It was around two in the morning when the loud shrills of the bells begun to ring. Liam allowed a groan to fall from his mouth, but he hopped up instantly and made his way to where their outfits were. He slipped it on quickly as an address was being repeated over and over throughout the fire department. He ran a hand over his face as he slowly comprehended the street.

Then, he froze, and his eyes went wide as he stopped in mid step and stared at the wall across from him. It was her address, and he felt his heart burst. She couldn’t be living there still. Could she? Ever since the breakup, he could never get her out of her head. Her beautiful melodic laughter would ring through his head one minute, and then her heartbreaking sobs would follow the next.

“Liam!” his lieutenant snapped at him, and he was off to the truck. He climbed into the driver’s seat and started the truck easily. He could feel his heart beat a million miles a minute, and his breathing was getting harsh. He could feel sweat bead up on his forehead, and he wasn’t even near the fire.

He could see it up ahead on Lichfield Street. She wanted to be near the Wolverhampton Art Gallery when she had taken the move, and he hoped to any God out there that she had decided to move once more. His eyes went to the fourteenth floor for a moment, and he swore he saw her beautiful blond hair or her pale blue eyes. He blinked, and she was gone. The flames were engulfing the building, and it seemed like most of the people were out of the building. Some were covered in soot and coughing. A few firemen went over that way.

Other firemen and women went over to the nearby hydrant, while others like Liam headed into the building. He instantly went for the stairs, and he started up them three at the time. His legs were long and stronger from all the work he had to do to be a fireman and as a fireman. He hadn’t spotted her in the crowd either. So, she was either inside of the building still, or she moved away. He hoped it was the latter, but he had to be sure.

It only took minutes for him to get to the fourteenth floor, and he walked down the hall. It was the fifth door on the right. He knew that because he had counted on occasion. The door went down after he had kicked it, and he could tell this was where the fire had started. It was hotter in there, and there were plenty more flames in this room than the others.

His eyes searched for the girl, and he instantly went to the kitchen. This was where most fires started, but she wasn’t there, and he could feel sweat dripping down his face. He had to get her now, or he and she would die. He took a deep breath from the oxygen tank he had before he went off to her room. There, she lay on the ground. A broken lamp was beside her, and it seemed to be the thing that had caused the fire.

His strong, muscular arms instantly wrapped themselves around her, and he put the mask to her face as he started out the building. He coughed lightly as his vision got fuzzy slightly, and he could hear the girl in his arms take shallow breaths. He took less time going down than up, and he was close to pasting out from lack of air. As he exited the building, he was coughing.

His brown eyes went to her face, and her own blue eyes were wide with realization. He breathed a sigh of relief, and only her name fell from his lips, “Clarissa.”
