Summer Nights Romance.

Chapter X.

DEVIN’S P.O.V.

Liam hadn’t spoken to her all morning. He despised the fact that Harry was tagging along on their mountain trip, but it wasn’t Devin’s idea. It was all Collins. Her younger sister had surprised Devin this morning when Harry came knocking with a duffel bag in hand.

The drive was a grueling ten hours and Devin was sandwiched between the window and Collins, who had insisted that Harry ride with them. With Liam driving, Devin could practically see him blowing smoke through his ears with the thought of Harry behind him. Directing the way in the front was little Ashton. He was always cocky to Devin and she never appreciated him. She saw him as a potential future Louis and Lord knew that the fraternity did not need another one of those.

They took a left, following Niall’s rental van that held the others. They were pulling up to a beautiful tall lodge cabin, three stories and lit all around. It looked warm and inviting and the greenery surrounding the walls only added to the beauty of it all.

“I didn’t know you were so…” Ashton cleared his throat. “Well off.”

“Rich,” Collins clarified. Devin slapped her sister’s upper arm impatiently.

“Don’t be rude,” Devin hissed.

“How the hell is that rude?” Collins spat.

Harry cleared his throat as if to settle the matter. And strangely enough, it did. Liam parked the car after stepping on the brake rather harshly.

“It’s gorgeous Liam!” Evelyn gushed, clasping her hands together and swooning at the view.

“Thanks,” Liam let out a soft chuckle as the others rushed inside to fight over the rooms with the best view and a private bathroom.

“It really is beautiful,” Devin tried, but Liam was unloading his van, rather forcefully throwing the duffels about. Liam raised his eyebrows in response. “Are you going to be angry all week?” Devin spat.

“Look, I don’t appreciate Harry being here. And you know that yet here he is… staying in my family’s mountain house,” Liam said through gritted teeth.

“Why does it bother you? The condoms he was offering me… he wasn’t offering… they fell out of purse. Sp they were mine,” Devin sighed.

“That wasn’t our brand though,” Liam looked puzzled. “What are all of these secrets?”

“There aren’t any secrets! And I told you that he wasn’t anything important? We were an accident,” Devin sputtered. Dropping her jaw when she realized she said too much.

“You said you were simply childhood friends… what do you mean ‘you guys were an accident’?” Liam’s eyes had a gleam in them that Devin didn’t recognize. It was such a condescending gaze, an amazed anger.

“Exactly! Just friends! You have nothing to worry…” but Devin couldn’t finish. Liam held up his hand and his eyes fell.

“No,” was all he said. “No more lies. Go inside. Find Harry. I…” he looked appalled. “So many lies.”

Devin’s heart fell at his tone and she was left standing alone outside, feeling emptier than ever before.

ASHTON’S P.O.V.

“So, who’s your bunk buddy?” Ashton asked, throwing himself on the queen sized bed.

“Get off my bed.” Collins ordered, not amused.

“Well, some of us need to double up, there aren’t enough beds. So if you need somebody. You know to keep you warm,” Ashton grabbed Collins wrist and she just stared at him. Suddenly the bathroom attached to the bedroom door opened and out stepped Harry.

“Bathroom looks nice,” Harry concluded. “Hey,” he smiled at Ashton.

“Looks like I’ve got the keeping warm part covered. Thanks though … babe,” Collins smiled proudly as Ashton dropped her wrists and stood ready to depart from the bedroom, but the doorway was being blocked.

“Harry! There you are,” Devin stood, hands on hips.

“Hey Devin,” Harry’s voice gave a slight crack, but he tried covering it with clearing his throat.

“I need you; get your bags,” Devin ordered. Her eyes were icy and impatient.

“Why?” Collins crossed her arms now. Ashton watched quietly, a smirk growing on his face as Harry fumbled around, gathering his things.

“He’s sharing a room with me,” Devin sputtered.

“What are you talking about? Liam’s here. He’s your bunk buddy,” Collins said, her voice cold yet confused.

“Liam and I… shut up Collins! Harry, follow me,” Devin bade fleeing the doorway, followed by her new shadow, also known as Harry.

This left Collins and a large grin on Ashton’s face.

“Looks like it’s just us babe,” Ashton winked.

RILEY’S P.O.V.

The house was definitely breathtaking but Riley was already bored. She found herself on the deck sitting impatiently waiting for the others to come with an idea for the night. The deck door slide open and Riley didn’t bother turning around to see who it was.

“Hey Rils,” Evelyn sighed, sitting next to her. Riley gave a weak smile and pretended to be asleep.

“I think Louis and Liam are going into town to get some drinks and we’re gonna play some games.”

“Games?” Riley sat up, looking bored and unimpressed.

“Not like checkers,” Evelyn laughed at her joked. “Like truth or dare, beer pong, never have I ever… you know fun drinking games.”

“Joy,” Riley remained unimpressed.

The others began to join them on the deck, awaiting the groceries. Louis and Liam later showed, arms full with brown bags overflowing with bottles.

“Where’s the food?” Niall spat, pushing the alcohol around the bag.

“We didn’t get any,” Louis said, shrugging.

“Dude, we haven’t eaten since this morning,” Niall said.

“You were gone for like two hours. How did you only shop for alcohol?” Riley said, not actually caring about the food but wanting to give Louis a hard time.

“Why don’t you go out then?” Louis shot.

“Well we’re hungry,” Devin said.

“Then go get food,” Liam said. “Maybe Harry will get you something.”

A silence set in. Tension rising.

“Gimme the keys,” Collins said, holding her hand out and looking at Liam.

“I’m not letting you drive my car, nice try. If you’re anything like your sister, you’d crash,” Liam opened his beer and flung it back.

“Obviously you haven’t noticed, I’m nothing like her,” Collins started.

“Let’s go get food,” Mikey stepped in. Niall held up the rentals keys and led everyone but Liam and Louis to the van.

“This is gonna be a rough week,” Evelyn whispered to no one in particular.

Yet Riley couldn’t help but agree.

Thirty minutes in. Bottoms up.

Liam was growing bitter and no one had ever seen his eyes so cold and unkind.

Devin was on her third margarita when she offered up the game Truth or Dare and everyone cheered with clinking bottles and sloppy laughter. The first couple rounds were simple and appropriate. They included shoving marshmallows into mouths and truths that were irrelevant.

But soon, everyone was too many drinks in and they were growing hazy and faded.

“Calum! Your turn!” Evelyn slurred, holding up a plastic cup.

“Truth,” Calum was nervous but played it calm. He was tasting a mere tipsy level.

“Boring,” Luke yawned making Calum clench his fist.

“Have you ever actually been in love?” Evelyn asked, the guys sighed, annoyed but the girls leaned forward, intrigued.

“I think so,” Calum nodded, staring at Evelyn.

“You think so? Is that a yes? How do you only think?” Evelyn accused.

“Fine. I know so. The answer is yes,” Calum swallowed more Blue Moon.

“Really?” Evelyn looked strangely surprised. “Who?”

“Yeah… who Cal?” Luke leaned forward tauntingly, a sly grin spreading on his lips.

“You’ll have to wait for the next round,” Calum said through clenched teeth, fighting back an urge to take out Luke.
