My Favorite Date

Chapter Twenty

I had made my way down to the lobby of my apartment complex and saw Liam nervously pacing in front of the window. He was dressed in his normal Liam apparel, a hat, jeans, a t-shirt, and his favorite leather jacket. He did look like he hadn’t shaved however in a while and he just seemed tired in his pacing which made me frown and worry. When I got closer I decided to make myself known.

“You know if you pace like that you’ll make a hole in the floor and I’ll have to pay for the repair,” I said quietly trying to make a small joke but I’m pretty sure Liam jumped ten feet in the air instead, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“No, no, it’s fine,” he said quickly, “I was just hoping you wouldn’t stand me up.”

“I wouldn’t do that to you Liam,” I said, “So where do you want to go?”

“Follow me,” he said as he offered his hand and I shook my head no.

Liam frowned at my response but nodded his head and I followed him to his car. Liam opened both the apartment building door and his car door for me and I thanked him quietly and he quickly got to his side of the car. The drive to wherever we were going was quite awkward between the two of us. No one was speaking and the only sounds were from the radio that was on. I was looking out the window because I couldn’t face looking at him. We pulled up to a park that before the wedding, we visited often to walk Ace and Loki around.

“I know it’s cold outside and if you don’t want to be here we can go somewhere else I just thought that you’d might like to visit the park without the dogs,” Liam said, “Plus I planned on buying coffee for the both of us.”

I just nodded my head and I got out of the car not really wanting to say too much because I could feel a lump already starting to form. Liam quickly got out and headed to the coffee cart that was a few yards away from the car while I went to go find a bench while I waited for Liam. I didn’t know that I was watching Liam as he waited for our coffees when an older woman came up to me and made herself known.

“How long have you two been together?” she asked taking a seat next to me.

“Oh we. . .” I said looking at her quickly and then between her and Liam.

“Not together?” the older woman said smiling, “I’ve heard that before.”

“You have?” I asked and she just smiled lightly at me.

“My husband and I started out like that,” she smiled at the memory in some far distance that I couldn’t see, “My husband was my best friend that I begged to pretend to be my date for a family function. We ended up in a huge fight after that.”

I wasn’t going to ask how this woman knew this about Liam and I because in all honesty the older the person the wiser they become. I was just hoping that maybe she could help me make a decision in what would happen between me and Liam.

“But you guys obviously worked it out,” I said hoping they did, “Because you two got married.”

“We did deary,” she smiled lightly at me, “After he made me listen to him. I was so stubborn. He left a couple of days before the wedding happened and I couldn’t bear to look at him let alone listen to him for weeks after that but he sure made me listen and I thank him for it every day.”

“Did he explain. . .” I started.

“That he ran because he was scared yes he did,” she smiled at me, “He did and I felt horrible for not seeing the signs. I don’t know what you and your friend are fighting about over there but give the lad a chance. I can imagine he’s screwed up big time and he wants to make it right. Let him tell you why he screwed up and let him fix it. Because I know if you didn’t care at all you wouldn’t be here right now.”

“Thanks Miss,” I said looking to see that Liam was staring over at me, “I think I will.”

“Any time deary,” she said, “Good luck.”

Liam then came over to us and I thanked him as he handed me my drink.

“I got just like you like it,” he said, “Cream and sugar already added and stirred.”

“Thanks,” I said and stood up.

I then looked over at the older woman I was talking to and gave her a small smile.

“Thanks for the advice Miss,” I said, “It’s really helped.”

The woman just gave me a knowing smile and winked at me. I don’t know why but that woman reminded me a lot of what I wanted to be in the future and for some reason I think if I ever meet her again I owe her a big thank you.

“Who was that?” Liam asked as we started walking.

“A woman who gave me some really good advice,” I said smiling lightly at him.

“Well let me start explaining,” Liam said as we found another bench deeper in the park and took a seat, “Mel I am so sorry for leaving like that. It was unprofessional and not fair to you at all. It’s just. . .”

“It’s just what?” I asked looking at Liam concerned because Liam never had trouble forming words or sentences.

“That I didn’t want to ruin what we had,” he said, “I was so comfortable with what we had going and then we slept together and after that I realized that I loved you and I didn’t want to screw it up because I tend to do that all the time. . .”

Liam continued rambling about how he knew I never felt like that and he just didn’t want to get hurt. However all I heard was that Liam loved me. Liam loved me like I loved him. He was definitely interested and it wasn’t just me. I slowly started smiling and I looked up at Liam to see him looking out at the park talking a mile a minute and looking nervous as hell.

“Liam,” I whispered, “Liam.”

Liam then stopped midsentence and looked at me confused since I was smiling widely.

“Shut up and kiss me,” I said and Liam just smiled at me and pulled me in for one of the most passionate kisses I had ever shared with him.

“So I take that as forgiving me,” he whispered as we rested our foreheads against each other.

“It’s a start,” I whispered smiling.

“Well just know that I quit my job,” he said, “And I found another job for Syco. I start on Monday.”

I just smiled wider and pulled Liam in for another kiss and I felt Liam smile into the kiss as well.

“You know my girlfriend is a pretty good kisser,” he said.

“Girlfriend?” I asked shocked.

“Yes,” Liam said standing up and dropping down to one knee, “Now I know this isn’t a wedding proposal but I would be ecstatic and forever in your debt if you did me the honor of being my last date and first solid girlfriend in years Melanie Walters. Please say yes.”

Liam then pulled out of his pocket a small velvet box and handed it to me as I opened it to a necklace that had and heart and engraved on it, the words: You have my heart. Please don’t break it. I looked up with tears pricking my eyes and a giant smile on my face to see Liam smiling lovingly at me.

“I would be honored,” I said and he just grinned widely and pulled me up off the park bench and pulled me in for another kiss and spun me around in a giant hug.

Apparently we had an audience because I heard people clapping and whistling and I looked up to see my family and friends and Liam’s friends and family and Liam just grinned widely and put the necklace on me.

“I had all of this planned,” he said answering my unasked question, “Because I was praying that you would give me a second chance to show you that I really do love you Mel.”

“Well you better not screw up Payne,” I said smiling at him, “Because I don’t do third chances.”
