All I Want For Christmas Is You

Chapter 10

ONE WEEK LATER:

“Your mother signed a paper at the beginning of the school year that allows us to take you to any place for any amount of time, only if it is through the school,” Mrs. Canterbury said to me, handing me the signed paper. I glanced at the signature and smiled. The school hadn’t been able to get into contact with my mom, but they found a paper so they could allow me to go with Karla to London.
I walked slowly back into my seat and logged onto my laptop. I screened the webpage I was on and clicked on a new tab. I typed www.universityoflondon.edu.uk and found the orientation date. It was on the 22nd. I might be able to make the orientation if I’m lucky, I thought to myself. I felt Karla’s breath on my neck. I quickly jerked my head around to find her staring at my computer screen. “You CAN go to your college thing because we might be there then!” she said, pointing at the screen. I rolled my eyes, because I obviously knew that.
I closed my laptop to make Karla go sit back down. I giggled as she pouted at me as she sat the desk in front of me. Silly Karla.
“Have you girls started packing your bags for next weekend?” Mrs. Canterbury asked, trying to fuel up conversation. Karla nodded as she zipped up her grey jogging hoodie. I shrugged and laughed a bit. “Well you defiantly need to bring warm clothes. I heard this is one of the colder winters on record. It might snow, although its very unlikely,” she said obviously checking the weather forecast on the internet. “Alrighty!” I said as I typed it onto my reminder list.
“Have you heard back from tú madre?” Karla asked flopping herself on the seat next to me. I removed my fingers from the keyboard and set them in my lap as I looked down and shook my head. “I wonder what happened. Maybe her phone broke or something,” Karla suggested in hope. I shrugged and I felt a tear forming in my eye. “I don’t know. Her phone still rang. So I know it’s not off of dead,” I said, brushing my fringe out of my eyes. Karla adjusted herself in the seat and looked at me with hope filling the brim of her eyes. “Everything will be okay,” she said, ending her sentence with a friendly smile. But I knew she couldn’t promise anything. She was not mother nature.
