Pandemonium

April 5th
Shay

At first my brother and I stayed locked in the house not sure of what to do, waiting for someone to shed some light on this absurd situation. But as the days past we knew we couldn't stay in the house any longer. For one, we were running out of food, and two the kids out side were going crazy, dividing into groups, turning into gangs and inflicting chaos all around. We had to leave.
We each had a bag on our backs with food, water and a change of clothes. We had our phones and chargers with us since the power in the city was still up leaving all electronics working.
"Are you sure we can't stay here a while longer?" I ask Harry.
"Shay! We've been through this, I don't think it is safe, and soon we will have to leave since we have almost no food left. We have to find out what is happening"
I exhale and nod. Harry takes my hand in his and unlocks the door. We step out to the sun and have a look around. The street is empty. Harry had the keys to our mum's car. We hoped the car would still work after such a few days standing outside and not being used. Thankfully it did, and I got into the seat next to Harry buckling myself up. Harry locks the doors and maneuvers the car out of parking. The fact the car was even still outside the house and undamaged by the gangs was a miracle in itself.
As we drive towards the entrance of town I am looking out the window. The town is a mess, cars crashed all around. Harry was driving slowly jockeying the car around the wrecks.
"What are you thinking about?" He asks me
"I.. I am trying to convince myself we are doing the right thing by leaving" I say quietly, scared he'll be cross with me since we've been through this a dozen times. There was no point staying in the town, we should get out, see what is going on outside.
"You scared" He notes, instead of scolding at me.
"I am.. I am terrified" I turn to look at him. Harry reaches his hand over looking for mine. I clench his hand and hold on to it, absorbing comfort and courage from him.
I gaze at his profile. We look like siblings, but no one believes us when we tell them we are twins. We have matching smiles- with dimples showing at the sides of our mouths with every facial expression, we have the same big green eyes and dark hair, but where Harry's is curly, mine is straight. He is also much taller than I am, shooting up when we reached the age of 16, leaving me a few feet below his head.
"Harry- stop! It's Ash!" I exclaim as we pass a figure walking on the side of the road, face to the earth, nothing but his shirt on his back.
Harry stops and drives back in reverse.
"Ashton" I call out the window. The boy looks up at us, the right side of his face bruised and swollen.
"Gosh! Harry unlock the doors! Ash what happened? Get in" I gasp and say when I get a look of his face.
"I got mugged the shit heads" He says closing the door after him.
"What do you mean?" Harry asked "Where are you headed?"
"I was going to my dad's- my sister was staying with him.. though these kids jumped me from nowhere, they took my bag and everything" He was leaning in between the two front seats as he spoke. I angled my body towards him.
"Did they do that to your face?" I asked appalled by the behavior of these people.
"No Shay, he did that to himself" Harry scoffed me.
"Where are you guys heading to?" Ashton asked changing the subject.
"Out of town.. We want to check what is going on at the town one over" Harry replied.
"It's crazy, it's as if all the grownups despaired" Ashton said peeking out the front window.
"It's not as if- it's just that- only kids are around, there is no one above 20 at least that is the way it seems" Harry said
"This is mad! What about all the little kids? The ones who can't fend for themselves- who will take care of them?" I ask
"You shouldn't worry about that now Shay" Harry tells me
"If not me then who? This is absolutely mad! How does something like this even happen?"
"We are going to find that out" Harry assured me.
"Well my sister is at my dad's house at Burberry town right off route 9.. If you want you can stay with us, see what is going on there" Ashton suggest.
"Well, you did want to go to the next town over.. so.." I say to Harry.
"All right then Burberry it is then"
The highway is not as damaged like the roads in the town, and it is easier to drive through.
I started feeling more relaxed, having Ashton with us and talking about different things that have nothing to do with the disappearance of all the grownups. I had my feet sticking out the window as Ashton made us laugh with the imitations of our fellow classmates.
I wondered why we haven’t thought of reaching out to any of our other friends once we understood something was going on.

Ashton

I was so relieved when I heard someone calling my name, as I walked the road outside the town. Finally someone I know, looking up into Shay's friendly face. I was good friends with Harry, being on the football team with him, which made me friends with Shay too, her being his twin. They did everything together, well almost, since Shay did not play football. Everyone knew of the Styles twins. They are the type of kids everyone wanted to be friends with, parents wanted their kids to be friends with, teachers wanted their students to be like them.. It was weird if you thought about it.. Since you would hate them for being so perfect, but for some reason no one did.. They were always nice, always smiling and people were drawn to them.
My jaw was hurting me form the fight with those shit twats. I leaned back in the seat and looked out the window, all three of us growing quieter as we near the town. Shay pulled her feet back in and sat up straighter. I was cradling the water she gave me when I got into the car. I used to have the biggest crush on her last year, though when I understood nothing will come of it I grew out of it and we were able to go back to being just friends.
"Take a right" I tell Harry when we enter the town. I hear the gasp escape Shay's lips as we drove down the road. If we thought our home town was bad, this was so much worse. The street lights were broken and the trees were burned down to the ground, windows were smashed and some doors were ripped open. Dread filled my lungs thinking of my sister all alone in our dad's house. I should have come sooner.
I couldn't even call to make sure if she is all right since her phone was off.
Once Harry parks outside the house I run up to the front door and bang on it calling my sister's name.
"Danielle! Dani open up it's me" I call. Shay and Harry walk up behind me. Shay was hugging her arms while Harry pushed his into his pockets.
Finally I hear a shuffle behind the door and the lock turns.
"Ash" My sister throws herself at me, tears emerge from the corner of her eyes as she starts sobbing into my chest.
"It's all right- I'm here" I say over and over again as I stroke her hair.
"I think we should step inside" Harry says looking sideways at the despicable streets. I walk Dani into the house while the other two followed. The shads were down and the house dark with only a few candles crackling spreading a dim light.
"Don't you have any electricity?" Shay looks around the room.
"No" Dani wiped at her cheeks "The kids here went crazy and I think they did something to the main panels of the town since it went out two days ago, never going back on"
"We can't stay here, it's worse than home" Shay pleads with Harry. Though I can see Harry has a different idea in his head. I can tell, the way his jaw is set that he will not be going back.

Harry

I know why Shay doesn't want to stay here. Since we were young she was scared of the dark, and being here without any light is terrifying for her. But I will not be going back. I can't. We need to find out what is going on.
"We'll stay the night, and then tomorrow we'll leave" I tell them.
"Back home?" Shay asks, her eyes full of hope.
"Shay.. We can't go back, there is nothing to go back to, we need to find out what is going on, we should go to the border, see what is up in the other countries" I say. I watch as the hope leaves her face and fear catches its place. I feel bad but it's the best idea we have.
"Can we go with them?" Dani asks Ashton. Danielle is only a year younger than us, but she'll forever be to me Ashton's little sister.
"If they'll have us" Ashton answers looking at me.
"Of course! Don't be silly, we are better off together then apart" Shay answers.
"Dani, let's go pack a bag for you and Ash" Shay says and they both walk up the stairs and out of sight.
"What do you think?" I ask Ashton, sitting down on a kitchen chair. I was tired, the long driving hurting my neck and I just wanted to go to sleep.
"I don't know what to think.. This is mad- just like Shay said.. maybe crossing the border is really the best thing for us right now" Ash sits down on the table, resting his chin on his palm.
"I'll tell you the truth.. I'm scared… If this is what is happening here, and all the kids are going mad, what is happening then in other cities? And we are traveling with two girls.." Ashton didn't need to finish his sentence. I understood what he was saying.
"We'll keep them safe, no one will touch them" I assure him. He nods once, and we sit quietly until our sisters are back.
"We should eat something" Shay says touching the back of my chair.
"Yeah, we should.. and then we should go to sleep.. so we could get an early start tomorrow" I agree with her.
After supper, if we can call tuna and corn supper, I was in the bathroom, rushing my face. I take my time, running my plan over again and again in my head. It is the best thing really..
As I walk out there is a loud crash, followed by a scream. I don't know who it was Shay or Dani, but I run down the stairs to find out what was going on.
There is glass all over the sofa, the window shattered. Someone was smart enough to blow out the candles to eliminate any light that might be seen by the people outside.
Shay was standing with her hands over her mouth as if she was suppressing a scream, and Dani was standing behind Ashton her forehead buried in his back as if hiding. Ashton turns to me, a finger up to his mouth telling me to be quiet. There are people right outside the window.
"We know you are in there… Come out and play" We hear a voice call to us. A beam of light shines into the room through the window and hits Shay in the face making her blink. Whistles follow then, and an evil laugh. I run and get hold of her hand pulling her after me, Ashton following with Danielle at his side, and I prey, I prey we are able to get out of here without anyone getting hurt.
"The is a back door" Dani says, and we pace swiftly over to where it was. Ashton yanks it open and we flee out. I hear footsteps hit the pavement, knowing they are coming for us.
I push my feet to run faster, following Ashton and Danielle across the back garden and into the back alleyway.
When we finally feel we are not being followed anymore we stop. I bend over, leaning my hands on my knees to catch my breath. I can hear Ashton and Dani breathing heavily too.
"Harry.. Where is Shay?" Dani spits out in between breaths. I shoot to my full height looking sideways and in back of me. Shay is nowhere to be seen
