The Love Countdown

twenty three;

DEDICATED TO CODY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRRRLLL x

I ended up going back to the hospital after last night. I couldn't stand being away from her, it was killing me.

"Mr. Styles?" The nurse quietly asks and I glance up to see her standing by the door with a girl next to her. She looked Libby's age; it was Maddy.

"She can come in," I mumble and the nurse leaves, letting Maddy walk through and sit on the chair beside me.

The air was thick with tension, I could tell Maddy wanted to say something, but she kept her mouth shut.

"Stop staring at me." I breathed and looked up at her, she was indeed staring at my face.

"So how's Liberty?" She asks and I frown my eyebrows. How do you fucking think she is?

"She's still breathing," I say instead. "Why do you care, anyway?"

She looked taken back. I didn't care if what I said hurt her. It's been almost a week and she hasn't seen Liberty in at least a month. She's her best friend. Aren't best friends supposed to look out for each other?

"What's that supposed to mean?" She replies, clearly offended.

"You haven't been to see her in weeks, she your best friend." My voice starts to rise and I can feel I'm on the verge of explosion.

"Oh, I'm sorry that her over protective boyfriend wouldn't let her out of his sight!" Maddy retaliates and I clench my fists. "If you didn't pull her into the spotlight like this so fast she's still be alive!"

"Get out!" I yell in her face and we both stand up. "Leave this hospital! I don't want you near her!"

"Why, Harry!? You're being over protective of her, just like I said!"

"Leave!" I screeched, on the verge of tears. My chest was rising and falling at a rapid pace and Maddy just stood there and stared at me in shock.

I wiped at my eyes as tears brimmed over, I couldn't handle it anymore. The girl I loved was either going to die or live with the painful memory of trying to die. Juggling a music career, a girlfriend and now this bitch of a "best friend" was taking it's toll on me, is this how Liberty felt? Stressed?

"I'm sorry," She finally spoke and I raised my hand to silence her. I sniffed loudly and that was it. Tears finally fell freely from my eyes and onto my shirt, I didn't care if Maddy was standing right in front of me, I was upset and depressed and I needed to let it out.

"Harry," She cooed and wrapped her arms around my shoulders in a hug. It wasn't like Liberty's or any of the boys', but I needed a shoulder to cry on for that minute.

"Her parents landed at Heathrow today," she said into my shoulder and i let go of her arms.
"par-what?" I choked and coughed out loud.

"They want to see her,Harry. They are her parents after all."

"But they were the ones that left her here!" I cried and Maddy placed a hand on my back.

"I know, but they are her parents. They deserve to know that their daughters dating a poster." She chuckled and mustered up a weak smile.

"I guess," I sighed. "What if they don't like me?"

"Trust me, Harry. If Liberty likes you, they're going to love you." She gave me a reassuring smile and I nodded my head.

"Look, I know we didn't really get off to a good start. But I just wanted to see her, and bring her some flowers." She said. "I have to go, because Elliot will be waiting." She gave me one last hug and went to the door.

"Oh, and Harry?" I turned around. "If you love her, tell her." And that was the last thing she said before leaving. I turned back around to face Liberty, and sat down in the chair again.

I pulled out my phone and texted Louis, telling him that i needed someone here when Liberty's parents came to see her. I couldn't deal with the Mother and Father of the girl I loved staring down at me and blaming for this entire situation.

I locked my phone and decided to go for a walk around the building. I hadn't really been able to look around for the past few days. I needed to clear my head.

I got up out of my seat and glanced at Libby before I shut the door of her room and left. It was busy in the hospital today, nurses and doctors bustling about while patients were sitting beside the windows, just staring out into the city.

Before I went outside, I decided to make a coffee from the coffee machine. I pressed the double caffeine button because I was going to need it if Liberty's parents were going to arrive, because it was going to be long night.

I cool air clung to my skin ask I stepped outside of the hospital doors. I probably should have taken a jacket but at the moment I didn't really care.

I took a seat on one of the park benches near the lake at the back of the hospital. It was quiet and peaceful, unlike the hospital which was quiet, but it wasn't peaceful. It was more like the silence was eating me alive, but with the outside and the birds chirping i felt calmer.

I sipped from the coffee cup and stared out at the lake. It was frozen over, just like everything else at the time of the year.

I hadn't even realized that Christmas was only a few days away, I should have noticed by the Christmas trees and decorations hung up around the hospital, I would have to text Louis again to see if he could bring some decorations to put up in her room. She always liked colour.

After ten or fifteen minutes I thought it was best to go back inside. I stood up from my seat and threw the empty coffee cup in the bin, making my way back inside.

brace yourselves.

*******

When I got back inside, I felt clean. The cool, crisp air must have made a difference to my mind, well, that's what I hope.

I took my time in making my way back to Libby's room. Smiling and greeting the patients and nurses as they walked by, some even asking for pictures. I happily obliged, because I felt happier. Even though I looked like shit.

I finally got back to Liberty's room and sighed. Back in my comfortable place. I twisted the knob of her door and slowly walked in.

What I saw when I walked in was a shock. My eyes widened and my heart rate sped up. The fluttering of her eyelashes and the short gasps from her mouth were all I needed to fling myself out of the door and sprint down the hall, all the way to the front desk.

"She's awake! Liberty's awake!"
