THE DEATH OF ME

Lamp Post

I am running late the next day, since Perrie, Eleanor and I got home late last night.
I rushed to school with my ear buds in and music on high, listening to coldplay.
I make it to class right with the teacher, and take a seat turning off my music.

I smile at Liam, but he doesn’t return the smile which is odd but I don’t have time to give it a second thought since the teacher asks for quiet, and I can’t afford to get another detention, needing to rush after school to make it to work.

Someone passes a notebook to me, and I am staring at it confused, not sure why it was passed over. I notice a piece of paper peaking out of it, so I open the cover and my eyes instantly go wide.

It was the front of the sports page, which I never read, but most of the boys in school do.
There is a huge photo of Harry holding up a trophy in one hand while hugging a girl while his lips cover hers- the girl is me! Who took this photo? Who put it on the front page?!? I close the notebook swiftly and look around, noting the stares. Also Liam was eyeing me. I feel my cheeks getting hot, and the burn in my eyes. No. I will not let them see me cry! I get up and collect my things, then run outside with the notebook in my hand. I need to spray my face with some cold water and calm down.

“Cassie!”
I turn to see Liam rushing after me.

“I can’t deal with your scolding right now Liam, I just can’t,” I take a deep breath, but when I exhale it is shaky, and I bit my bottom lip to keep it from wobbling.

“What? I wasn’t going to scold you, I came to make sure you’re alright,” He tilts his head to glance into my eyes.

“This is so bad- when did you see this? Why didn’t you give me a heads up?” I am frantic, but the only thing I can think of is police knocking on Harry’s door to arrest him for being with a miner.

“I couldn’t, I waited for you at the gates but you never showed so I thought you might know already and aren’t coming to school,” He explains.

“What am I going to do?” I look up at him, feeling the hotness behind my eyes, but I will not cry! I refuse.

“First Cassie, you really need to breathe, no one knows this is you- well except the people who know about you and Harry, but even the person who wrote the article- he doesn’t know who you are- they only wrote- Harry celebrated with a mystery girl,” Liam takes the notebook out of my hand and pulls out the paper.

He shows me the headline. He is right, no one knows who I am.

“What happens if someone talks? What happens if someone finds out?” I am miserable.

“No one will, and you know what? So what? You are almost 18, and Harry loves you and you love him- who cares about what people think?” He shrugs, and offers me a light smile.

“I don’t care what people think, I care about Harry getting in trouble,” I correct him.

“He’s a big boy, he knows to take care of himself,”

“I don’t want to go back into class,” I glance back towards the classroom door.

“You don’t need to go in, I told the teacher you’re feeling under the weather and I am going to make sure you have a way to get back home,” Liam flashes a cheeky smile.

“Gosh Liam, what would I do without you?”
Liam walks me to the school gates, and I thank him again.

It is drizzling but I don’t really care. I pull Harry’s beanie which I kept out of my pocket and pull it over my head. I make it a few steps when I notice him. He is stood leaning on his motorbike, two helmets on the seat. His hair wet from the rain, the curls dripping, and his leather jacket is open, letting his white Tshirt underneath get wet too. He looks so serious and handsome with that look of sorrow on his face that I can’t help but smile. I stop next to a lamp post that is right next to him and hug it, peeking from the side at him.

“Didn’t think I’ll find you smiling,” He speaks first, and I let out a slight laugh.

“I wasn’t a moment ago.. I was on the verge of crying actually, but then I saw you,” I lean my head on the side of the pole watching him. Harry pushes off his bike and strides over, leaning his arms on the pole above of my head, looking down at me.

“So you’ve seen the paper,” He states.

“I have.. It was passed to me in class,” I sigh.

“Jealous fuckers,” Harry curses.

“In how much trouble are we?” I question.

“It depends,” He is trying not to smile, but I can see his dimples.

“On?”

“On how much you care.. I mean, do we give a fuck what people are saying? I don’t,” He leans in closer to me.

“So let’s not care together,” I whisper to him.

Harry smiles, leaning down even more, as I tilt my head up to meet him. Harry touches his lips to mine in a soft kiss, a drop of rain falls on my temple, making me look up at the sky.

“Come on, let’s get out of here,” Harry tugs on my hand.

“Let’s,” I agree, glancing back at the pole.

“What are you looking at?” Harry looks back too.

“You’ll might think I’m made, but for some reason this lamp post will forever remind me of you,” I peek up at him. Harry smiles and goes back to the pole, taking something out of his back pocket. It’s a little knife. I move closer to see what he was up to. He is carving into the pole. When he moves back to show me his art work I can’t help but beam up at him. It is a little cliché really but I love it none the less. It was a heart with our initials in it- H&C.

“Me too,” Harry agrees then, taking the beanie off my head and placing the helmet on instead.

I get on the back of the bike, feeling its familiar texture underneath me. It has been a while since I’ve been on the back of this.

“Ready?” Harry touches my fingers that close around his torso.

“Yes,” I giggle, and he drives off. I don’t know where we are going, but I don’t care. Harry made me feel so much better, and as long as I am with him, I won’t be touched by others.

Harry drives us to the shack, which is empty apart from Louis, Zayn, Niall and Ed.

“Don’t you have school?” Louis asks when they notice me.

“School is over rated,” Harry puts down are helmets on one of the tables, then pulls two chairs up to the table they are seated at.

“So Cassie, how’s it feel?” Niall smiles at me.

“What feels?” I am having trouble following his train of thought.

“How does it feel to be a celebrity,” He chuckles, making Louis laugh too.

“Oi man, that is a little too soon,” Ed swats at Niall’s arm.

“I’m more of the school loser type then a celebrity,” I sigh, placing my hands on my lap.

“You? How so?” Louis passes me his beer bottle, however, Harry pulls it away and hands it back to him.

“First of, other than only they know about me being that girl in the photo, and let’s just put it this way.. They aren’t too happy,” I reply.

“Shitty bastereds,” Zayn says under his breath. I glance over to him, touched by him showing me some compassion.

“Cassie love, it’s only because the girls are jealous you got Harry, and the boys are jealous they don’t have you,” Ed explains.

“The first part is true,” Harry smirks.

“Hey,” I smack his hand.

“The second part is the boys being too scared to come any close because if they will, I’ll snap their necks,” Harry clarifies.

“Oh, when you put it that way,” Louis rolls his eyes, getting up and heading to the bar.
Harry rests his arm on my shoulders, pulling me closer, as Louis comes back with a cola bottle in his hand for me.

“I heard you got a dress for the dance,” Louis changes the subject.

“Yes I have,” I smile.

“You’re all set then? Dress, shoes and all?” Zayn inquires.

“Well, I haven’t got shoes yet,” I remember.

“Why not?” Harry asks.

“Well, we just got the dress, and then we bumped into Ben who was being his usually annoying self and-“

“Wait, back up- Ben? You saw Ben and this is the first time you mention it?” Harry leans away from me, a hard look in his eyes to match his frown.

“I forgot,” Is the best answer I can come up with.

“How would you forget such a thing Cassandra?!” He raises his voice.

“Don’t yell at me! He came into the store we were at. Can you calm down?”

“The hell I will! What did I tell you about telling me about things like this?” Harry gets up to his feet, his chair falling back.

“Fuck Harry, just relax, it’s not like Eleanor told me about it,” Louis tries to get Harry to chill.

“Yeah, Perrie hasn’t mentioned it either,” Zayn speaks up.

“I don’t give a shit what they told you- I only care about what Cassie tells me!” Harry shouts.

“I want to know what he said to you!” Harry demands.

“I’m not telling you a thing! You don’t get to order me about!” I fold my arms challenging him with my stare.

“The fuck with you,” Harry storms out of the shack, the door slamming after him.

“You could have just told him and gotten this over with,” Louis whispers.

“Maybe that is what you’re used to doing with Harry, but I refuse to be ordered around by his stupid demands! I am not his poppet which he can tell me what to do and expect it to be done,” I hiss at Louis, anger taking over, the calmness and ease I had going on before was long gone.

“Where do you think he went to?” Niall questions.

“Probably to find Ben,” Ed replies.

“He probably will go find Eleanor to get some answers first,” Louis says.

“Yeah, you’re probably right,” Zayn agrees with him.

“Fantastic,” I mutter. I notice Harry hasn’t taken a helmet with him, both left on the table.
The rain outside got stronger, and some of my anger towards Harry is replaced with worry.
Ed’s eyes follow mine and he notices the helmets too.

“He’s a race driver Cass, he’ll be fine,” Ed assures me softly.

“I know, but it’s not him I don’t trust.. It’s the other people on the road,” I sigh.

“Come on poppet, let me take you home,” Louis gets up.

“But my shift start in a few hours,” I remind him.

“It’s a slow day, I can manage, unless you want to work?”
I shake my head and follow Louis out of the shack waving goodbye to the rest of the boys.

“He’ll cool off eventually,” He tries to comfort me.

“He shouldn’t get this worked up over stupid things like this in the first place,” I snap, though I do appreciate his loyalty to Harry.

“You don’t know about Ben and Harry do you?” Louis closes the door after himself and starts up the car.

“They are rivals, big deal, no point going mad over it,” I shrug.

“No.. they aren’t only rivals, there is really bad blood between those two, so I advise you to take it easy with Harry when it comes to Ben,”
"What happened between them?” I question.

“That you need to ask Harry,”
