One Way or Another

thirteen.

"Soph?" I turn when my door opens, not seeing a little blonde girl but a rather large curly-headed man.

"Wrong," Harry grumbles, lifting my covers and climbing into my bed. I laugh as he scoots over towards me, his arm around my waist to pull my back against his chest.

"I thought we said no sleeping in the same bed," I whisper. He sighs against the back of my neck.

"It's seven in the morning and you probably won't be sleeping anymore, so it doesn't count."

"Oh, is that so?"

"Mhmm." He kisses the back of my neck and nudges his one leg between mine. "I might sleep, though, so you should probably stay awake so we don't break that rule of yours."

I laugh and turn around in his grip, which proves to be difficult. His eyes are closed but he's smiling, a lazy and heart-stoppingly beautiful smile.

"Can I get up for a minute?" I ask quietly. He shakes his head and pulls me tighter against him. "Harry, I'll come right back."

"Promise?"

"Promise. I just want to brush my teeth and check on Sophie."

He sighs in contemplation and opens his eyes halfway. "All right, fine. But after two minutes I'm coming to get you."

I just laugh and kiss his chin before he finally lets me go. The oversized t-shirt I wore to bed falls just under my bum and as I go into the bathroom I turn to see Harry staring at me. I catch him with a shake of my head and he just smirks, shrugging his shoulders. I guess he's allowed to check me out now.

I quickly brush my teeth and brush my fingers through my hair so I don't look quite so dishevelled. Harry's eyes are closed, his head half buried in a pillow as he lays on his stomach when I pass by to go to Sophie's room. I quietly push the door open, pleased to see her still sound asleep. When I get back into bed Harry turns onto his side again.

"She's still asleep," I inform him. "Maybe she'll sleep in."

"That would be lovely."

I laugh. "You sound like your mother."

"Could be worse." He nudges his leg between mine again and I giggle. "What?"

"Your leg hair is tickling me," I admit. He laughs and opens eyes. "I never remember that being a problem before. Did you used to shave?"

He laughs. "Yeah, I did. When we broke up I stopped so now I actually have hair."

"That's a little weird, Harry."

He shakes his head. "I've always had hair on my legs. Maybe its your legs that are the problem."

"My legs are fantastic," I defend proudly, kidding obviously. I feel goosebumps on them when his hand rests on my knee, slowly gliding up the smooth skin. He leans in towards me and lifts my leg so it hooks around his hip.

"They're incredible," he agrees lowly. He moves closer to kiss me, but I move back with my nose crinkled up like a paper bag. "What? I just gave you a compliment, you're supposed to kiss me now."

"Oh, is that how it works?" I laugh. "I will kiss you, but will you brush your teeth first?"

He laughs and props his head up on his hand. "You don't like my morning breath?"

"Has anyone ever in the world liked morning breath?"

"Probably. There's probably been some near-perfect person that has morning breath that smells minty fresh without effort."

"Well that person is not you."

"I am pretty close to perfect, though."

I laugh again and push at his chest. "Go brush your teeth."

"Fine," he huffs. He flings the covers back dramatically and my face heats at the sight of him in only his boxers. That's something I've always appreciated. "Quit checking me out."

When he turns around I stick my tongue out at him and he laughs, exiting my room to go to the other bathroom. I really don't want to leave this apartment. I feel like as long as we're living here nothing can touch us and we'll continue is the perfect little blissed-out phase. I'm not sure what's going to happen when we go home.

When Harry comes back I'm laying on my back, staring at the ceiling. He crawls back in, his head propped again so he's looking down at me. He starts tracing circles around my belly-button.

"What's on your mind?"

"Nothing," I lie. He rolls his eyes. "What?"

"Savannah, you really don't think I know when you're lying to me by now?"

I turn onto my side, my fingertips reaching for the moth tattooed on his torso. I start tracing it, his eyes glued to my face. I don't want to express this and ruin everything. But I also know he can tell something is wrong and he's not going to let that go very easily.

My door pushes open then, saving me. Harry and I both look at the doorway, Sophie with her bear in her arm with her free hand rubbing her eye. She pads over to the bed and grips the sheets to pull herself up. She's about the height of the bed, so it's so adorably funny to watch her try to climb up. Harry laughs a little and sits up so he can pull her up. She crawls over to me and lays right beside my stomach, curled up against my with her thumb in her mouth, her head hidden against my shoulder. I look up at Harry, who looks a little surprised that she came to me instead of him. I am too, to be honest. She does this almost every morning, but with Harry here I figured she would rather lay with him.

"Hi angel," I coo, rubbing her arm. "Did you sleep good?"

She nods and reaches behind her for her bear, which she lost in the process of climbing. Harry tucks it between her and my stomach, staring down at the two of us.

"Ready to go home today?" I ask quietly. She just sighs and closes her eyes again. I look at Harry. "Apparently it's too early to talk."

He laughs. "She's as much a morning person as you are."

"Hey, I'm not that bad anymore."

"Yeah, but you used to be a nightmare."

"Mean!" I accuse, laughing a little. He lays on his side on the other side of Sophie, his head above hers and close to mine. He puts one hand on my side, also covering Sophie in the process.

"This is nice," he breathes, lifting the covers around us. It really is. The three of us, spending mornings like this. It feels like we're a real family and when I think about that it makes my heart want to burst.

"I don't want to go home," I whisper. He sighs and nods his head.

"I know. I don't either. But I think you're right, it's the best way to make this work."

"Why we here?" Sophie asks when we pull into Harry's building. We agreed to have dinner together at his place and then I would go home with Sophie and spend the night at my place.

"We only stayed at Grandma's for a little while," I explain. "Now we have to go home."

"Stay together?" she asks. Harry looks at me and we shared a pained expression.

"No, princess," I tell her, turning around in my seat so I can see her. "We're going to eat here with Daddy and then we're going to go home, okay?"

"No," she whines.

"This is going to be fun," Harry mutters.

We climb out of his Range Rover and he goes to the back to get his bags while I unbuckle Sophie. She kicks her feet around in protest and I eventually just swing her into my arms and carry the flailing child to the elevator.

"She's exhausted," I groan, trying to get her to stop. "Sophie, enough already."

She starts crying and reaches towards Harry. He sighs and takes her, her head leant on his shoulder.

"Maybe she should just stay with you tonight. She's going to put up a fight for me anyway and she needs to sleep early."

"You sure?" he asks. The elevator opens at his floor and we all pile. I try to reach for the bags, but Harry doesn't let me. "I've got it."

"Yeah, I'm sure," I answer his question. "I don't feel like fighting her on it, to be honest. We both know she's going to want to stay with you. I can just pick her up from daycare tomorrow."

"All right."

We turn the corner to the hallway where Harry's apartment waits and I almost stop dead in my tracks when I see someone standing by his door. Not just any someone, either. The slut from down the hall that always tried to flirt with him while I was still living here.

"You're back," she chirps. I look up at Harry, who looks nervous as hell. My eyes go back to the tiny girl with black hair and a nose piercing.

"So am I," I say sharply. She glares at me.

"Sam, what are you doing here?" Harry asks. She turns happily back to Harry.

"I just wanted to make sure everything was alright, I haven't seen you around in a while."

"Because I haven't been staying here," he says slowly.

"Where were you staying?"

"With me," I butt in. Sophie lifts her head and rubs at her eye while she peers down at the woman.

"She's so adorable, Harry," Sam says. "I can't even get over how much she looks like you."

Harry smiles, a pained, forced expression of his nerves. He should be nervous.

"We have to go," he says, putting the hand with the bag in it behind my back to push me along. "Have a nice night."

"Let me know when you change your mind," she calls. I whip around to look at her, my mouth open, but Harry blocks my vision with his body. He sets his bag down so he can unlock the door and my discomfort and anger grows with each passing second. Sam disappears into her apartment.

"What the hell was that?" I blurt instantly. Harry pushes the door open and sets Sophie down.

"Go play, okay?" he says gently. She nods and heads off to her room. I get his attention next. "What was what?"

"What was Sam asking you to change your mind about?"

"It's nothing," he says, swinging the door shut and walking into the kitchen. "What should we eat?"

"Oh no," I follow him and push the fridge shut again. "We are going to talk about this right now. What the hell happened with her?"

"Would you stop with the swearing?"

"Harry, tell me what happened."

He sighs and rubs a hand over his face. "Nothing, really. It's not a big deal."

"What's not a big deal?"

"Please don't make me tell you this," he says quietly.

"You're scaring me," I admit, my throat tightening. "I've been spending the last two years still in love with you and waiting for something...I thought you...was I wrong about you?"

"No, of course not." He comes closer and I lean back against the counter, my arms crossed in front of me. Having a fight in this apartment...feels too familiar. "I spent the last two years still in love with you, I never moved on from you."

"Tell me what she was talking about, then."

"I didn't...she kept trying to talk to me. She asked me out a dozen times and I said no every time."

"That's what she wants you to change your mind about," I conclude, breathing a sigh of relief. That's not surprising and I can live with him turning her down.

"Not exactly."

My eyes meet his, both swimming with anxiety. My chest tightens and I feel like I'm going to cry. I don't want to know anymore.

"We had just had a huge fight and I was so angry...so I agreed and..." he stops and I pinch my eyes shut, trying to wish that away or pretend I didn't hear it. "Nothing happened, I swear. It didn't-"

"Mean anything?" I finish. I sigh and shake my head. "I can't believe this."

"Savannah-"

"No, Harry. I spent years waiting for us to be able to try this again, if it ever happened at all. And now I find out that you...because we had a fight? Are you kidding me?" I walk to the door and hear him follow.

"Savannah, wait please. Talk to me," he says. I turn with my hand on the door.

"I can't, I can't right now. Harry, I thought...how could you have done this?"

"I never wanted to hurt you," he says quietly. "You know that."

I shake my head. "Maybe we jumped into this too fast," I breathe.

"What? No, Savannah-"

"I just need some time. I need to think, Harry, I'm sorry." He tries to protest but I open the door and step out. "If you bring Sophie to daycare I'll pick her up, okay? I can't be here right now."

I look at Sophie one last time as I walk out of the apartment that carries so many different memories and emotions for me. Now this. I thought Harry and I could work this time, but this changes the way I feel about him. I thought we'd been waiting for each other, but I guess I was wrong.
