Transatlanticism
Chapter III.
But he wasn’t there.
“Broke Sanders?” I was pulled roughly back into reality by a deep but soothing voice coming from the man standing in front of us.
“Yes, hello.” I smiled and pointed towards Hayden “This is Hayden Rouge, my best friend. She will be staying with me.”
“Hello, I’m Mark.” The man told us as he shook our hands and took our luggage “I’m here to drive you to your flat.” He smiled and I wondered if he’d be driving me around London from now on. As we entered the black vintage car, I couldn’t help but notice how used to all of this I’ve got. It wasn’t right – yesterday I was as poor as a mouse and today, I’m wealthy. Really wealthy. I felt as if I had violated my own rule about letting my father be a part of my life again. I felt as if I had let myself and Hayden down, but she assured me everyone deserved a second chance.
And a third one.
I sighed heavily, my phone in my hand as I felt it buzzing. It was my father.
“Broke, have you landed?” he asked and I looked towards Hayden.
“Yes, father. We have. We’ve met Mark at the airport and he is taking us to our flat.” I nodded as if I could be seen.
“I like the way you get all sophisticated and professional occasionally.” He chuckled and I rolled my eyes.
“Well, I’m here for work anyway.” I responded knowing what my father liked to hear.
“You’re a good girl, Broke.” He said as I rolled my eyes again.
“Yeah. I have to go.” I was ready to hang up.
“It’s understandable. I’ll see you at the party today.” He added and hung up.
When we arrived to our flat I figured what the word massive meant – our apartment was enormous and I wasn’t blowing it out of proportion. It consisted of 3 bedrooms, each equipped with a king sized bed and a big wardrobe, a work desk and a beautiful balcony with a spectacular overlook of the city. It was in the centre of London and I loved everything about it. Our living room was the biggest room in the house and it was connected with the kitchen in a very modern way, our furniture modern but tasteful. There was a big balcony as well. We had 2 bathrooms and a walk – in closet. I could get used to this – I really could.
Hayden and I dropped our bags and went to take a quick shower, each in one of the bathrooms. My father held one of his charity parties tonight and we were invited, so as the crème of London. We decided we had to do some shopping. It was necessary.
