THE DEATH OF ME

A Beanie

When Harry stops the bike in front of school the next day, it is 15 minutes before class starts, and a lot of students are still outside.

I am a little worried about what awaits for me behind the school gates today, after the way I have left yesterday. Liam already texted me, that people have been asking him about Harry's house, where it is and what it may look like inside.

Harry takes his helmet off, beckoning me to step closer to him. I shift and he pulls my hand, making me glance around afraid that someone will notice how inappropriately close we are.

"Here," He slides a beanie on to my head.
"So you'll keep worm," He kisses my cheek before slipping the helmet back on and starting the engine. I step back, so I don't get hit, my cheeks giving me away as always. The weather is much cooler today, so Harry gave me one of his hoodies to wear before we left.

I am trying to keep my heart from jumping up and down, remembering my promise to myself last night.

I must say it is quite hard though, with the soft way Harry had woke me up this morning, brushing my hair out of my face, and kissing my forehead. He had food ready for me, and the hoodie to fight the chill outside. He said he had a surprise for tonight too.

I touch the beanie on my head, feeling its soft texture. I smile as I walk towards the front gates, happy Liam kept his promise to wait for me there.
"I know that beanie," He gushes touching it slightly.
"He just put it on my head when I got off his bike," I beam, letting myself get excited for only a moment, promising myself I will get myself in control.
"That was thoughtful," Liam winked.

"So, family friends kiss?" Luke catches up to us, his group of followers not with him for once.
I ignore him, knowing it is best to keep quiet.

"Hi Cassie," People who never spoke to me before call out as Liam and I make our way to class.

"Everyone is kissing up to you now that you've been known to stay by him," Liam whispers.

"Cassie, are you and Harry coming to my party Friday?" Dafni is standing in front of us, and I can't help but think she should get together with Luke, it is like they are made for each other.

"Yeah, you should totally come," One of the girls to her left chips in.

"Oh, and I like you beanie.. Is it Harry's?" Dafni smiles and winks.

That's it! I have had enough! And school hasn't even started.

"Let me let you in on a secret," I start in the sweets voice I can master.
"You should remember that when you kiss an ass, it doesn't kiss back," and with that, I grab Liam's arm and pull him past the plastics and into our classroom.

"Wow Cass, I have never heard you speak that way to anyone- that was just- ACE!" Liam chuckles in amazement.

"If the whole day is going to be like this I am leaving," I snap.

"Calm down, I'm on your side," Liam hold up his hands a smirk on his face.

"This is just mad- how do they even know my name or who I am?" I whisper to him. I can feel the eyes on my back, and I am thankful for the beanie covering my face.
"The price to pay for dating Harry Styles, the prince of drifting," Liam grins.
"Drifting? I thought he races," I'm baffled.
"Yeah but that is just for fun.. I don't even know if he drifts anymore since he got busted for it," Liam explains.

"Busted? What?" I say a little too loudly.
"Drifting is like sliding on the dirt, letting the car spin.. he was known to be the best, but it is kind of like not allowed," Liam whispers.
"Illegal?" I try to understand.

"Well not exactly.. I'm not sure what went down that day when he got arrested, but since then he stopped, unless they still do.. I don't know, they keep it quiet that's for sure,"
"How do you know so much about it?" I inquire
Liam shrugs, and turns to the teacher who enters the class room.

I don't get another chance to ask Liam about the drifting, and I have a feeling I shouldn't ask Harry about it.

I keep thinking about Liam's words, he knows all this because he has read about it, so to find out more I would need to do some more google work.
It is launch and I take my time to gather my things from the desk, not wanting to have anyone else talk to me.

My phone rings, and it is Harry. I know if I'll answer I will start pestering him about drifting, not being able to stop so I let it go to voice mail and join Liam.

We decide to sit outside because of the cold, knowing that most of the students will stay indoors.

"Liam, how do you know so much about Harry and the drifting?" I question him, happy I won't need to search for the answers myself after all.

"There was this website that used to update about all the illegal racing and drifting. You needed a code to get in, and it would change every week, but after a few months the webpage just vanished and right after, Harry got arrested," Liam bites into his food.

I notice then I forgot the food Harry packed for me, though I wasn't hungry anyway so I just leaned on the table listening to Liam.

"Get away from her!" Liam yells suddenly standing to his feet. But it's too late. The beanie is snatched from my head and there is laughter behind me. I turn to find Luke and his stupid friends stood behind us, Harry's beanie in his fist.

"Give it back!" I demand trying my best to mimic Harry. But I am not as big or scary as he could be, and they are not fazed by me.

"You heard her give it back!" Liam hisses. We are outnumbered and Luke knows it by the sly smile on his face.

"What are you going to do Payne? Fight me?" Luke bullies Liam.
"No- you know what? You can have it, just get lost," I give in, not wanting them to fight, since it is what Luke wants.

"Wow Ashton did you hear that? She is saving Payne's ass from a fight," Luke shrieks with delight.

"I guess you should keep the beanie then, you know as a token," Ashton smirks beside him.
"I reckon I will," Luke tucks the beanie into his pocket.

"I reckon you give it back!" The raspy voice I have grown to love sounds behind him, and it is my turn to smirk if I wasn't afraid myself from the look on Harry's face.

The boys freeze in their places, not knowing what to do.

"Did you hear me?" Harry takes a step towards Luke.

"Yes, he did, he will give it back, right Luke?" I hurry to stand between Harry and Luke, knowing if Harry lashes out he will get in trouble for hurting Luke and I have enough trouble in school without it.

"I was just teasing her," Luke stutters handing the beanie over to me. When the hat is in my palm, Harry snatches it and pulls it softly over my head.

"Get lost! And if you ever talk to her again I will break you," Harry promises him in a low voice.
"What are you doing here?" I question, when the boys are gone.
"You forgot your food, and you didn't answer your phone so I brought it," That is when I notice the bag in his fist.

"Oh, thank you," A light smile appears on my face, and I see how his eyes soften immediately.
"You should have taken it from them," Harry says to Liam more then to me.

"Harry, we were outnumbered and they are on the football team, you don't fight them," I answer swiftly, not wanting Harry to take his frustration out on my only friend at school.
"Well, maybe you should start- they need to know they can't just do whatever they want all the time,"

"Well, now they do," I sigh, hoping he is right and they will stay away from me.
I guess I'll see you at 15:30," Harry replies, turning to leave. I glance at Liam, mouthing him to stay there, when I rush to Harry's side.

"Thank you," I whisper, matching my stride to his.

"I'm thankful I showed up when I did, are you always picked on at school?" He frowns.

"No, nobody even knew who I was until you showed up here," I mumble.
"Cass! You are not a nobody! Don't let people make you feel that way," He demands.
His tone reminds me my promise not to attach myself to him more then what I have, so I step back.

"Very well,"

"That's is? You don't have a feisty comeback for me?" Harry raises his brows.

"No, I'm going to head back to Liam, thanks for bringing me the food," I turn to leave, but I feel his fingers close around my forearm and tug me back to him. Harry's hand comes to my cheek, pulling up my face to him.

"Bye," He kisses my lips softly, letting me go, a smirk on his face.

I glance sideways. I know we were seen, and the few students around confirm by their wide eyes and whispering.

I walk shamefully back to Liam, trying to cool my cheeks with my cold hands.
"I don't want to hear it," I say sitting back down at our table.
"Well, he did you a big favor just now," He says quietly.
"How's that?" I want to know.
"Because the combination of him almost kicking Luke and him kissing you, sends out a very clear message to keep away," Liam shrugs.

I watch him with careful eyes, I need someone to trust, someone on my side.

"I'm scared Liam," I admit quietly.

"From Harry? I can understand why, but I don't think he would hurt you," Liam's eyes turn serious when he meets my gaze.

"Not the way you think, I'm scared I am falling for him, and when he leaves, I will fall apart," I whisper.
