The Hitchhiker

Have you seen him?

Harry's POV

She is quiet, looking out the window a little notebook in one hand and her bag clenched to her chest. She is a pretty little thing, her blonde hair blowing in the open window. She put her ear buds away, since I had the radio on.

Every now and then she opens her notebook and looks through it, then she gets this look on her face, determinant. It seems that the journal is reminding her what she is set out to do.

"My name is Harry," I offer, trying to start a conversation. After all I would like to know who my guest is.
"I'm Tyra," She smiles. It is the second smile she flashes me, and what a beautiful smile it is.
"So Tyra, may I ask where you're heading to?" I figure that now she's in the car, she might give me an answer.

"Born to run," Is her reply, and I am confused.
"Uh.. is that a place? Like a club or something you're trying to get to?" I inquire.
"No silly, 'Born to run?' Bruce Springsteen?" She raises her brows slightly while looking at me, a light smile playing on her lips.

"The song?" I offer a half smile trying to mask my confusion.
"Yes! The song," She giggles "Baby this town rips the bones from your back, it's a death trap, it's a suicide rap. We gotta get out while were young `cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run" She recitals a part of the song.

Don't get me wrong, I know this song, I do, but I have no clue what that has to do with the question I asked her.
"I'll go wherever you're driving, as long it's not back to my home town," She finally gives me somewhat of a straight answer.
"I should have asked this before I let you into my car- but how old are you?"
"I just turned 18- I promise!" She holds up her hand in a swear, and for some reason I choose to believe her.

"Harry, where are you headed?" She asks.
"No where really, I'm just driving from place to place, somewhat of a road trip," I explain. I have started this trip a few weeks ago, starting with Texas and moving soon to the next State.

"Road trip before you go back to England?" She lets out a short giggle. I like her laugh, it is sweet, and makes me smile.
"Did my accent give me away then?"
"You might look like a cowboy, but you're far from being one," She winks at me.

"So you're running away, I feel I might be helping a fugitive- can I get in trouble for giving you a ride?" I ask her jokingly.
"Do I look to you like a fugitive?" She gasps jokingly.
"Well, you know, mermaids are beautiful creatures which once get a hold of you, pull you into the depth of the ocean," I point out, "They look all innocent, but then they take your life so.."
She keeps quiet at that, and when I glance at her I find her staring up at me in shock.

"What?" The confusion is back.
"For a boy, you know a hell of a lot about mermaids," She smirks.
"I know a hell of a lot about a lot of things darling," I chuckle.

"So you think I am beautiful?" She changes the subject and I find myself gobsmacked.
"You said mermaids are also beautiful creatures," She repeats my words.
"I did not say also, but yeah, you are beautiful, all girls are,"
"That is not true," She contradicts me.
"Yes it is! All women are beautiful in their own way," I state.
"That is not true! Not all women are pretty," She refuses to acknowledge this being my opinion.
"It is, and I can prove it to you, but first I am hungry, and it is time for breakfast,"

She agrees to the stopping, and once I find a diner I pull in to the lot and park. I picked Tyra up of the highway about three hours ago, and I have a feeling she's been walking all night.
"You can leave your bag in the car," I say, but she shakes her head and carries it with inside.

We find a table and the waitress brings us menus.
I order eggs and tea, and watch as Tyra orders pancakes. She then looks around at the people, making sure to glance at each person in the little space, and it makes me wonder once again, who she is running from.

Once our food is in front of us and we start to eat, I point to the women behind the counter
"Do you think she is pretty?" I ask Tyra.
"She is," She replies.
"And why do you think she is?" I question. I was surprised she said the woman was pretty, and was eager to hear the reason as for why.
"She might be old, and she might be overweight, but she has kind eyes and a nice smile, which she uses often," She answers simply.
"SO do you see my point?" I smirk.
"Yes and no, I understand what you're saying, but I have seen some ugly girls. If they kept their mouth shut and let you think they are pretty, then at least they've got you fooled, but once they open it you see the ugliness within, and then no matter how blue her eyes are, or how white her smile is, she will not shine in your eyes,"

I watch her, and she is not only beautiful but smart too.
She notices my stare and blushes slightly, taking another bite from her food.
"You're right, not all girls are pretty then," I agree.
She gives me a slight nod, and puts down her cutlery.

We are finished eating, and I push my chair back, ready to get back on the road.
"I'll join you in a moment she says getting to her feet. I nod and go wait outside, taking out my pack of smokes which she eyes before following the sign to the loo.

Tyra's POV

When I come out of the bathroom's I look around to make sure Harry is still outside. When I find him standing leaning on his pickup, a cigarette dangling from his lips, I walk up to the cash register.

"Hi there," I smile at the old woman.
"Howdy sugar, how may I help you?" She beams at me.
"You get a lot of people coming in here from the road ha?" I chat, trying my best to come of as friendly as I can.
"Sure do hun, people get hungry on the long drives," She is cleaning the counter and I follow her up and down.

"Well, I was wondering," I start, "Do you remember the people who walk through here? I mean, they must be so many.. but still," I look up at her with hope.
"Who are you looking for hun?" She gets right to the point.
"A boy, blonde, blue eyes- wait I have a picture!"

I take out my old photo of him with his trusty football and show her.
"Handsome young boy he is, but no I haven't seen him," She shakes her head and looks up at me. Her smile falls when she sees the sadness take over my face.
"Lucie! Come take a look at this photo, see if you know the guy," She calls out to the waitress, "If he was here, Lucie would remember," She smiles.
"What photo? Oh.. no love, If that hunk was here I would remember," She says walking away with the tray balanced on her palm.

"Sorry sugar, hope you find him," The old lady gives me a sympathetic smile.
I thank her and walk out to Harry. What was I thinking? That it would be this easy? I was stupid for getting my hopes up.
Harry is watching me as I make my way up to him. An idea then came to me, an I clear my throat before speaking up.
"Harry, can I join your road trip? I'll help with the gas and other expanses," my eyes are wide with the wish of him saying yes. He takes his time, and I am not sure of what his answer may be.
"You might regret it," he finally says.

I don't ask why, or ask for the meaning of his answer. Instead, a wide happy smile is painted on my lips when I say "Does that mean a yes?"

He replies with a slight nod of his head which sends me beaming at him, and for a moment I allow myself to think- maybe, just maybe this can be a good thing, a fresh start, a new beginning, maybe this is my path to finding him.

We climb into the car, and Harry takes another cigarette out and sticks it in between his lips.
"You smoke" I state as I watch him light it and take a long drag.
"Will that be a problem for you?" he asks blowing out the smoke.
"Um.. ah.. I guess not.." I stuttered.
"All right then, let's be off," He starts the pickup, and drives out of the parking lot and on to the highway.

"Why do you smoke?" I questioned once we were on the road again.
"No reason not to," he shrugs and blows out some more smoke. I lean away from him. I hold myself not to fan the fume away from me, which made a smile tug at the corners of Harry's mouth as he notices my discomfort.

"Well what about the fact it is bad for you? And the fact that it stinks! And the smell lingers on your clothes, skin and hair? And it turns your teeth and fingernails yellow? And I can go on some more if you'd like," I count on my fingers, just as I did once before, a while back convincing him to stop smoking too.

"I think you made your point," Harry rolls his eyes.
"AND it is a bad habit, just saying," I couldn't hold that in.
"Well Tyra, this is my decision, so you will need to find a way to live with it if you want to continue with me," He says his voice measured.
I keep quiet thinking my words through, when I finally speaks up again.

"What is your story?" I question "Why, are you here? A long way from home?"
He take his time to answer me, not looking so sure about sharing.
"Listen Tyra, every person has his problems, his issues he works through, and I have my own, that is what I am doing here, working my issues," he shuts his mouth then, not wanting to share any more with a stranger.

I don't press, instead I pick up the journal and start reading it again.

"Why do you keep looking through that?" he inquired
"You know, my own issues," I shrugs, "I am looking for something I want to share with you," I then adds.

"Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs," I read once I find it.

"Did you come up with that yourself?" He laughed.
"No, William Shakespeare did," I join in with a giggle.

"Listen Harry, It's your life, and I am just here for the ride, so if you smoke, then smoke," I sigh. I can't help but smile when he opens the window and tosses the cigarette grinning a dimpled grin at me.
"Thank you," I acknowledge.
"I'll try not to smoke next to you," He says to me.

We drive in silent, the radio playing some country song, and I am looking out the window, at the changing fields and my mind takes me back to him, the rides we used to take together when I was younger- my feet sticking out the window, the breeze tickling them, making me giggle and wiggle my toes, while he sang along to stupid songs at the top of his lungs. Angry tears filled my eyes, as the emotions overwhelmed me. Why did he leave? Was is that bad for him? And why didn't he take me with.

I notice another diner off the road, and wipe my eyes as I sit up straight.
"Harry, I really need the bathroom again is it ok if we stop there? It will only take a minute," I bat my lashes at him.
"Sure," He exhaled, and I sneak the photo in my pocket, getting ready to run out fast when he comes to a stop.

I rush up to the diner's doors and push them open, the cold air from the air-conditioner hits my face. Only know I notice how hot I was.
I tuck a strand of loose hair behind my ear as I make my way to the counter.

"Hello, I was wondering if you've seen this boy?" I flash the picture at the man, who was frowning down at me.
"I only help customers," He grumbles folding his arms.
"Fair enough, can I have a cola to go please?" I take out some money and drop it on the counter.
The man brings me a bottle, and I show him the photo once more. He takes it from my hand and looks at it carefully. He then hands it back shaking his head. My emotions from before flood back and with them my tears.

"Please? Are you sure?" I beg him to remember, feeling the salty drops fall on my cheeks.
"Sorry kid, not many people stop by here, I would remember," The man said turning away from me.
I take a deep breath and take the bottle with me as I turn to leave the diner. I stride slowly back to the car wiping my eyes and putting a smile on my face.

"I got you this," I hand over the cold bottle to Harry. He was studying my face before taking it while thanking me. Then he opens the glove compartment and hands me over some tissues. I take them from him without a word and dab at my eyes. I stare out the front window trying to calm myself down.

"Do you want to tell me what is going on?" Harry asks me softly. I shake my head and bring my knees to my chest leaning my chin on top.

"Here, drink this, the sugar will do you good," He offers me the bottle. I take it from him and sip. I felt the cold run down my throat and it helped a bit.

"Are you ready to continue?" Harry questioned. I nod my head, and he puts the car into drive.
I knew this won't be easy, but I will not give up! I'll find him! I have to. I vow once more, for the thousandth time that I will succeed. I take out his journal and open it again reading over his list of places he wanted to see, giving myself strength and hope. I have started the journey. I am on my way, I don't know where I will pass through, but I know what awaits me at the end. I take out his picture from my pocket and stick it in between the journal's pages.
I will succeed, I will find him.
