THE DEATH OF ME

Back

Eleanor stops the car in front of my house, just as the door opens.

I am confused and slightly alarmed, but then Darcy steps out, followed by Nan, and I can't contain the smile on my face. I hurry out of the car to meet them, rewording Nan with a big hug and kiss, feeling bad I haven't really stayed in touch these past few days.

"I didn't know you got back," I say, turning to Darcy to say hello.

"That is because you don't answer your phone dear," My Nan taunts me. "Are those your friends?" She peeks behind me, at Eleanor and Perrie who got out of the car.

"Oh yes, sorry, Nan this is Eleanor and Perrie, we just got back from a zumba class we signed up to," I explain, "This is my Nan and my neighbor Darcy," I introduced them.
"My Nan just got back from visiting her sister," I explain to the girls.

"I have never met any of Cassie's friends! Come in for some tea," Nan offered.

"How is Max?" I remember to ask Darcy.

"He is well, thank you, I was just telling Nan about your help, thanks again," Darcy smiled.

"It was no problem really," I assure her.

Darcy leaves and I follow Nan and my friends into the house.
"I wish I knew you were coming out! I would have made sure there was more food in the fridge and cleaned around," I sit down at the counter.

"Nonsense love, I'm happy you went out with your lovely friends here, pretty things aren't you," Nan smiles at them.

"At least let me make the tea," I push up and walk over to the kettle.
"Though Cass darling, what have you eaten these past days?" Nan looked confused. You can tell no one was living here these past few days.

"Well.. I was… I ate at work and um.."

Before I got a chance to come up with a lie about not staying at home, Eleanor cuts in.

"She was staying by me a few nights, since she didn't want to stay alone," She smiles a bright smile at Nan.

"Oh, that is so wonderful of you to have Cassie by you," Nan beams.

There is a loud knock on the door just then, and by the looks Perrie and Eleanor gave me, we all had a good idea who that is.

"More visitors?" Nan gets up.

"I'll get it, sit down Nan, relax," I assure her as I rush to the banging door.

"Why the fuck do I need to look for you? Where is your fucking phone?" Harry shouts.

"My Nan is in the kitchen with Eleanor and Perrie so watch your mouth," I whisper.

"She's back? Did you know? Why didn't you tell me?" Harry whispers harshly

"I didn't know! I just found out, since I didn't check my phone today yet," I explain.

"Well, call me later- don't forget," Harry says angrily.

"Who's there? Well hello!" Nan peeks from behind me.

I glance alarmed at Harry. The frown on his face is gone, instead was placed one of his most breath taking dimply smiles.

"You must be Cassie's Nan! Welcome back," Harry grins, offering her his hand.

Nan blushes as she does, and Harry brings her hand to his mouth and places a kiss on top.
"And who might you be?" She beams up at him.

"Oh, didn't Cass tell you? We are dating, I just came by to remind her that we have plans for tonight," Harry winks at me.

"No she hasn't told me! My, my! How lovely, though I'm sorry, I didn't get your name," She says.

"Harry," He smiles wider.

"Are you sure you don't want to join the girls inside?" Nan asks.

"You know? Don't mind if I do," Harry steps inside, linking his arm with Nan's, leaving me behind with my mouth wide open.

What the hell is going on?!

I close the door they left open, and shuffle behind them into the kitchen.

"Harry! Fancy seeing you here! I was just telling Mrs. Price about Cassie staying over at mine when she was at her sister's," Eleanor says carefully.

I know what she is doing, she is letting him know about the lie we told, so he won't mess it up.

"Oh no love, I'm not Price, I am Cassie's mum's mother.. My family name is Gibes, but you can call me Nan like everyone else," Nan laughs.

"So Nan, how was it by Linda?" I change the subject.

"She is depressed, because she is getting old.. So every little thing she thinks she's dying," Nan rolls her eyes making my friends laugh.
I place cups with tea in front of everyone and a plate of cookies Nan brought back with her.

"So what did you tell her?" Perrie questioned, amused by Nan.

"Why I told her that I am 5 years older and she doesn't see me thinking I'm dying from every little sneeze," Nan chuckles.

"How young is your sister?" Harry asks.

"67," Nan smirks.

"You look much younger then that! Are you sure you're not messing with us?" He winks at her, making Nan melt.

I have no clue who this man is and what he has done with the Harry I came to know, but I like him.

An hour later my friends leave, and Harry promises to be back at 19:00 to pick me up for our date.

After I walk them out and wave goodbye to the back of their cars I step back inside.
"Nan, you must be tired, can I make you anything?" I question, feeling naughty for not calling her these past few days.

"No, come sit and talk to me, how are you?"
I sit down next to her and sigh.

"All right," I smile.

"You seem more then alright love, you seem.. Happy," Nan takes my hand in hers.

"What makes you say that?" I crinkle my forehead.

"Cassie dear.. I left at home a quiet girl, who shied away from people, rather spend time on her own, and come back to a girl who spends time with new friends, dating a new boy, and most important- smiles much more," Nan states.

"You're right, I'm the happiest I have ever been," I grin, knowing this is all Harry's doing.

"How did you meet Harry?" Nan asks then.

"He knocked me down on the street when he was.. Hurrying off to meet some friends, and we just got talking and it… just happened," I throw my hands up in explanation.

"He is a handsome fella," Nan gives me a knowing glare.

"He is isn't he," I agree without thinking.

"He seems older then you.. isn't he?" She goes on.

"Not that much older," I'm not sure how Nan might take the age difference so I am careful with how much I tell her.

"It's good he is older, I tell you.. in my time all girls dated older men, so they could be taken care of! Oh and I just love those girls, how lovely they both are," Nan jumps, making me giggle.

"How I missed that sound," She folds me in a warm hug and I let it linger, missing her, her sweet smell, and her warmth.

"Do you know where you're going out tonight?" Nan lets me go finally, and I straighten.

"No, he didn't say, I better ask him," I stand.

"Yes, so you should know what to wear, I think I might go food shopping, make sure there are things to eat," Nan puts together a mental shopping list.

"Nan, if you'll go tomorrow, I'll join you," I offer, knowing she would like that, an opportunity to spend some time together.

"That sounds like a plan," She agrees.

I leave to take a shower and start getting ready.
I decide to text Harry to find out where we'll be going.

To Harry: SO where are we going tonight?

From Harry: I'm not telling

To Harry: Well.. What should I wear?

From Harry: Something warm and comfortable.

I put my phone down and hurry to the shower, hoping I'll have enough time to relax before Harry shows.

I fill up the bath, making sure it is hot and full of bubbles before stepping in.
I lay my head on the cool ceramic and close my eyes.

I can't believe I had Eleanor, Perrie and Harry over with Nan. I had never before had friends over, not even Liam.

I liked them being here, it was new and quite fun. I also saw a new side of Harry, a side I have never seen before, and I remember how fast he hopped from being cross with me to all smiles and jokes.

I wonder what kind of mood he will be in tonight, and hop he forgot all about his anger with me.
I get out of the bath a half an hour later, drying my hair with a towel and picking out clothes.
I decided on the black jeans I got with Eleanor and a white jumper I had, with my trusty Dr. Martens.

I brush at my hair in front of the mirror and my eyes catch on the makeup we purchased that I never yet used.
What the hell right?

I sit in front of the mirror and open the mascara. I swipe the wand over my lashes twice. I then brush on a little blush, but just a tiny bit and call it a day. There, I put some effort in, Harry should be proud.

I take a jacket out of my closet, knowing that if Harry shows up with his motorbike I will be cold, and stride down the hall to the stairs. When I reach the bottom, the door bell rings, and with the sound my heart pumps faster.

I pad to the door, and with a deep breath open it, to find a dashing Harry dresses in his trademark black and holding a red rose in his hand.
