’m with her.” He held a nonchalant tone, pissing me off further. “You’re lying.” He stated.
“That makes two of us.” Grabbing my lunch tray, I threw it out, and left the cafeteria. As I was walking out, I heard Luke grumble.
“She’s being ridiculous.” He spoke loud enough for me to hear.
“No, mate. It’s you.” Calum rejected, making me feel slightly less crazy.

"I'm sorry about earlier." Luke spoke, surprising me as I fumbled in my locker. "About lunch and the car fight." He clarified. "It was shitty of me." I heard his keys jingle in his hands as he leaned against the locker next to mine, staring at me. "Can I give you a ride home?" He asked as I slammed my locker shut, nodding but not speaking. "So you're mad then?" He cluelessly asked.
"You've been such an arse lately." We walked through the hallway, toward the exit.
"I know. And I'm sorry. I suck. I'm a dick." As we reached his car, I was surprised that Luke opened my door. "Don't be mad at me." He pleaded. "I'll make it up to you." I crossed my arms. "I've just been moody lately. And my grandma just got admitted to the hospital, mum and dad are fighting, Jack and Ben are trying to find somewhere else to stay. I'm failing AP Chemistry. Everything just feels like its falling apart and I'm so stressed. I honestly don't know why I'm talking to Madison. I swear I'll stop if it makes you happy." He ranted. "Please don't be mad, Romy. You're the only stable thing I have right now." I sighed, causing silence to strike us as Luke pulled out of his parking space and onto the road.

I couldn’t help but notice the fact that Luke had begun taking the long route home, as we were in the middle of a conversation, and he wasn’t done yet—he did not want me to leave angry.
“Can I take you out?” He asked. “We can go to the mall and have dinner.” I shook my head.
“No.” I rasped, picking at my sweater. “I just want to go home.” Luke sighed. “What?” I asked toward his upset gesture. Shaking his head, he pursed his lips.
"This won't work out if only one person is trying." He spoke as I scoffed.
"That's pretty ballsy of you to say." I remarked. "Seeing as I'm the only one trying." Luke shook his head.
"Not true. I'm trying." He almost seemed hurt.
"If you were trying, you wouldn't be fucking-” I was immediately cut off.
"We are not fucking!" Luke yelled. "For the last time, Romy! Jesus Christ can't you trust me enough to know I'd never do that to you?!?!" I regretted my actions when I looked over and saw how sad he was. "I fucking love you." He rasped. "Don't you get it? It's only you." I remained silent until we reached a stop light.

"I'm so sick of fighting about things that don't matter." He insisted. "We're young, Romy. We have so many other things to worry about than losing each other. I'm completely in love with you. Get it?" I nodded, but couldn't find the words to say. There was nothing else that could be exchanged.
"Do you want to go to the mall?" I asked him this time. With a quiet sigh and a fumbling raising of the radios volume, Luke nodded.

As I popped the bubble of gum in my mouth, Luke's hand played with mine. We'd been walking around the mall for about an hour, and had just finished eating, now being completely bored.
"What?" Luke asked as I stopped walking, looking around.
"Garbage." I mumbled, holding my gum between my teeth in order to show him what I wanted to get rid of. Without speaking, Luke reached over, grabbing the gum from my mouth, and popping it in his. "Ew!" I exclaimed, earning a laugh. Everything had somewhat calmed down since the fight in the car, and we were now being relatively friendly, as his hand slipped out of mine, vacationing around my waist instead.
"It's not like I haven't kissed you before." He chuckled.
"It's different!" I laughed. "That's gross!" Luke smiled at my teasing as he stopped us from waking, pulling me by my waist to press up against him.
"Speaking of kisses..." His voice trailed off. "I haven't gotten a kiss all day, and I believe I'm due." Playfully nudging him, I allowed Luke to pull me back, pressing his lips against mine. Smiling down at me, we resumed walking. I couldn't shake the feeling that we were pretending not to be angry or upset with each other, but I also longed fire a kiss, as he was right... We hadn't kissed all day.

Luke and I ventured to the small, indoor waterfall before heading out, as we wanted to sit and enjoy each others company for a bit longer. The mall was closing soon, so it was full of teenagers trying to get some last minute shopping in, parents dragging their small children home, and workers closing early. It was typical for a weekday. Luke and I couldn’t help but notice a group of three middle school boys that kept glancing at us. Luke read into it further than I, and got angry within a few minutes.
“They’re staring at you!” He growled, glaring at them.
“No they aren’t.” I dismissed, rolling my eyes and grabbing his hand. “Just ignore them.” He pulled his shoulder away as I tried to rest my head on it.
“Romy, they’re fucking staring at you!” His grip on my hand tightened as he got angrier. “I’m going to say something!” He insisted, standing up. I frowned as he subconsciously pulled me up as well.
“Luke, no.” I pleaded. “It’s fine. Let’s just go home.” He stared past me, as my back was now turned to them, pursing his lips.

“They are staring at your arse.” He stated. “You’re my girl, Rom. I don’t want them staring at you.” Leaning up, I kissed his cheek lightly, a sigh coming out immediately.
“Can you blame them? I’ve got a great arse.” I joked, Luke’s lips curved into a smile.
“Yeah, you do.” He agreed. “But they’re not allowed to look at it!” His focus was primarily on me as I bit my lip, trying to contain a smile. He’s being so ridiculous, but I love it.
“Let’s go home.” I prompted, leading him. The group of boys began walking toward us as we did so. As they passed us, one bumped into me. His hand purposely touching my bum as Luke and I were forced to let go. Luke’s reaction was immediate. He grabbed the collar of the boy’s sweater.
“What the fuck, bro?!” The boy protested. “It was an accident.” He lied.
“Bullshit!” Luke exclaimed, raising his hand back as if he was preparing to punch him.
“Luke!” I gasped. His head shot to me as I stared at him with shock. Without a word, Luke threw the boy to the ground, grabbing my hand tightly and pulling me away.

When we got back to the car and began driving, I turned to him.
“Luke!” I got his attention. “What the fuck was that?!?!” He didn’t answer, his knuckles turning pale as he gripped the steering wheel.
“They can’t just fucking touch you like that!” He yelled.
“Luke, they’re like thirteen!” I argued. “You could have got arrested if you hit them!” He scoffed.
“Well it’s a good thing I didn’t, then.” He sarcastically replied. I rolled my eyes. “Someone needs to teach those arse holes a lesson! They’re lucky it wasn’t me!”
“I can’t believe you’d let something so stupid get you angry.”I looked out the window, crossing my arms. Luke stayed silent for a long time.

“Romy.” He finally spoke as we pulled into my driveway. “Romy.” He spoke again, shutting the car off. “Look at me, baby.” I looked at him with a frown, grabbing my bag as I got ready to get out. “I’m sorry.” He shrugged. “But you’re mine. My girl. No one else’s. I love you, and if some arse is going to touch you, then I’m going to fuck them up. I don’t ever want-” I stopped him in mid-rant.
“Goodbye, Luke.” I told him, kissing his cheek before I climbed out of his car and left him in my driveway.
