Between the Skies

I was comfortable and ready to sleep when there was an eager rapping at my door. I didn't want to get up, but whoever wasn’t about to give up. They continuously knocked until I pulled myself from my lovely bed and turned the knob.
Behind the door was Niall, sipping on a can of soda, smiling cheerfully at me like always. I wanted to get angry and yell at him because I was tired, but with a face like his, I couldn't muster any anger. Instead, I invited him kindly. He quickly jumped onto my bed and made himself at home, as excepted. I sat on the edge of the bed.
"What's with Zayn?" he asked first.
"He just wanted to talk. It's all been settled," I spoke honestly, "why are you here?"
"We're going another mission! Are you down?"
"Depends on the mission," I instantly thought of a hoard of mutts. I thought they may have gotten onto school grounds or something; maybe they were attacking the normal students. Or perhaps the Crowleys were going on a rampage and beating up the NPC's. They could've been abusing their power like Niall told me they do. Maybe some other wild, mystical, horrifying creature broke into the school. My mind raced and stumbled over my own imagination.
"We're holding a concert," Niall said smoothly. All of the images I had of dogs eating students and the vicious Crowleys faded from my mind.
"That sounds kind of, tame. Is it really a 'mission'?"
"You've never seen one of Casually Existing Battlefront's (our newest band) concerts, so you don't know. We have our own band called Between the Skies. The concert distracts all of the normal students while a giant battle takes place on the football field. The Battlefront and the Crowleys fight until the concert is either over or shut down," he explained.
"What's the point?"
"Well, if we win, we get closer access to God,"
"It seems like pointless bloodshed," I admitted. Niall's smiling, excited face dropped down to a sad expression.
"Yeah, you might be right. We hardly ever win," he sighed. I felt terrible because I had washed away his happiness with my negativity. He looked like a kid that had his toy taken away. I let out a sigh myself.
"I'm in, though," I said with a weak, fake smile. Niall practically jumped out of my bed with a delightful squeal.

That night, I prepared myself for a war. I grabbed my gun and handfuls of ammo. I met up with the others in the office. They were discussing a new name for our group. Louis and Anna fought like brother and sister over what was good and what seemed stupid.
"We could use it as an acronym!" Louis protested as Annaliese took a swing at the back of his head. This is when I walked in.
"It spells butt, Louis!" she yelled, her fist colliding with his head.
"Well, if we can't kill them bullets, we could kill them with laughter," Louis chuckled, ignoring the obvious bump swelling.
"We're not calling our organization butts," Anna sighed, walking towards me, "Rookie!" she called.
I stood tall and proper automatically at her voice.
"Yes ma'am!" I replied. Anna patted me on the back and smiled.
"How are you?"
"I'm okay, you?"
"Decent, I'd be better if some idiot would stop taking our name as a joke," she motioned her head to Louis, "Are you ready to meet the band?"
"There are more of you?!" I proclaimed, shocked and confused. The fact that this group got bigger scared me a bit. There were already seven people packed inside of the office, bickering and fighting constantly. How many more could fit in this dysfunctional family?
"Oh there are plenty of us scattered around this place," Anna smiled kindly, like we were her family and she accepted us all, "You haven't even met half of us,"
"Well, I guess it can't be too bad," I playfully chuckled.
A few moments later, as we all got ready for the battle, a group of people walked into the office door. They came all at once, like a gang, only they carried instruments.
"Hey guys!" our group greeted them almost in unison. I figured they were the band. There was a spunky blonde girl carrying nothing, she was smiling like Niall would. She almost looked like a female version of him, since her hair was so blonde and her eyes so blue. Behind her were two guitarists, one had light purple and blue haired, tied off in a messy bun. Her bangs fell over her face in an "emo" way, giving her a punk-like appearance. The other guitarist had short, dirty blonde hair that was pulled back with a ribbon; her bangs fell on either side of her soft, angelic face. Her eyes were big and gray, showing her wonder and amazement.
Two men stood behind those girls, one carrying a big, red bass, and the other flipping drum sticks. The bassist appeared young, energetic, and immature. His hair was bright red, like Annaliese's. He smiled cockishly, his green eyes snickering at everyone. The drummer appeared more mature; he didn't smile, but looked down at everyone in a fatherly way. His hair was dark brown, covering half of his dark blue eyes. He twirled a drum stick in each hand, like he mastered it or something. He didn't seem cocky, like the bassist, but confident in his talents.
"Rookie, meet Between the Skies," Annaliese greeted me, pointing to each person in order (the other I described them), "That's Jack, the lead singer, her real name is Eloise Rollins, but we call her Jack because she's good at everything. Then you have Chisa Sakurai on lead guitar, May Emanuel on rhythm, Andrew MacKaye playing bass, and Roy Allin beats on the drums. Everyone, this is Harry Styles, our newest member, and back there in Liam Payne, since you haven't met him yet either,"
"It's nice to meet you all," I said quietly, still a bit shy.
Before I could allow them to reply, Eloise, or Jack, jumped on me with her small frame. She clinched my body tight in her arms as she squeezed me.
"He's the cutest thing I've ever seen!" she cried as she hugged me.
"She says that about everyone. She even jumped on Zayn when she first met him," Anna whispered to me.
"I do not!" Jack pulled away, "He's just so adorable, I can't even stand it. These rosy cheeks, his lovely hair, those pretty eyes, oh my lord, I can't help but love him!" he pinched my cheeks and tugged at my curly hair. She spoke to me like a baby, but it was sort of cute, since she was so tiny herself.
"Thank you, I think," I hesitantly muttered.
"And he's British! I love British," she jumped and squealed.
"But not Irish?" Niall called from behind me. Jack got off of me and hugged Niall.
"You know I love you, Niall! I love the Irish, your accent is cute too," she smiled. When they stood next to each other, they could've passed for brother and sister. If Jack's American accent wasn't so thick, I would've mistaken them for family.
After talking to the band for a minute, Annaliese stepped in, and ordered them to get ready for the concert. I learned though, that Andrew was just as immature as he seemed. He liked to play pranks and laughed at everything. Roy was stern, like Zayn, only in a more fatherly way. He looked after everyone liked children; I learned that he was close to Chisa, who was very rebellious. She didn't like people and rejected them, unlike Ayame who felt rejected by other people. Roy kept Chisa in line and made sure that she was nice to everyone. May was kind and smart, like a wise, older sister. She shook my hand and apologized for Jack's behavior. Jack, whose name was Eloise, was sort of a jack of all trades, which is where she got her nickname. Not only was she the lead singer of the school's band, she also worked in the Guild, making weapons, fashioning outfits, and building machines. She also cooked with Ayame, fought with the others, she could use almost any weapon she picked up, she painted, wrote song, poems, and stories. She really did do everything.
Everyone seemed nice, it was a shame they had to leave so early, but I really wanted to see them play. Anna could see how much I wanted to hear them, so she had be keeping watch of the front entrance of the gymnasium, where they would be preforming.
We all took our positions. I stood by the door, while Louis took an observation desk nearby, armed with a sniper. Everyone else was closer to the football field, armed with their arsenal of weapons, ready to attack once Michael or Gabriel showed themselves. Niall told me not to worry because I wouldn't be in the heat of the fight. I was just a look out in case one of the brothers got close to the gym.
I held my gun loosely in my hand as I watched the sea of students pour into the gym. They all talked about the band and how amazing they were. They commented on their well put together songs, their unique sound, and which member was their favorite. I couldn't help but be excited with them. This would be my first concert, at the school at least.
I watched the stage that they were supposed to play on. The dark red, velvet curtain was pulled down. The gym was a loud, noisy place since every student in the school was packed inside. I almost couldn't hear myself think over their chatter.
I eagerly awaited the reveal of the band. I tapped my finger against my pistol, biting my inner cheek, and fidgeting about. I couldn't remember the last time I was so giddy.
The gym erupted into a roar of cheering as the massive crowd cried. The curtain was being pulled, revealing the band as they began to play.
A fast passed, loud, guitar riff began to ignite the already spontaneous energy of the students. Chisa, Andrew, Roy, and May were all visible, but Jack was nowhere to be found. The members on stage played hard and fast. I can't explain the amazing sound that came from their instruments.
Out of nowhere, there was a loud explosion from the middle of the stage and Jack appeared with a microphone clinch in her hand. The moment she appeared, she began to sing.
"Spending time you, who seemed to be in a bad mood. There's one thing that I knew; you pretend to be like that, desperate in your fight," she sang perfectly on pitch. Her voice was rather high, but she had a punk sound, but she didn't sound all over the place. She had a beautiful voice, I can't really explain it. "Please don't ever change that, like ice, even if the summer shine is hot, don't melt," she went on.
I could hear the giant sea of students singing with her, like they were in a trance. The band had them hypnotized. I'll admit I was a bit hypnotized as well. The bright lights of the stage, the hypnotic music, and vocals. How could you not stare off, in a trance? I fell in love with them by the first lyric.
Suddenly there was a noise coming from my earpiece. Someone was trying to contact me. I ignore the band as best as I could and listened in.
"Harry, you have to get ready. Michael's at the field fighting the lot, we have to fight Gabriel. He's coming on your left," Louis announced. I quickly looked to my left. A small, blonde boy was slightly visible far away. He walked slowly and robotically towards me.
I gripped my gun tightly as he inched his way close. I wanted to start firing as soon as I saw him, but I knew my shots would all miss. I had to aim and wait until he got closer. His movements became sudden and quick, like there was a glitch, or he was teleporting closer.
Louis set off a few shots from his sniper, but a light blue dome appeared over Gabriel, shielding him from the bullets.
"You'll have to use close ranged attacks," Louis instructed.
"But I only have a gun!" I cried back to him, hoping he could hear me.
"Improvise!" he ordered.

Before I knew it, Gabriel was standing in front of me. His right arm had turned into a long, steel blade. He quickly swung at me, but I dodged it. He only nicked my shoulder.
I pulled my gun up while he was close to me and began shooting at his face. The blue dome shielded him though. I figured as much, but it was worth a shot. My heart raced with fear. Thankfully, the music drowned out the sound of our fighting. I could hear Jack singing louder, hoping to add some extra volume.
"Bullets won't work, Harry. Hit him!" Louis ordered.
In a fit of panic, I punched Gabriel in the face as he swung his blade towards me again. This time the sword hammered down on my left shoulder, rendering it useless. It felt like he had hacked my entire arm off, it hurt so bad. My punched too affect him, though. A trickle of blood ran down from his nose.
I turned my gun around so I was holding it from the barrel. I began hitting him in the face with the handle, causing only a minimal amount of damage. Soon, he was smart and dodged my attacks.
I was right, he was teleporting. One moment he was in front of me, swinging his hand blade, the next he was behind me, stabbing me directly in the back.
"Harry!" was the last thing I heard. I thought it was Louis at first, but then I realized that the voice was Niall. I caught a vision of him running towards me, shooting at Gabriel before my sight blurred into a black screen. Naturally, I woke up in the hospital the next day.

I had an aching pain coming from my left shoulder and back. It felt as though I shattered my bones. I remembered Gabriel's stabs, putting two and two together; I realized I was in the hospital.
Niall sat next to my bed, his head hung sadly. Then he heard me shift in my bed and he jumped from his seat. I thought he was going to hug me, but he stood still, stopping himself.
We were silent for a moment. I realized that Niall's expression wasn't his usual cheery self. He was upset about something.
"I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have left you alone," he said, taking all of the blame for my injuries.
"No, no, Niall, you're fine. This is Gabriel's fault," I replied, trying to smile for him.
"No, I should've been there to help you fight. It was stupid to let you guard the door by yourself," he continued to beat himself up.
"You don't have control over other people's actions. It's alright, I'm fine," I protested, sitting up to show him I could.
"Yeah, but it must've hurt,"
"Not at all," I lied. He gave me a look, showing that he didn't believe me, "Maybe a prick,"
"You're right, it was pointless bloodshed. We didn't even get any information on God, like always," Niall sighed, sitting back down in his seat. He reached over and began stroking my hair, "I just want you to be already. You mean a lot to me, mate,"
"I'm fine, Niall, quit worrying. I'm alive, right?" I tried making a joke, but he wasn't laughing. Before I knew it, Nialls lips crashed against mine. I was shocked and taken back. I couldn't move, so I froze. My eyes were wide, while his were closed. I wasn't sure what to do; my face was clutched between his hands and lips. They were soft. He tasted like canned coffee and soda, but I sort of liked it. I didn't think that I felt anything towards anyone here, but my heart was beating at a hundred miles an hour. Could it have been out of love or fear?
When he pulled away, I was still stunned and confused. He didn't seem to notice. Niall just stroked my cheek with his thumb, whispering “I'm sorry" before leaving me alone in the hospital.

Notes

The lyrics I used for Between the Skies's song is actually "Thousand Enemies" by Girls Dead Monster.
