THE DEATH OF ME

Owing Him

Mr. Fixen demands our phones, promising to give them back at 18:00.
I swiftly send Harry a message saying 'detention' before my phone is collected and glance at Liam.

"All right you lot, I will be back in an hour to check on you, in the meantime get some work done- and if any trouble is caused.." He gives us all his famous glance, and heads out of the class.

"So, Cassie, is it true? Are you dating Harry Styles?"
It is Luke. It's just my luck to have detention with him.
"Can you just leave me alone?" I ask of him, note even turning to acknowledge.
"You know that if you are, you should be nicer to his fans," He answers with a sly smile.
"Since when are you on Harry's team? You used to be all about Ben!" Liam spits at him.
"I am with the winning team," Luke smirks.

"Ain't he too old for you? Or better yet- ain't you too young? He can get in so much trouble," The girl from the back speaks up again. I send Liam a fearful glance just when the door opens up and Mr. Fixen is there waving a phone around.

"Who does this phone belong to?" He questions, all of us looking up. I am fixated on the phone in his hand, the screen lit up and Harry's frown on it, as his name blinks.

"Oh my gosh- I- t-that's mine!" I scramble to my feet, to get to him before someone decides to get to it before me.

"Is this really Harry Styles calling you? The racer?" He questions with wide eyes.
I nod, peeking at Liam for help.

"How do you know each other?" He asks, a hint of admiration in his voice.

"I- um.. ah.." I can feel the class watching me, waiting to hear my answer.

"He's a family friend, we go way back," I finally manage to say, my shoulders tense as Harry calls again.

"Well, he won't stop phoning so you might want to answer, it might be important," Mr. Fixen hands over the phone.

I send Liam a glance before answering.

"Harry?" I speak into the phone, aware of everyone paying attention.
"What the fuck Cassie? I am waiting out here like an ass wipe for you, and you don't answer?" He shouts, and I pray to god that Mr. Fixen can't hear him.
"I got detention and my phone was taken away," I reply.

"Fuck detention! Come out I am waiting!" I roll my eyes, ready to just hang up on him, not appreciating him cursing me out this way, but then I decide to try and use Harry to get out early.
"Mr. Fixen," I say holding the phone up while Harry's still on the line, making sure he can hear the conversation.

"I forgot, but my Nan is out of town, and I am staying with Harry until she comes back, and he came to fetch Liam and me since we need to give in a project and he is waiting and he is late for.. and is it alright if we leave early?" I beg, knowing Harry can hear every word.
"You can ask him yourself if you'd like," I offer him my phone.

Mr. Fixen does not need to be asked twice. He takes my phone and walks out to talk to Harry. I turn and give Liam a thumbs up, as the class whispers around me.
Mr. Fixen is back a moment later, releasing Liam and me early.

"I can't believe you lied that way, brilliant!" Liam chuckles as we ran out coming to a stop in front of an angry Harry.

"That is the last time you give a teacher to speak to me! Do you understand?! I am not a fucking parent!" He sneers at me.
"Can you calm down? I'm here now," I am quite amused with Harry's reaction, wishing I could have heard his conversation with Mr. Fixen.

"You are lucky I have the car, or your friend would have been walking home," Harry pulls the door open ignoring my comment.
Liam climbs into the back seat, looking like a happy golden retriever.

We ride silently, Harry stopping in front of my house.
Liam got out, thanking Harry and promising to see me at school tomorrow, as he heads to his home.

I wave and turn to stride up the walkway, when I am stopped by Harry.
"Not so fast," He turns me, a wicked smile on his lips.
"What? I'm sorry you had to speak to my teacher ok?" I roll my eyes. I won't let him get to me with his shouting and cursing.
"Good, but you owe me for that," His smile widens and I have a feeling I have dug myself into a hole here.

"Fine, I owe you," I swallow. Opening the door and stepping in.
"Yes, and you will pay up.. You told your teacher you are staying with me until your Nan comes back,"

Oh no.

"So guess what? You will go straight up stairs to pack your bag, and we are leaving to my flat," His smile is smug and I feel like kicking myself.

I would love to see Harry's flat, and after having a taste of what it's like to sleep in the same bed with him, I am not quick to turn him down, but staying at his flat with him will complicate things for us more then what they already are, and it is moving way faster then we have decided to.

"But my Nan is coming home tomorrow," I try.

"So? Pack only for tonight then," He throws himself onto the couch.
"Fine," I give in, starting my way up the stairs. A knock on the door stops me. I head back down and pad to the door.

"Hi Cass," Darcy smiled at me, Lenni in her arms.
Darcy is my next door neighbor and Lenni is her 10 month old daughter.

"Hi Darcy, how are you?" I smile, planting a kiss on the baby's cheek making her giggle.
"Good, is Nan home?" She questions.
"No, she's out of town, her sister isn't too well these days," I explain.
"Oh no, I hope she feels better, are you busy? Finn is out of town and I was just called form school that Max has fallen and cracked open his chin, and they took him to the hospital, can you please watch Lenni for a little while? Just until I get back?" She begs me.

"Sure, don't worry, I hope Max is all right," I say as Darcy hands over Lenni and her bag.

"You're a life saver, I hope it won't take too long," She smiles, running to her car.
I close the door after me, walking with the baby to the living room.

My Nan takes care of Lenni and Max all the time, so I am used to having them around.

"Hell no! Give her back," Harry shakes his head at me.
"I can't her brother is in the hospital and the dad is off on a business trip, so we need to look after her until her mum is back," I inform him.
"We? You mean you! I don't do babies," Harry gets up to his feet.

I put Lenni down and watch as she starts walking slowly over to where Harry was standing.
For a 10 month old baby she is pretty smart and high functioning.
"Get it away from me!" Harry steps back, alarmed by the smiling girl.
"Come Lenni, let's get away from the old grouch and find you something to do," I pick her up and stick my tongue out at him.

"I am not a grouch! We had plans and that thing ruined them," He pouts.

"Harry, I am not making you stay here with me, so if you feel like leaving its fine, you can go ahead," I snap, sitting down with the baby on my lap, facing me.

Lenni is smiling at me, a few teeth showing. She has dimples and for just a moment I wonder how Harry's child might look like. The thought makes my cheeks turn pink and I don't let my eyes move from the baby's face, so I won't need to see if Harry is watching because if he is, he for sure will notice the change of colour.

Lenni smiles and leans forward, placing her cheek on my chest as her little hands clench at the fabric of my shirt. I let out a soft giggle and kiss the top of her head.

I love this girl, she is so easy and always so happy and smiling, which makes it hard for anyone to stay nonchalant next to her, well, everyone except Harry.

When I finally find the courage to look up, I find Harry gazing at me and Lenni, a look I have never seen before on his face- admiration.

"What?" I inquire, pulling a face.
"You! I have never seen you like this before," He shakes his head.
"Like what?" I smirk.
"So.. So.. Happy, I didn't know you liked kids," He raises a brow.
"I don't! Well.. I don't really know any other kids except Lenni and Max, and they are good kids, not like the ones you find yelling and screaming on the street,"

Harry takes a seat next to us, and Lenni sits straight smiling at him.

"She's looking at me," He says, not taking his eyes off of her.
"I can see, watch something cool," I say, and then clunk my tongue making a clicking noise.

Lenni's head swipes to face me mimicking the sound with a bright smile. It makes me giggle, and to my amazement so does Harry.

"She's quite bright for a baby," He grins.
"Come on, let's get you something to drink," I tell her putting her on the floor, letting her follow me into the kitchen.

This is about the time, Nan used to give her a bottle of milk, so I decide to try it, and maybe she will take a nap after it.

When the bottle is ready I give Lenni to hold it, but she refuses, wanting me to hold it for her myself as she sat.
"Smart cookie," Harry watches us from the couch, and I can't help but notice he is warming up to her.

It is uncomfortable to feed her sitting the way we are on the floor, so I pick Lenni up and move next to Harry, noting him moving away from us as I hold the bottle up for her again.
"How do you know what to do?" He questions.
"I help Nan look after them sometimes," I shrug.

My phone rings, and I get up, placing Lenni in Harry's arms without thinking.
"No! Take it away! Take it now goddammit!" Harry calls after me, but I ignore him, shifting to get my phone out of my bag. It's my Nan and I walk away to answer it, not before taking one last glance at Harry holding Lenni as if she's a bomb ready to explode any moment.

"Nan? How are you?" I ask.
"Cassie? I'm all right love, but I have some bad news, I won't be coming home tomorrow.. I will stay another few days, since she's giving me a hard time.. I'm sorry for leaving you for such a long time," Nan sounds tired, and I feel kind of bad for her.

"Can I help? Do you want me to head up there?" I question, even though I already know her answer.

"No love, you go to school and keep your grads up, I hope I left you enough money, it should last a few more days,"

"Don't worry Nan, I hope she feels better, though I do miss you," I say truthfully.
"Oh my wonderful child, I miss you too,"

I head back to the living room and stop short to find Harry humming to Lenni who is sleeping in his arms. He notices me and shushes me beckoning to the sleeping baby.

"I am going to pack," I tell him and his eye narrow at me.

"You get to babysit me for another few days," I wink heading up stairs to get a bag ready for my next few days at Harry's flat.
