One Way or Another

thirty-six.

"Harry, just take a breath." He keeps pacing and tugging at his hair. "Baby, please calm down. You're making me nervous."

"How the hell is he even here?"

"I don't-"

"He fucking knows where we live! He came right to our front door, how did he even get into this building? He looks like a damn homeless person!" he shouts.

He kicks one of Sophie's toys across the room and I flinch. Yes, Harry gets angry. Yes, I've seen him upset before. But he's never been this hard to console, this out of his mind with anger. He doesn't get physical like this; I've always admired his ability to stay cool in situations where most people would lose it. Now he's losing it.

"I don't know," I mutter, unsure if he's actually asking me or not. He seems like he's talking to himself more than he's talking to me, but who knows. He's being crazy.

"Fuck." He pushes his fingers through his hair again and finally stops moving, hands on his hips while he stares blankly at the wall.

"Harry-"

"This is just fucking perfect," he continues, his voice gradually getting louder. "I finally get my shit together and we're finally in a good place. Of fucking course he shows up now."

"Harry, you need to try to calm down."

"You don't get it! I can't!" he shouts. He turns and kicks another toy, harder this time so that it hits the wall. "This is the worst thing that could happen to us!"

"Okay." Enough of this. I walk over to him and tug on his arm so he stops pacing. He shakes me off at first but I stand in front of him, both my hands on his arms to make him look at me. "Stop. I know you're pissed and I get that, but if you keep yelling you're going to scare Sophie."

"Fuck." He covers his faces with his hands. "I'm sorry, I just can't..."

"I know." I pull his hands from his face and put my own there. "I can't imagine how you feel right now."

"I'm scared," he says. He's what? His hands wrap around my wrists and there's desperation in his eyes as he stares at me.

"Why?"

"He knows where we live," he says. "He's...who knows what he'll do?"

"You don't think he'd come back after that, do you?" I ask. Harry was pretty damn intimidating, I hardly doubt he'd try to come back here.

"Who knows? It's not like people on drugs have predictable behaviour. When he's desperate he's...it's scary, Savannah. I don't want him anywhere near you or Sophie. Him being in this country makes me want to move to Canada."

"He doesn't even know Sophie exists," I remind him. They've never met and I highly doubt Gemma and Anne have been updating him. "And I can take care of myself."

He smiles a little.. "You know I'm going to worry either way."

"Yeah." I wrap my arms around him and he buries his faces against my neck. "We're going to be fine. Everything's going to be fine."

"He wants money," he says quietly. "How does he even know you have money?"

"First of all, we have money. It's not mine. Second, it's not like he couldn't find out. Put my name into google and my company will come up and my parents. It wouldn't be hard to figure out."

"I guess, but...I don't know. I don't like it."

"Maybe...maybe if we just give it to him he'll leave us alone," I suggest quietly. Immediately he's shaking his head and stepping back from me. "Harry-"

"It doesn't work that way," he snaps. "If we give it to him once he'll just keep coming back every time he needs more. We're not giving that scumbag anything."

"Okay," I agree. It's Harry's father and he knows the best way to deal with him, but all I'm worried about is our daughter. If he's a threat to her I just want him gone.

"He shouldn't be out of England," Harry says. "He shouldn't be allowed to leave the country on parole. Maybe if I called someone..."

"Harry, you don't need to worry about this now." I place my hands on his chest and he sighs, gently pushing my hair behind my ear. "Let's go to bed and figure it out tomorrow, okay?"

"Okay." He kisses my forehead and I take his hand to lead him to our room. If I had to bet money on it I would bet that Harry won't be sleeping at all tonight, but may as well try anyway. When we're both under the covers I lay on my side so I'm facing him, Harry looking right back at me.

"Are you okay?" I whisper, brushing my fingers through his hair. He sighs and closes his eyes, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me closer.

"No," he admits. "But I will be. I am going to figure this out, Savannah. I'd do anything to protect you and our children."

Goosebumps raise on my arms at the sure tone of his voice and I know with every fibre of my being that he's telling the truth. Harry is a lot of things and he's by no means perfect, but when it comes to his family there is nothing he wouldn't do. I have complete faith that this will work itself out and that we're all going to be fine. If we've gotten through all of the shit we've had to deal with so far, then we are going to make it. We just have to.

"Why?"

"Because, strangers can be bad."

"Why?" I hear Sophie's little voice ask again, My brow furrows as I push the door to the kitchen open, finding Harry leaning on the counter in front of Sophie's chair.

"What are you two talking about?" I ask. Harry smiles at me and my hand runs along his back on my way past him to the coffee mugs.

"I was just telling Sophie to be careful around strangers," Harry says. I turn and raise my eyebrows at him. "Just to be safe."

"Harry," I say quietly. "Please don't scare her."

"I'm not." He stands and puts his arm around me, pressing his lips to the side of my head. "I just want her to be safe. And make sure that she only goes home from daycare with Mummy or Daddy."

"Me know!" she squeals.

"Maybe we should have a code word or something," he says to me while I pour myself some coffee. Harry has reverted to decaf so we don't have to make a separate pot for me because of the baby.

"I think you're being a little dramatic," I tell him.

"I just don't want someone to-"

"Can we talk about this later?" I say quickly. I don't need Sophie being afraid of every person that tries to talk to her.

"Sorry." He smiles and kisses me. "How are you feeling today?"

"Actually, not so great."

"You should stay home with us."

"Us?"

"Yeah, I was thinking Soph could stay home with me today. I don't start work again until after next week, so she should just stay home with me for all of it," he explains.

"Harry," I laugh. "That sounds really fun for you two, but if she gets used to staying at home with you it's going to be a nightmare to bring her back."

"But Mooooooom," he whines.

"Mummyyyyyyy," Sophie whines. She smiles at Harry and he gives her a thumbs up. I just shake my head at both of them.

"She can stay home today, but on the other days you have to at least bring her for the morning," I bargain. He groans and puts his hands on my waist, his body flush with mine. I lift my mug to my lips and peer up at him.

"Please, baby?" He takes my mug and sets it on the counter, taking the liberty of putting my arms around his waist. "I want to spend time with her."

"You can," I remind him, tracing his butterfly tattoo with one hand. "But tomorrow she goes back for the mornings."

"How about she stays with me for the rest of the week and then I'll bring her in the mornings myself so you don't have to deal with it."

A sigh passes my lips and I shake my head at his stupid adorable smile. "I'll think about it."

"Fair enough." He kisses my lips and heads for the fridge. "What do we want for breakfast?"

"I'm going to get ready, but make sure she has some grapes or something," I tell him as I walk away. I kiss Sophie's cheek as I pass her and make my way back to the bedroom to get ready for work. I'm a little jealous that Harry gets to stay home with Sophie, but at least I still have my spleen and stuff.

"Morning, Madison."

She smiles as I walk by. "Hey, Savannah. There was someone here to see you earlier."

"Shit, sorry. I know I'm a little late. Who was it?" I pick up the stack of mail on the corner and start sifting through it.

"I don't know, he didn't say. He said something about being your family? He needed to talk to you about a loan or something."

"Holy shit." I walk around her desk and she looks a little frightened. "What did he look like?"

"He umm...he was kind of tall and he had dark hair with some grey in it...he looked like a drug addict, to be honest," she explains. "Why?"

"Oh my gosh," I breathe. "He knows where my office is?"

"He? Who is he?"

"He's...he's Harry's father but they don't speak and he's not exactly a good person." Fuck, how did he get here? Why is he... "Okay, can you see if security has him on camera? If they get his face make sure they all know not to let him in here. If he comes back again I want them calling me personally, okay?"

"Got it," she says. She nods and sits back down. "Should I be worried?"

"No, I'm sure it's nothing." Lie. Not nothing, he's a crazy drug dealing ex-convict that apparently is desperate for money.

I head into my office and sit down with a blank expression. This feels like it's going to get really messy and I have no idea how we're supposed to deal with that. Harry just got out of the hospital, I don't need him getting into any more firghts. Who knows how dangerous this could get? And I believe he'll do anything to keep us safe. Anything scares me.

"Hello?" I call, walking into our place. Harry and Sophie come running around the corner, Sophie completely naked and Harry chasing her with a towel. She giggles as she runs up to me and as soon as her arms are around my leg I feel my pants get wet.

"Bath time," Harry explains. He pries her off my leg and picks her up wrapped in the towel. "How was your day?"

"Umm..." Oh, your father came to visit my office. "It was fine."

"Good." He kisses me while Sophie squirms around in his arms. "Sophie decided to dive into her yogurt, so we had a bath."

"Down!" she yells. He laughs and puts her down, her naked little bum disappearing around the corner again. We both laugh and he kisses me once more. But this time he doesn't stop for a few minutes and by the time he does my brain is fuzzy and I feel like I could just melt.

"Hi," he says against my lips. I sigh and press mine against his again. He hugs me tight against his body and slides his tongue between my lips. A quiet moan leaves my mouth and he separates from me again. "Have I ever told you I love you?"

"Once or twice," I whisper. I peck his lips once more and slide my hands down his arms. "Did you have fun today?"

"We went to the park and got some groceries."

"How housewife of you."

He laughs. "Yeah, it was nice, though."

"That's good." He lets me leave his embrace finally and I head for Sophie's room with Harry behind me. "So, I was thinking about something."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah." I get some pajamas for Sophie and attempt to dress her as I continue, Harry sitting on the end of her bed. "Maybe we should take a trip somewhere. With the three of us."

"Yeah, we could do that."

"Once I have the baby we won't be able to, so now would be a good time."

"I said yes, you don't have to convince me," he teases. Sophie goes back to playing when she's dressed so I sit beside him to watch her. "We'll go somewhere."

Anywhere would be good. I just feel like we need to get away from here for a while.
