THE DEATH OF ME

Flash in the dark

It is Sunday morning and I am rushing to work. I was so sick the day before, vowing now not to ever drink again. Nan hasn’t said a word about Friday and I was thankful. I am not sure how I got home that day, but I have a feeling Harry has a hand in it. At first I didn’t remember much, but as the day passed things started coming back to me. The dance, Ben and the fight. I remembered Harry showing up, and I wonder who it was that called him.
He has sent me a few texts but I haven’t replied to any, too embarrassed to face him. I have said some hurtful things, which I still am working out how much I meant them.

“You’re late,” Louis states when I finally walk through the shack’s doors.
“I know,” I mumble. I'm dripping wet from the rain outside, and take a seat at the bar just as he pulls away the paper and tucks it under the counter.
“Anything worth reading?” I question, shrugging off my coat.
“No,” He shakes his head.
“You think today will be a quiet day?” I ask just in the sake of making conversation.
“Yeah.. If you want to head out early to make it to Harry’s drift you can,” Louis smiles.
“Maybe.. I’ll see.”
I haven’t spoken to Harry yet, and I wasn’t sure I was ready to and to make things worse, today was Harry's drifting race against Ben, and I know for a fact that it will be full of people wanting to see the two rivals head in head.

The Shack was still empty by late morning, which gave me the opportunity for a slow shift, shuffling around as I wiped the tables and the glasses.
When I am done I seat down at the bar, and pull the news paper over to have a look.
I gasp when I see the headlines.
A big photo of Harry holding Down Ben at the school dance is on the front page, with a smaller photo of Harry and I- the one that was taken when we came in.

'School drama doesn't only happen in movies, as the two biggest rival racers of our time meet face to face at Watford high's school dance. the on lookers said Harry had a fit when his girl wanted to dance with Ben, throwing punches and knocking him to the ground. apparently Cassie had enough of Harry's behavior and she stormed out crying refusing to speak to him.
As you remember, Ben has lost to Harry just last week putting him way behind on the charts-'

"Shit, I didn't want you to see that," Louis says when he notices me with the paper.
"It's fine.. I am not surprised by this bunch of rubbish," I sigh letting go of the pages.
"Good.. and you never know.. maybe it will bring the Shack some more costumers," Louis winks at me.
"What does that have to do with the shack?" I furrow my brows at him.
"So you haven't seen it," Louis seems alarmed.
I reopen the paper, looking for something about the shack. In the last page there was a small photo of me looking intoxicated and out of it in the middle of the shack's dance floor.
"Oh no," I choke.

'It has come to our notice that Cassie Price The famous Harry styles' girlfriend isn't that young and Innocent as they would like us to think. We have found out she has been working at the shack- an Irish pub on the outskirts of town. The bar belongs to one of Harry's mates Louis Tomlinson which is known for his party boy days.
Louis hired Cassie after she was fired from her previous job on behalf of Harry, it seems Cassie isn't that different than Harry's Lola after all.'

"This is bullshit!" I exclaim, holding in my angry tears.
"I know Cass, listen it will wear off I promise you, they will move on to someone else soon enough, you just need to keep patient," Louis tries to make me feel better.
"Did Harry see this?" I question, but Louis didn't know.
My phone rings but I ignore it. I am in so much trouble, once the school finds out I work here and see's the bad publicity the dance got- gosh this is bad.

"Cassie!"
Louis and I turn to see who it is.
Nan is standing at the door, her coat dripping from the rain outside.
"Nan," I stand up swiftly.
"I couldn't believe it! Tell me it is not true! I read the paper! I went to the coffee shop but you weren't there," Her face fell and the look of disappointment took over.
"Nan I can explain! It's all rubbish!" I stride over to her.
"Are you not working here then?" She questions, her chin held high.
"I am, but-"
"It is enough, I don't need any more explanations- you are coming with me right now young lady," She demands.
"I can't just leave!" I stutter, turning to Louis for help.
"Sorry mum, I don't think we officially met, I'm Louis.. Eleanor's boyfriend and Cassie's boss," He reaches a hand to shake Nan's.
I was sure she would ignore it, but to my surprise she takes hold of his hand while studying his face.
"I adore Eleanor, she is a wonderful girl, but I am not in favour of you letting my under age granddaughter work in a pub,” Nan tells him. I swear I saw Louis shrink under her gaze and words. She didn’t have to yell, talking in a low voice and a steady stare is enough for her to do her magic.
“You might be right, though she needed the job, and she is nearly 18.. I don’t see any harm in it,” Louis tries to seem brave in front of Nan but it wasn’t quite working for him.
“Of course you don’t, you’re used to partying.. I wonder what El found in you,” Nan says coldly.
“Nan! That is just rude,” I am shocked and embarrassed. I send an apologetic glance to Louis as I exited the shack after Nan. She must calm down and see reason.

“Cassie get in the car,” Her mind was made up, but I had to try and change it.
“Nan please listen to me!” I beg, running around the car to her, as she got into the driver’s seat.
“Cassandra! I won’t ask you again! Get in the car right this instant or help me god I will ground you!” Nan spat in anger.
I sigh in defeat and pace back around to the passenger side, sliding in.
My hair was damp from the rain, but that was the least of my worries. Nan was never this cross with me which made it hard to know how to calm her down.
She starts the car and backs out of the park.
“Nan..” I say softly.
“I don’t want to hear it Cassie! I didn’t bring you up this way! Coming home drunk?! Working in a bar- when you’re not even 18?! If only your mum knew what has become of you,” She remarks in an angry voice.

I couldn’t help the tears gliding down my face. I can’t bare Nan being so upset with me, so appalled with my actions I was beside myself, and all of this because a stupid paper who wrote lies.
“I know.. It was a mistake- but Nan you have to believe me- half of what you read there is just lies!” I exclaim, not able to keep myself from getting all worked up.
“Did you not come home drunk Friday night? Thank god Harry was there to bring you home and tuck you into bed.”
“Maybe he is the reason I drank in the first place?” I blurt before I have a chance to stop myself.
“What was that?” Nan’s eyes grow as she looks over at me.
“Nothing, you’re right.. Someone called him to come and get me, but I didn’t have a choice about working at the Shack Nan- Daniel from the coffee shop is a real git and he was bullying Perrie and me, so that was the only job I could find.”
I know that is a lie, but I couldn’t tell her the truth, she already thinks the worst about Louis, I can’t have her hating Harry as well. Harry! The drifting! He has left me a message begging me to show up and I completely ignored him.
“Nan! Please!” I start.
“Cassie!” She raises her voice and turns her head at me, “I just don’t want to hear any-“
“Nan!” I cut in screaming.
I wasn’t sure myself what just happened. The only thing I saw was a car coming straight at us, the driver shocked into fear by losing control of his car in this heavy rain. There was a crash and then everything went dark.

They were getting ready to line up for the drift, though Harry’s head wasn’t in it. His phone was in his hand, trying Cassie once again. He knew she was pissed off at him, but it still wasn’t like her to ignore him for such a long amount of time. Did he screw things that bad for her to be like this?
“Harry, she might be out front, put that phone away and come out,” Zayn asked of him.
Harry let out a sigh and tucked his phone away, taking hold of his helmet and striding out to his car.
This is it. This was the race the big bet was on. Harry knew he will win, He had a better car and he truly wanted to make sure Ben stays away from Cassie, even if she decides she wants nothing to do with him, at least he knows she’ll have nothing to do with Ben.

Harry swipes the small crowd with his gaze. No Cassie. He could kick himself for giving her so much space. He should have never listened to Eleanor. He should have knocked on her door Saturday morning and talked to her, straighten everything out.
He noticed Zayn go stand next to Perrie and Ed. He nodded to them and started slipping his helmet on.

“Harry!” He heard a shout and spun to look for the voice.
“Miss- you can’t pass the race is about to start,” Some guard stopped Eleanor from running over.
“I don’t give a fuck!” Eleanor shoves him and rushes over.
“Harry!” She calls him again. Her voice is full of despair, and Harry got this bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.
“El? What’s wrong?” Harry frowned at her.
“You need to come with me- right now!” She begs of him, finally in arms reach she takes hold of his hand and pulls him after her.
“What is it El?” Harry notices Eleanor’s red rim eyes just then, and fear takes hold of him for what she is about to say.
“It’s Cassie!”
