THE DEATH OF ME

Today is my first day back at school, after spending two whole days moving from hospital to home and back again, I’ve decided enough is enough and it is time to claim my life back.
Harry packed me food and was now waiting down stairs for me, calling my name every moment to hurry me up.
I am still slightly weak and taking my pain pills, not able to rush since the pain is still very much there.
I stride slowly down the stairs, and when Harry notices me he leaps over and takes my bag from my hand, making it easier for me.
“You’ll be late,” He states as if I don’t know it already.
“I’ll be fine,” I sigh, reaching the last step.
“You know, you don’t have to go back just yet,” Harry says softly.
“I know.. I just..”
“Harry’s right you know.. You can stay home a few days longer,” Sam speaks up from the counter where he was reading the paper with his morning coffee.
“I’ll be alright,” I assure them.
Harry shrugs and holds the door open, while reaching to link our fingers together.
“I’ll pick you up and take you over to Nan then,” Sam yells out after us.
“Sure fine,” I tell him, shutting the door after me.
“Why did you just agree to that? I’ll pick you up from school,” Harry frown at me, anger in his eyes.
“No.. You’re meeting Zayn down at the tracks,” I point out.
“So? I’ll take a break to fetch you,” He snaps.
“First I’m not some dog you need to fetch Harry, and second that is stupid- to drive across town just to drive me to Nan.”
“So El or Perrie would pick you up, you don’t need Sam,” He pouts.
“It’s just a ride Harry, I’ll see you once you finish,” I stretch to kiss his cheek, and wince with pain.
After sitting in the car, I pop another pill into my mouth and swallow.
“Are those helping? I keep seeing you take them,” Harry states as he starts the car.
“Yes, it’s fine don’t worry, I roll my eyes.
“I do worry- you sure you want to go to school? You can come to the tracks instead,” Harry offers me that half smile of his which he knows I go weak at the knees for.
“I’m sure, now stop being a bad influence,” I shove his arm playfully.
When we arrive at school Harry gets out with me, my bag on his shoulder and my hand in his.
“What do you think you are doing Harry?” I ask raising a brow.
“Walking you to class,” He winks.
Class has already started and so the hallways are empty.
“Listen Cassie, I need to tell you something,” He comes to a stop before the classroom door.
“What is it?” I furrow my brows.
“You’ve been in the paper again.. they wrote about the accident and so.. I’m giving you a heads up that people know,” He whispers.
“Shit,” I mutter.
“No- no look at me Cass- We don’t care- don’t let them get into your head- we don’t care what they write or what they say- they can all just fuck off- got it babe?” He fixes his gaze on me waiting for my nod of approval.
“Very well.. don’t care,” I repeat after him, fear taking over every ounce of my body.
“Yes, don’t care,” He mumbles and opens the class door.

Everyone turns to look at us.
Liam who is sat in the front looks up too, and when he looks at Harry, Harry beckons him to come over.
Liam pushes his chair back and stride over swiftly.
“She does not carry this, you don’t let her out of your sight- if something- anything happens you call me right away,” Harry orders him.
“Sure thing sir,” Liam stutters.
“Harry! Liam you don’t need-“ I start to whisper back.
“Nice to see you all well Cassie, why don’t you join us,” The teacher speaks up.
I turn around to face him, and find the hall classroom watching us. I nod and glance over to Harry. Harry assures me with a nod and Liam puts a hand on my shoulder guiding me softly to my seat. When I reach my chair I notice Harry is still standing by the door.
“Will this be all Mr. Styles?” Mr. Fixen questions.
“Err, yeah, sure, have a lovely days guys,” He flashes a smile and a wave of his hand before closing the door, making the girls in my class moan out loud and my heart rate quicken.
“Welcome back Cassie, hope you’re better,” The teacher smiles.
“I am thanks,” I offer a small smile which I don’t think quite reaches my eyes.
I am tense and nervous being back here, since my last time at a school function was the dance which didn’t end so well.
“Very well, I’m sure Mr. Payne here will help you with anything you have not yet managed to catch up to,” and with that he goes back to teaching.

Even though Mr. Fixen was talking, I could hear the whispers. I still had a mark on my forehead and a bruise on my cheekbone since I am slow healer, I look much better than the last time Liam saw me. Though it didn’t stop my classmates from whispering about my marks and bruises. Mr. Fixen had to ask them a few times to quiet down, sending me an apologetic glance.
When the bell finally rang and Mr. Fixen dismissed the class, the students were slow with getting up and leaving trying to get in another look and stare.
“She was in a car accident so why don’t you just get on with it and get out!” Liam snaps at two girls lingering on my right.
“Thanks,” I whisper to him, fiddling with my books while keeping my head down.
“No problem,” He shrugs.
“I’m trying to figure out what is more exciting for them- me being back after the accident or checking to see if the lies in the paper are true,” I sigh, once we are the last to leave the classroom.
“Bunch of cunts that’s what they are,” Liam grumbles, leading the way to the cafeteria.
“Liam! I have never heard you swear like this before! If I had known any better I would have thought you’re spending your days with Harry,” I say appalled.
“Sorry, but it wasn’t easy being your best friend these last couple of weeks, since the only gossip around was first the party, then the crash, then Harry, Ben and the car, and now you being back and Harry Styles walking you to class,” Liam counts on his fingers. I don’t have time to answer that since we join Calum and Danielle at their table.
“I reckon this is the most I was ever stared at in my life,” Danielle states looking around the room.
“Don’t lie, you love it,” Calum smirks. “How are you love, still sore?” He questions as he eyes the pill I pop in my mouth.
“Somewhat, so what have I missed?” I lean my chin in my hand.
“You know the usual.. Some girl brought her boyfriend to this school dance and he got in a fight with another girl’s date,” Danielle shrugs.
“Yeah and then that same girl got into a quite gruesome car crash which got her and her boyfriend back in the headlines,” Calum adds.
“Yeah it was all over the paper- literally,” Liam nods.
“NO! Really! No one told about that,” I’m gobsmacked.
“Shit, sorry, was that over sharing then?” Calum glances over to Liam.
“No! I was supposed to know about this! I was supposed to be told,” I pout, upset it was kept from me.
“My mum kept all the papers so if you’re up to reading them…” Danielle offers.

My phone rings and I fish it out my bag, as Calum goes on about the last few days. It's Harry.
"Miss me already?"
"Checking up on you.. is everything alright? Have you had enough for today? I can come pick you up," He rumbles.
"No, I'm alright," I smile.
"You can't leave! you just got here," Calum calls out.
"Who's that?" Harry inquires.
"Calum," I reply.
"And why is he listening in on our conversation?"
"Well, I am sat with him at lunch," I answer, amused.
"Since when? I thought you eat with Liam," Harry remarks.
"Gosh Harry- is that what I think it is? You're adorable," I smile into the phone.
"No, I'm just asking," He hurries to say.
"You are! You're jealous, how sweet," I beam.
"Call me if you had enough and want me to come fetch you, bye."
The call goes dead and I can't help the stupid wide smile on my face. When he wants, Harry can be the sweetest thing ever.
"So what was in the paper?" I go back to our previous conversation.
"No wait! I need to cherish this moment! Harry fucking Styles jealous of me," Calum holds up his hands with closed eyes and a stupid grin on his face.
"It actually said Harry was driving, and that you two broke up since he killed your Nan," Danielle talks over Calum.
"Danielle!" Liam looks appalled by the blunt way she said it.
"That is dreadful! Nan was driving- and she is still very much alive!" I state.
"And Harry wasn't even with them," Liam adds.
"Yes, Harry came out with a statement soon after, he was pissed by these lies, it was all over the news and the following day's paper," Calum explained.
"I can't believe it- where do people come up with such terrible lies to tell?"
"Yeah, at first it was so bad, I mean the Monday right after some people in school were saying you died," Danielle adds.
"What?" I am once again gobsmacked about the gossip going around and the dreadful lies that go with it.
"God don't remind me, I was stopped all day by people who asked when your funeral is," Liam shakes his head.
"Yeah he got detention for losing it in class!" Danielle giggled.
"What do you mean?" I turn to look at him.
"I just couldn't take it anymore so I got up in the middle of class and started shouting at this stupid girl ho was crying in the end saying she'll miss you.. I mean- let's say you did die- she didn't even know you! I mean knows... So I told her she needs to get over herself, since you two never exchanged a half of a word, and that you're alive," Liam says simply.
"Goodness," I stifle a giggle, this is just too bizarre.
"Yes well, Mrs. Gold wasn't too happy with me," He shrugs.
My phone rings again, but this time it is Sam. I think about just letting it go to voice mail, but my friends are staring at me waiting for me to answer.
"Cassie? Listen.. I need you to collect you thing right away, and meet me at the school entrance."
