The Guild

My first night was restless, though the bed was unbelievably comfortable. It was made out of some material that caressed every curve of my body perfectly. When I first lay down, it felt as if I was being sucked in by the world's softest cloud. My mind wouldn't let me sleep, though. So, I was up for hours trying to wrap my head around all the impossibilities that Annaliese told me the day before. Accepting the fact that I had died, probably in a tragic way, was far from my grasp. The fact that I was going to school with two-thousand or more kids, who weren't in anyway real, seemed unrealistic. But, my logic didn't make up for the fact that I found myself lying on the cement for hours, with no memories or recollection of anything before today.
After laying in bed for a few hours, I decided to bounce up, and go get something to drink. The sun was about to rise and I felt like watching it with some iced tea. As I travelled down the unusally long hallway, I stopped for a moment. I had to look paralyzed or stunned, thats how I felt at least. I stood completely still as my mind raced at a hundred miles an hour. It was so spontanious and strange. I didn't know what to make of it. In my confusion, I just let it happen. Maybe I was having a stroke.
"Harry," I whispered to myself. I repeated it a thousand times until it became crystal clear. That was my name, Harry Styles. Even after I realized it, I repeated it, just out of joy. I had to hide my enthusiasm though. I didn't want to wake anyone else in the dorms. So, instead, I just stored the bit of info and carried on.
Down the hall, in the boy's common room, there were a series of vending machines that held anything you wanted. Unfortunately, they needed money. I didn't have any.
I stood infront of one of the machines for a minute or two before realizing it. It took a card, that I didn't have. So, I stood there scratching my head for a moment, before I saw Zayn walking down the hallway.
He stood next to me, in front of this coffee dispencer, wearing nothing but a pair of loose pajama pants. His hair had been tossed around due to sleep, his eyes were half closed, and his movements were slow. He held a blue card in his hand, at first I thought it was a credit card.
He slipped card into the machine's slot, pressed a button, and recieved his cup of coffee. As he took a sip, he glanced over at me. I quickly diverted my eyes, worried that I may seem strange. We still didn't know eachother well, I didn't even know myself too well. I was practically a strange to him.

"You shouldn't be walking around this early," he warned in a harsh, husky voice. His words even sound exhausted.
"Why?" I asked worried.
"The Crowleys walk around and beat kids if they're out of their beds at night. Technically, its night,"
"The Crowleys?" I asked, but he didn't answer.
"Did you want something?" he replied, instantly changing the subject.
"Oh, yeah, I wanted some tea, but I don't have a card thing,"
"You'll get one later today at lunch. Here, just this once," he said as he slipped his card into the machine I stood by.
"No, I couldn't possibly take from you," I objected, but he already pressed the button for iced tea.
A can of lemonade iced tea fell into the dispencer, mine for the taking. "Thank you," I said, but he had already walked away with his cup of coffee.

I returned to my room, pulling up the chair from my desk to watch the sunrise. I cracked the can open and began to sip. The day ahead of me was suppose to be an "adventure", as Niall described it. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I had an idea. I figured, as a group of high school kids, we'd just skip class and go into town. Was there a town around here?
Niall told me to expect the unexpected and to be prepared. He didn't tell me what to be prepared for though, so I was left confused. I was suppose to report to the Principal's Office and go somewhere called "the Guild" . Annaliese called this "Mission: the Guild". I took it as a fancy name for a skip day and didn't worry about.
As the day progressed, I relaxed. Niall lead me to the office, since I wasn't sure how the halls worked yet. No one provided me a map, so I was left clueless.
I followed close behind Niall, trying to memorize the turns and landmarks. Eventually I gave up. The building we were in was too big to remember in a day. It had to stretch to the size of it's own town.
"Are you excited?" Niall suddenly asked. Our walk was rather quiet, so I was happy he began a conversation.
"Should I be?" I asked curiously. He let out a soft chuckle.
"Of course! It's your first mission," he turned back and smiled at me, "then you can be a member and sign the contract, well, once you remember your name,"
"I did remember!" I shouted happily, I almost forgot that I remembered my name.
"You did?!" Niall stopped in the middle of the empty hallway and turned to me. His arms were suddenly around me and he was lifting me into the air. "I'm so happy for you!" I wasn't sure how to reply so I just smiled.
"Whats your name?" he asked like we had just met.
"It's Harry, Harry Styles," I said with confidence and accomplishment. It was such a small detail in my life, but at the same time it was my entire identity. It was simple and so important. I was happy to have a name to my face, though I still wasn't sure what I looked like. Niall always complimented me and told me I was "handsome". I had to assume that I was pleasent to look at.
Niall set me down and extended his hand, "It's nice to meet you, Harry Styles," he said, like we were stranger.
I shook his hand with a bright smile on my face and replied, "It's nice to meet you too, Niall James Horan,"
Niall and I had an exchange of laughter before carry on with our way. We stopped at the office door. Before he could preform the secret "door opening ritual", I stopped him to ask him something.
"Hey, Niall. If you guy occupy the principal's office, then where's the principal?"
"Well, technically there is no principal. God sort of controls this world, so he controls it. He controls the school," he answered.
"So, God punishes the students when they're skipping class or late too many times?"
"No. The Crowleys do that," he said. There were those names again.
"Yeah, Zayn mentioned them. Who are they?" I asked. Niall sighed, stepping away from the door so we wouldn't disturb the group with our conversation.
"The Crowleys are two brothers, who run the school with an iron fist, more like a sword and whip. Michael is the Student Body President, while his younger brother Gabriel his Vice President. They were placed there by God and has probably been here as long as he as. They're nasty, little pricks. They love to pick fights with us. Don't get on their bad side, or try to avoid them whenever you can," Niall explained. I turned my head slightly, buzzing with more questions that I chose to save for later.
I never took the whole "God" thing seriously, but the fact that the Crowleys had the names of two Arch Angels made me question this world even more. Could it all be real? Were we really in some limbo-like world ran by an all might God? There were two Arch Angels, posing at teenagers in a high school, to disepline fake students in a fake reality. The entire thing seemed unfathemable, so I had to push it as far back as my mind would allow me. I forced myself to believe that the names were a coinencidence and to ignore the "God" thing.
Once I was inside the office, everything became more weird. The members were either cleaning, loading, or assembling different weapons. To the right, Louis was showing Liam how to reload some kind of hand gun in seconds. In her little corner, tiny, shy Ayame was cleaning a long katana, then inspected the blade. Behind her desk, Annaliese inspected her own handgun, checking the sight, and then stored it in a holder attatched to her thigh. Everyone looked like they were preparing for war.
I was taken back and prepared to run, but I held my composure. I slowly followed Niall into the room and shut the door behind me, not to alarm any of the NPC's.

"Rookie!" Annaliese called from her desk. I popped my head up. She tossed a small, black, loaded pistol in my direction. I threw my hands up, ready to catch it. When it landed in my hands, it fumbled a bit, but I eventually got a good grip on it.
"What am I suppose to do with this?" I asked in a shrill, scared voice. I heard Zayn snicker a bit behind me, but I didn't acknowledge it.
"You're suppose to shoot it," Annaliese snapped.
"Why?" I asked in a higher voice. My image of a fun day, skipping class, and going town was demolished.
"We're going to the Guild. We could run into anything, so you need to be prepared," she answered as kindly as she manage, but under her sweet voice, I could detect her sighs.
"What am I preparing myself for?" I wasn't prepared at all.
"Expect the unexpected," Niall reminded me, with his signiture wink, "Don't worry, Harry. I'll keep an eye on you,"
"Did you just call him something?" Annaliese popped. The room fell silent. Every quit checking their weapons to hear the news.
Niall wrapped one arm around me, smiling wide, "Tell 'em Harry," he instructed.
"My name is Harry," I announced. I could feel everyone smile, applauding me for figuring it out.
"Good job, Rookie," Annaliese praised me. It felt nice. She would continue to call me Rookie, though. I suppose it was my nickname.

After everyone was loaded and prepared, we left school. Niall gave me a few pointers on how to shoot aim a gun and shoot as we snuck out of the building. Though he showed me what to do, I still wasn't sure how to use a gun. I was nervous and worried that I would hurt someone. Then everyone began running and I had to catch up. Next to me was Niall, trying to slow himself down to my pace. It was obvious that it was difficult to keep himself at the lazy jog that I was doing. In front of me was Ayame, she had a good sprint on her. She was quick on her feet and soon jolted herself in front of everyone, leading the way.
Our destination was a sea of trees just outside the school grounds. Around the entrence of the forest was a broken, rusted fence that stretched for miles. Every few feets there was a bright yellow caution sign that read "Danger: Death Ahead, Do Not Enter". I took it as a strict warning, but the others didn't. They ducked under the broken fencing without even glancing at the sign.
Though I hesitated, I had to follow them or else I'd be left behind. We went on into the dense forest.
Anna told us to keep our weapons close. Ayame pulled her sword out of it's casing. A sharp "shing" rang through the silence as she held the blade close to her.
On and on, we walked. About half an hour had passed, but my legs already ached like I had ran for hours. I wanted to stop and rest, but everyone seemed headstrong to keep going. Niall stayed behind with me, but pushed me to stay close to the group. They were in sight at least.

"Where are we going?" I asked him.
"The Guild," he answered, like he had dozen of times.
"I know, but where is it?"
"Deeper in. It's pretty far, I'm sorry,"
"Don't apologize. You did say to expect the unexpected," I slightly chucked.
Suddently, Ayame "shh'd" us. Everything went dead silent. Then there was the cracking of dead leaves and sticks. It became louder and quicker as we waited for it.
Behind a few trees came a gigantic dog-like creature. It looked like a bulldog, drooling, and growling at us, only it was the size of a fully grown man, if the man were standing. The dog looked like it was on steriods. It had muscles buldging out of it's limbs, a heaving chest, and long, sharp teeth that stuck out of its mouth. It's paws were the size of boulders, it's claws looked like butchers knives.
Everyone got their weapons ready, but Ayame had already attacked by the time they placed their fingers on their triggers. In one quick movement, she struck the mutt in it's chest. It fell with a loud thud, like someone had dropped a bomb on a quiet town. The noise attracted more of it's kind.
The silent forest errupted into warzone. The "shing" of Ayame's sword rang through the tree, along with everyone's gunfire, and battle cries. I hesitated to shoot, but eventually I did. I was sure that I didn't hit anything.
Ayame took most of the mutts down with her katana. Once they were dead, she took out a small cloth and cleaned the blood off of it. There was a pile of dead, mutant dogs around her.
"Wow Ayame, I didn't know you could fight like that," I complimented her. She turned around and looked at me like a scared rabit that had been spotted by a preditor. Did I offend her? She didn't reply to me.
"Hey, Ayame. This is where we found you, isn't it?" Zayn asked her. She didn't respond to him either, but she atleast smiled kindly, closing her eyes, indictated some happiness.

The group moved on, deeper and deeper into the forest. I couldn't help but think of the monsters we just faught. Niall explained to me that they were basically mutated dogs. In the forest, there were many different, unique creatures. The called them "Experiments" because they weren't known animals of the living world. They seemed like things that God would throw together in his spare time, just for fun. The mutts were just the beginning.
I thought of unicorns, dragons, and other mythical creatures. Could they be real? In a world like this, I believed it.
We ran into a few more mutts along the way, but the group quickly took them down. I felt a bit useless since I couldn't shoot anything. I tried, but I only hit the trunks of trees or the ground. My aim was way off. I needed more practice.

We approached a river bank around an hour and a half of walking through nothing but forest. The sound of the water rushing down the stream was refreshing. It was nicer than gunfire, silence, or snarling mutts. I wanted to dip my feet into the water and swim, but we had to move forward with no distractions.
Annaliese went to the edge of the river and pulled out a large chain that was attached to the group. She opened a huge, cellar-like door, exposing a hole that could've gone to the center of the Earth. The darkness of the hole went on for miles. It was the entrence to the Guild.
"Girls first. We don't want any pervs looking up our skirts!" Annaliese called. Ayame quickly rushed over and began the decend down the hole. "Get ready, Rookie. This is where it gets hard," she winked at me and then began to trip down too.
Niall and I were the last to go, he went after me to shut the door. Once he did, the entire entrence to the Guild went pitch black. Thanks to muscle memory, I was able to go down without a problem, but the ladder basically went to the center of the Earth. I couldn't scaled a skyscraper by the time we reached the bottem. Once our feet touched the solid, concrete floor of the Guild, everyone attached flashlights to their guns and pressed on. My body ached from all of the physical movement but I didn't want to whine or complain. Besides, Niall stayed with me the whole time. He was nice to talk to as I sluggishly followed the group.
"Wanna hear a story?" he asked, seeing that I was bored. The Guild didn't appear special at first. It was just a long, concrete tunnel of darkness and cold. It went on and on with nothingness.
"Sure," I replied in a tired voice.
"Ayame woke up down here," Niall said. The group was far ahead of us, so they wouldn't be able to hear us, but I felt bad about listening to Ayame's story without her concent, "When Anna and I found her in the woods, she told us that this is where she appeared. How terrifying that had to be, right? It's like walking around in absolute darkness down here. There's no light whatsoever. Even if you open the door, the sunlight doesn't reach the bottem," he explained.
"I feel bad. Was she down here long?"
"Yeah. She didn't really have a source of time because its the Guild, but it had to be weeks," as he told me this, I thought of quiet Ayame. Maybe she was so shy because she was alone for long. She had to be confused and scared. What do you do when you're walking around, no where to go, in complete darkness for weeks? She had no one to talk to, no answers, and no nessassary resources. I couldn't imagine it. It sort of hurt me to think of her, all scared and alone down here.
The tunnel went on forever. As we walked, I tried to think of how it wound be to walk the entire way alone, without the light, or any of the knowledge I had of this world. It had to seem like Hell for her.
"Trap one approaching!" Annaliese called, snapping me out of my though.
"Trap?" I questioned.
"We set traps down here so Michael and Gabriel can't find the Guild. We know how to deactivate them. Each member made one of the traps, so only that member knows how to get around it," Niall explained.
The first trap were swinging pendulums. Four giant pendulums swung back and forth, one faster than the last. It appeared simple to cross, but of course it had to be complicated.
Annaliese deminstrated how to get pass them, flawlessly. You had to time each swing perfectly because there was such a slim margine for error. If you missed it by a second, you'd get hit by a massive blade. Everyone got passed it without a scratch, even I did it. It took me a while to build up the courage to get through it though. Niall had to coach me.
Each trap was more difficult and complex than the last. Trap two was Niall's trap. It locked you in an elevador sized room, with lazer beams. You had to contort and move your body in strange possitions in order to get pass them. The beams were so sharp that they could burn a single hair that was out of place. Liam ended up with a burn on his face in the end because his head jerked the wrong way. Niall quickly put in the code to unlock the door and shut off the beams. Louis took care of Liam's face.
"It'll heal soon," Louis reassured him. I doubted it, though. The burn looked deep and nasty. It scretched across his whole left cheek.
I was wrong though, by the third trap it was gone. It amazed me.
The third trap was Louis's. The floor broke apart underneath your feet if you didn't step on it correctly. You had to tip-toe over the planks of wood persicely or else you'd fall. I walked behind Niall, who hit it wrong, and began to fall. I quickly grabbed his arm as he fell and pulled his back up.
"Thanks, mate," he said, "last time I fell it was nasty. Louis added spikes,"
"Spikes? How do you know?" I asked. The fall alone would've killed him, so the thought of there being spikes at the bottem that he could survive through boggled my mind.
"No one dies here, Harry," he reminded me. I still couldn't believe him. But then I witnessed a death for myself.
The fourth trap was Ayame's trap. You had to step on the floor the right way, like the other one, only in this one, if you took a wrong step, a small blade would fly out of the wall, and stab you. As danced around the room, trying to match Ayame's steps, Louis tripped, and he was stabbed in the face by multiple knives. I expected Liam or someone to cry out, but they all just looked at sigh.
"Bloody idiot," Liam sighed, leaving Louis's body alone.
Ayame disabled the trap and be proceeded to the end.
Whatever I believed the Guild to be, I was wrong. It was gigantic factory, with hundreds of workers, machines, and weapons. It had anything that you could need, in one room. The room was the size of the Academy, but deep underground.
"Welcome to the Guild, Rookie!" Annaliese shouted, "You made it. Pick your outfit and weapon. You've earned it," she ordered.
Following her orders, Niall took me around the Guild to it's artilerary. There were so many guns, knives, swords, and other weapons that I didn't know what to choose.
"I'm not really the violent type," I admitted to Niall. He patted me on the back and laughed.
"Neither is Liam, but he has a gun. Just pick whatever feels right,"
Nothing felt right, so I just grabbed whatever gun looked powerful and convient. It was a small, black handgun that fit well in my hand. I still wasn't sure how to use it, but Niall told me he would teach me.
Next I had to pick a uniform. Annaliese told me that the standard uniform showed conformity, so I had to pick something else. There were dozens of outfits to pick from. That's when I noticed that everyone wore a different uniform. Anna's was red, with a short skirt, and a big red bow. Zayn's was an all black suit with a white outline. Liam's was a grayish blue with a blue tie and dark pants. Niall's was a bright blue blazer with a tan vest underneither, and a black tie; the pants were a blue plaid print. It fit him very nicely. Ayame's was black, like Zayn's. It sort of matched, only her's was a girl's uniform.
I ended up grabbing a baige colored uniform. The jacket was a light tan color with red buttons, a red tie, and outline. The pants were an army green color. I threw it on after the group had thrown my old uniform into a fire.
"Welcome to the Kind of Dead Battlefront!" Annaliese cried happily, patting me on the back. Niall hugged me tightly while everyone (besides Louis) cheered and clapped. I was finally one of them.
