Hide & Seek (Larry Stylinson AU)

Chapter 15

I stare wide-eyed at the boy who not an hour ago, had me weak at the knees. "We run? Where the fuck do you propose we run off to?" He frowns in cordial disapproval at my language. "I don't know, Lou." "You're insane, Harry. I can't run away.......ever." "Why not?" "Because......I have a sister and a father to worry about back home. I have friends and people who will want to know where I am." He stares down at his food, picking at the edges of the box that has been weighed down to the size of a tube in his hand. "I don't have that. I just have you to worry about." "You don't have to worry about me. I'm asking you not to worry about me." "Y-Your family. They're still in Middleston?" He looks up at me through hooded eyes. "Yes." "You have to get them out." "What?" My blood runs cold and all that is in physical contact with me does the same. "Why?" "Psychera's patients are loose and they're extremely cruel. Your family isn't safe in Middleston." "Why the fuck are you telling me this now?" I fumble for my phone on the pedestal while I jump to my feet needing something to do. I don't know whether to call them or not. Dad will disregard everything I say as homesickness. I have to go there. I have to go get them. "I'm going back." I say grabbing my keys off the counter. Harry rises to his feet, and all the light let in from the streetlights are blocked by his massive body. "Where?" He asks, his fingers causing trails in his damp hair. "Middleston, Harry!" I shout just because I can when I slam the door shut behind me. It reopens and I make a disgusted sound as he follows after me, his footsteps heavy and the staircase protesting beneath his mass. "You can't go alone." He says sternly, magically answering my grumbling remark for him to leave me alone. "Those are dangerous people." "You're dangerous." I add drunkenly as I unlock the front car doors and climb in. So does Harry. "But I'm trying not to be." I roll my eyes and know he saw me do it, but keep the threatening boil of anger from erupting. I head into traffic, ignoring all warning and authoritative signage that cautions me to slow down or be charged. My family is in Middleston, and they aren't safe. Harry turns on the radio and I listen carefully to the news. Nothing said about my home town and Harry hums along to the song playing. How can he be so calm? We're driving to his house too. I shove the memories away. I speed up and hear the engine roar back at me in argument. It stops. The engine cuts on its own and we are left idling in the middle of the fucking street at 21h00. "Fuck!" I exclaim. I open the door and get out, needing space away from anything near me. "Calm down. It's just overheated." Harry rationalises. "You're fucked up, Harry, you know that? My family is in that damn town with raving murderous lunatics all headed in that direction-" "They'll be fine. You can't walk there!" He calls when I start strolling off away from him and the stationary car. I grunt and wait for him to offer a suggestion. He revs the car and it starts on his command. I get in stubbornly and take the wheel. "You're welcome." He mutters, staring off out the window into the fields that haunted our trip on either side of this highway. *** If I ever labelled Middleston as a ghost town before, the statement can be marked untrue now. Everywhere is abandoned, shop windows that I'd once visited for the odd grocery are boarded up but torn apart again. Doors swing in the breeze and not a single human sound or cry can be heard. It's like a stampede was passing through, and left destruction in its wake. "They're still here." Harry says rolling down his window. "They wouldn't leave just yet." "Why not? Who's still here?" I question as I pull into my street. The houses are empty, entrances wide open and yards littered with corpses. I try not to recognise their faces. I didn't need visuals of when they were alive and fundraising by selling lemonade. "Stop." Harry says, opening his door and getting out when I haven't even pressed the brake yet. "We have to walk." "Why?" The fucker was delusional. "This car won't survive a trip back with an even heavier load, Louis. There's an SUV in that driveway. I'll get it while you go.......get your family." "Fine." "This place is pretty dead. If you need me just call." "Won't your friends hear me instead?" He smirks as he walks off. "Not if you're calling for me." My home isn't what it was when I left it in the capable hands of our newly employed housekeeper and my family. It's silent, every furnishing is creaking in the wind and every hope of recovery is soiled. I think I hear footsteps of someone overhead but it stops and I leave it as a figment of my over-active imagination. "Phoebe?" I call out to my baby sister. "Dad?" No one answers me and I continue up the stairs. Giggles. I hear childish but soft giggles coming from the guest bedroom, the farthest away from my destination. I ignore it and go on to push open my father's room door. The closet door is open just a peep and a gust of wind from the window increases the space. "Phoebe?" I know my sister loved a good game of hide and seek, she'd find any available nook or cranny to escape to. She had a great stamina and sometimes it took me an hour or more to locate the little rascal. I try to shove down the emotive responses, thinking about the safety of my family. I couldn't lose them. I won't be able to live with myself. I whistle, following the tune I used when I'd surrendered in a family game and Phoebe would know to come out. If she ignored this I'd lose it. I hear shuffling before the closet door opens fully and a small head peeks out from the corner. Blonde hair and blue eyes. I sigh in relief. "Hey, Phoebe. Come here. It's me." I get down on my knees and she runs over to me with frightened arms. I hug her close, face nuzzling her hair and rubbing her back with my hand reassuringly. "It's okay, love. I'm here. Where's Daddy?" She sniffs and sobs, her hands interlocked around my neck and I wait for her to loosen up. "He-He's in there." She points shakingly to the closet. I get up with her on my hip and reach for the door. "Don't. Don't go in there, Louis. Please." She pulls my collar in agitation. "I don't like him." "Isn't he Daddy? He's just Daddy, Phoebe." "No." She shakes her head. "It isn't. Daddy left me here and he found me." Oh fuck. I stare in horror at the blackness peering back at me. Outside the night was swallowing the town. My chest caved in at the realisation that my father was inevitably killed. I hear the engine of a healthy car pull up in front of the house, and turn around to leave. "Come on." I take out my phone. "My friends outside." Thump. Thump. Footsteps I don't recognise, tread after us and I don't slow down needing to get out in the open. "Harry!" I call when I see the SUV from our neighbour's yard but no one in it. "Stop shouting." He appears from around the back of the vehicle. "This is a better one. It should get us back." "Someone's in there." I say whilst putting Phoebe in the back seat. I hurriedly dial Marie's number but it's a dead attempt. So is Niall and Zayn. I panic and call my dad with the remnants of a slivering streak of hope. Nothing. Everyone is dead. "Who's in there?" Harry asks, his hair has dried with the wind and is oddly pathed. "I don't know. Let's go. Harry?" He's staring behind me at whatever it is that's so captured his attention. Jaw rigid and fists clenched, his eyes dark but set on an individual whose outline I see in the tinted window of the SUV. *NARRATOR'S POV* Rupert stands stiffly at the door. He watches the small girl who he'd befriended cower behind a young man who Rupert didn't see but hated already. Harry is there, protectively standing between them. "Go back inside, Rupert." Harry says and the young man spins around to face Rupert. Rupert takes in the resemblances between the girl and the boy. Blue eyes. He had chocolate hair when she was more golden. He was shorter than Harry with smaller biceps but a long abdomen. Short legs that looked like he could outrun nothing, but the muscle that clearly made his jeans tighter was less revolting. Rupert steps down from the porch, wanting to get a closer look and see if the light coming from the moon did justice to his skin. Harry stops him. "Rupert." Harry warns before turning to Louis. "Get in the car. Now." Rupert doesn't step closer, but keeps his hungry eyes on this fantasy-like creature. He was the most beautiful being he's ever seen. The new boy hurries into the car and shuts the door to block off Rupert's sight. Rupert frowns. "Who is that?" Rupert asks Harry quietly. "Is everyone dead?" Harry replies with a question. "He took my friend away. I want to know who he is." "He is mine." Harry growls and Rupert shuts up but doesn't back away. "You will not go near him or her. Understand?" Rupert doesn't nod and Harry turns on his heel to leave. Rupert watches as the car speeds down the street under the driving expertise of Harry. He can't see the boy anymore. Harry forbade him from pursuing the boy. Nobody forbade Rupert. He couldn't have the girl, she was too young. But he would have the boy. He would. *LOUIS' POV* "How is she?" Harry asks from the kitchen when I shuffle into the room after tucking Phoebe into bed. "She's shaken up." I say. "A lot. Won't fall asleep." "Do you want me to....?" I look at him with hostile eyes and his shoulders slump. "I know you still don't think the best of me." "That's no true. You escaping from a mental institution and inevitably releasing the county's worst lunatics all over town, was just the most magnificent decision." He glares at me and I snort. "You know I didn't want that to happen." "Of course you didn't." His fingers press into the counter and he closes his eyes. "I'm sorry." "That doesn't fix fuck all, Harry. Everyone's still dead and my sister's still petrified." "Let me speak to her." He suddenly changes topics. "No." I say removing myself from the kitchen and wishing for warm food. "You've done enough."
