The Hitchhiker

Harry's POV

"HI Harry," A girl I don't remember her name says as she passes me.
"Hi," Another waves at me.
I've been here for two weeks and everyone around is so friendly and nice, talking and asking questions about my trip to the US, inviting me to parties and study groups, and I fake a smile and answer kindly, feeling as if I'm not really here, as if I'm watching myself from far away.
I can't believe Tyra said goodbye to me. she gave up on us.. I understand why and yet, I still feel dead inside. I really wanted us to work. I believed that we could, I would go back to visit her, and he can come here, but I guess the distant and the way I left things doomed us.
Sometimes I wish I haven't left at all. I could have stayed in the US with Tyra and the lads, but as I think that I know I'm wrong. There was no place for me there, I had to leave her with her brother and mum let them grow close once again, and become a family. As much as Tyra hates me for leaving I know I've done the right thing. Also it was time for me to face my past. GO back to my own family- my mum and sister, face Megan's parents.
"Harry- what are you doing later today?" A blonde girl questions me. We have a class together but for the life of me I can't remember her name.
Her hair was straight like Tyra's- well not like Tyra's, since Tyra was a natural blonde with natural straight her and this girl wasn't.
"I think I'm going to have an early night, I'm still slightly jetlagged," I smile back apologetically.
"TO bad.. well if you're up for a one on one study let me know," She winks and walks off.
My phone rings and I hurry to fish it out my pocket hoping maybe it might be Tyra calling to explain that email.
"HI Gem," I answer when I see my sister's name on the screen.
"You sound Harry- what's wrong?" She question, concern in her voice.
"Nothing.. just trying to get back into all this studying," I sigh.
"Still thinking of Tyra?"
"I just can't let it go you know? I cannot let this be the end," I explain.
"SO don't!"
"How? She's there and I'm here and I can't see it changing and she was quite clear about us being over in her email," I remind her.
"SO what? if it was real and you don't want it to end then try and save your relationship- call her- do something.. anything is better than walking around moping," Gemma says.
"And what am I going to say? That I love her? She knows that, but she is heart and there is nothing I can do about it from here, and I can't go back I have classes.. I spoke to the lads a few days ago, and she refuses to speak to them about me," I whine.
"Speak to her brother- you helped him right? He owes you- claim that favour," Gem
"I can't do that Gem.."
"Why?? Because you feel uncomfortable? that feeling should be dead to you when it comes to asking for help from that family Harry- if it will help you with Tyra you should do it," Gemma signs this conversation off.
"I'll think about it," I sigh.
"Call me after you speak to Niall alright?"
"Fine.. Thanks Gem," I tell her.
"I love you too, come visit me."
With that, the conversation is over.
Maybe I should give Niall a call, if not for help then just to see how Tyra is really doing.
“Styles! Are you up for a football game? We’re heading out now,” Oliver calls out to me. Oly is my roommate and a rather cool guy. He knows some of what I’ve been through and lets me be when he sees I’m not up for company.
“You know what? Why not,” I high five him.
“Awesome- I’m taking my bag back to our room- wanna join?”
“Sure, so how it go last night with Tanya?” I inquire about his date last night.
“She’s a keeper,” He grins shyly.
“Good, I’m happy for you man,” I tap his back.
“She makes me happy mate, just thinking of her puts a smile on my face,” He lets out a soft chuckle.
“Lucky for you, those are hard to come by,” I nod.
“You would know though.. How’s your American?” Oliver slings an arm around my neck.
My smile fades, I haven’t yet told Oly about Tyra’s email, and the ache of our breakup is back pounding in my chest.
“Dude- what’s wrong?” Oliver notices the change.
“Tyra- she broke up with me,” I sigh.
“She didn’t- when?”
“Last night- in an email,” I tell him.
“No way mate- you and Ty seem like you were destined to find each other – your story inspired so many people you cannot let it end this way,” Oly remarks.
IF it would have come out of anyone’s else’s mouth- it would be a joking matter, however Oly is serious- he was rooting for Tyra and me.
“There is nothing I can do, she is hurt and far away, and I can’t even leave and go visit her since it was hard enough letting them take me back for this semester, if I leave and miss classes that’s it- I’m out,” I huff.
“Have you tried calling her?”
“And say what? Tyra- don’t leave me? We can pull through this- have faith? That doesn’t sound convincing,” I shake my head in defeat.
“You will not give up on this chick mate- what did Gemma say about this?”
“She said I should call Niall get him to help me,” I reply.
“Will he? Being her brother he will for sure hate you, taking his sister’s side,” Oliver states.
“I know.. that’s what I said, but Gem thinks I have nothing to lose by it.”
“She’s right though.. maybe you should try and call him,” Oly decides.
“You might be right.”

Niall’s POV

“Did you get her to send in the papers yet?” Calum questions kicking a rock.
“Na.. She wants to push it off until the fall.. I think that’s a mistake though.. She can’t stay here, she gave enough, it’s time for her life to get back on track.”
“Liam said Tyra broke up with Harry the other day, made it official,” Calum peeks at me.
“I know.. I don’t know man though.. I mean it might be a good thing, putting all of that in the past and starting fresh, he did hurt her by leaving that way… But then again, he was good for her, staying by her side and helping her out when I wasn’t there, I really thought he will stay here, I thought that’s it- he will be her new Tommy and they’ll have their happy ending, guess I was off.”
“ I still can’t believe Harry isn’t here- I mean not seeing his curly head next to Tyra’s blonde one- or hearing that accent of his- it’s wired man,” Calum chuckles.
“Yeah… But I get it.. Tyra told me about him and that Megan girl and what he was doing here in the first place.. Tyra might have put her life on hold for me, but he put his life on hold for her, and that is something we all keep forgetting,” I not.
“Yeah, but I think at some point we all thought their lives continued on together, they seemed so happy..” Calum sighs.
“Yeah well, you never really know what goes on behind closed doors do you?”
My phone rings then and I answer.
“Niall,” I will never forget that accent.
“Heard you’re back in school man,” I tell Harry.
“I am.. I need to talk to you- I need your help,” Harry sounds like Tyra these days, broken and unhappy.
“After what you put my sister through?” I know I’m being a dick- I owe this guy so much.
“I know, that is why I’m calling- you know she broke up with me- I can’t.. Look Niall- your sister, she changed me- she changed all of us, and I know it’s unrealistic to have a long distance relationship but I cannot lose her- I want to make things better- I want her back- that is why I’m calling- please help me,” He says. I know how his sentence end- please help me- you owe me that much, but Harry being Harry doesn’t say it, though it still rings in my ears.
“Harry, when you left.. it was as if Tyra left with you, leaving behind a ghost.. She looks like Tyra and moves like Tyra but it’s not Tyra, it’s not the sister I grew up with- I’m trying so hard to snap her out of it- hell I’m trying to get her to sign up for the summer semester- god knows she will get in- being that good but she refuses, wanting to push it off to the fall, and to be truthful I don’t think she can make it passed this summer by staying here.”
“I know I messed up the way I left- but I really thought I was doing the right thing-“
“I know man- I’m not blaming you- at least I’m trying not to,” I tell him.
“I can help- I have an idea- give me your email address I will send you everything you need.”
Harry explains his plan to me and it sounds quite solid.
“You think you can get her to do it?” He asks once he’s done.
“I might.. this might work,” I trail off.
“Let me know how it goes then,” Harry says, and I can hear the hope in his voice, a big change from the beginning of the call.
The call ends and I turn to Calum.
“I hope this works,” I tell him.
“It will, if anyone can pull it off it’s you,” He smiles.
“This could be good for her- right?” I ask, needing reassurance.
“Damn straight it will, you’re a good brother Niall- you know it right?” He taps my shoulder.
“I try.”
“That was the first thing I noticed about you- it was the first thing I told Tyra when I figured out who she was… it’s crazy how fait brought us all together ha?”
“Yeah.. out of all the people she came to your town and met you, that is crazy,” I agree.
“It was all you though.. if you would have never left, we would have never met, and Tyra would never come looking for you- never meeting Harry.”
“I guess everything happens for a reason..” I sigh.
“Yep.. everything does.”
