Keeping Hope

It was no accident

When the bell rang, letting the students know they were now free to leave, Emma got up and walked out without glancing at Harry. As Emma paced through the door, she spotted Niall and Louis waiting for her right outside the class room. She knew why that was. Niall wanted to make sure of two things. One was making sure that rumors in school didn't affect her, the students talking won't get her upset, and two, make sure she stays away from Harry Styles. They stride out and up the hill to where Eleanor awaits them.
"So how was class?" She asked when they reached her.
"Boring, same shit every day" Louis sat down, pulling Eleanor on to his lap.
"What about your morning?" Niall turned to Emma.
"I got a project, it's due by next week, guess who I was paired with" though she didn't wait for them to answer- "Harry" She stared straight at Niall.

Emma's POV

"I can't believe you need to work with him... Karma is a bitch" Louis found me being teamed up with Harry hilarious.
"Emma, you need to ask Mr. D to switch you with someone else" Niall said.
"Why? It's just a project, I'll write it myself and put his name there or something.. It'll be fine" I shrugged.
I didn't want to be teamed up with Harry, but there was nothing I could do. I won't go and ask to be switched now, it was just too rude to do.
"I remember Harry having good grades" Eleanor suddenly said. We all turned to look at her.
"He did, we used to use his help all the time"
"You did? I didn't realize you guys were friends before" I tilted my head.
"Well, not really.. I was friends with his sister.." She trailed off.
I didn't push her for more information. I could tell by the look on her face she didn't really want to talk about it.
"So El, did Jen get you to help with Homecoming too?" Niall changed the subject.
"Yes she did, which reminds me I should go, Emma you should come too" I look at Niall, who nodded in approval, always pushing me to become better friends with his own.
"Sure" I offered her a smile as I got up to my feet after her.
"So listen" Eleanor started when we were away from the boys ears "I know it's kind of scary needing to work with Harry, but you should know, he is smart.. and even though he acts like a douchebag, he is only like that to guys, usually he has enough respect for girls" We continued through the path quietly. I was thinking of what she just said. If Harry had respect for girls then why did he treat me like he did the other day?
"How was his sister- Hope?" I finally asked.
"I miss her..." Eleanor exhaled "We were best friends"
"You were?" This was a new piece of information too.
"Emma" Perrie waved to me as we past her. I wave back smiling.
"Her too" Eleanor nodded towards Perrie.
"What do you mean?" I was confused.
"Perrie, Hope and I.. We were inseparable" She laughed.
"What happen?"
"You know what happen" She whispered
"Hi girls" Jennifer was happy to see us. "So we need to give out flyers today" She offered each of us a bunch.
"That's it?" Eleanor asked
"For now.. I'll join you" She started back out again, us following after her.
"So Eleanor" Jen turned "did you have fun Saturday?"
"The party was Ace, I had such fun"
"Are we on for coffee later still? Emma you should join" Jennifer invited me. I didn't have time to answer, she started giving out flyers inviting people to Homecoming.
In between Jen or Eleanor turned to talk to me.
"Hi again"
I turn to find Dylan Harry and Nick standing behind me.
"Hi guys" I smiled "Feel like coming to Homecoming?" I offered them sheets.
"Are you going?" Harry asked, his eyes closing to slits
"I might..." I say looking back at Dylan and Nick
"Is Jennifer going to be there?" Nick asked. That made Harry chuckle giving Dylan a slight shove. I look at Dylan, noting him staring at Jennifer.
"Hey Jen" I call out. Jennifer turns. A smile appears on her face as she made way over to us. Eleanor glanced back to see what was going on. When she saw the boys she shook her head going back to the flyers.
"Come tell Dylan and the boys how fun homecoming is going to be" I say, "Dylan doesn't believe me" I give him a slight shove.
"You have to come! It will be a lot of fun" Then she turned back to give out some more flyers flashing Dylan one last smile.
"My heart" He breathed catching at his chest.
"I think you're coming down with a crush Dylan" I put my hand up to his forehead letting out a giggle.
"Coming down? He's been sick with it since like forever" Harry rolled his eyes "Come on mates" He turned and walked away without another word.
"Friends of yours ha?" Eleanor winked.
"You don't really know who Dylan is, do you?" I ask Jennifer "You go to the same school for years, how does something like this happen?"
"Well, it is a quite big school, and I have never shared a class with- what was his name again? So..." Her voice trailed off as she gave out some more flyers.
When we were done with the flyers it was almost time to go back to class, Eleanor and I walked back to where we left Niall and Louis.
"Your friendship with Jennifer seems kind of new" I state, deciding to be bold here. I was trying to understand the different friendships. I knew Dylan and Harry were good friends, and Louis and Niall. I knew Eleanor was dating Louis and she used to be friends with Perrie and Hope, that friendship coming to an end with Hope's death.
"Well, we hung out until now with different people, and then she started dating Tyler a few months ago which was Hope's boyfriend.. But Niall became friends with her last year, them sharing classes, so we hang out quite a bit now" She answered
"Oh.. It's just.. Quite confusing the friendships at this place" I say, trying to explain my curiosity.
"You'll understand soon enough" She touched my shoulder as we joined the boys.

Harry's POV

I was amazed to see Emma giving out flyers, I didn't think she was into stuff like that.
"I love Emma! You have to date that chick" Dylan was going on about her since she got Jennifer to look at him.
"I can't believe you have waited so many years for someone to introduce you" Nick chuckled
"It's because that Styles here doesn't help friends out"
"If you can't walk up to a girl then there is nothing I can do for you mate" I spread my arms to the side.
"Dylan, you really do need to get a life mate" Nick said
"Nick my man- I am liking you more and more" I tap his back.
It is time to go back to class. Dylan and I had English lit together so we parted from Nick walking to class.
"Watch where you're going" Dylan hissed at someone bumping into him. I look to find Sam catching his balance as he tried not to fall over after knocking into Dylan.
I stare at him as he glances over and stops in place.
"Yo Styles…" He starts, looking sideways making sure no one is watching.
"I'm sorry about that eye.. my brother is a dick when he drinks" He mumbled
"Your brother's a dick all the time, but when he drinks he turns into a sucking sod" I say
"Nicely put" Dylan agrees with me high fiving my hand as we both stood looking at Sam.
"Listen.. I know things went down between you and him" He tries again
"Oh.. things went down as in- my sister was killed? That's what you mean right?" I say brusquely.
"I'm sorry about your sister… But I am not to blame for her death- I wasn't there! And I didn't pull the trigger" Sam took a step closer to me, his expression gray.
"Right. You weren't there, so you know nothing about what happen" I get right up in his face.
"I know it wasn't your fault"
That made me close my mouth. What is he talking about? I watch as Sam gives me one last glance before turning away, walking in the other direction.
"What was that about?" Dylan adjusted the strap of his bag.
"I don't know, but it seems he knows more than he is letting on".
We enter the class room and take our seats. My mind still rolling over the conversation I just had with Sam.

Emma's POV

When I walked through the school gates I come across my dad's car, him standing, leaning on the car door, waving at me. I roll my eyes as a smile appears on my lips, pacing towards him.
"Dad, I told you I was fine walking back by myself" I let him one hand hug me and kiss the top of my head.
"I know but I got out early today so I thought I'll come pick you up" He grinned.
"Thank you" I say as he pushed off the car door. I open it so I could get in.
"Hey Em- isn't that Harry? Harry!" My dad called out. I felt my cheeks redden. What was my dad doing? How did he even know how Harry looked like?
"Hello Chief Horan" Harry offers my dad a hand shake as he reached us.
"Call me Jon, I'm driving home- would you fancy a ride?"
I get in the front seat looking straight, wishing this was not happening.
"Thank you" Harry answered. I could hear the smile in his voice, probably those dimples of his showing, making him look so- ewhh!
"I wanted to thank you for pulling Emma out of the pool the other day" My dad said as he started the car.
"Oh it was nothing, really.. Emma, so I was thinking we should start on that project" Harry turned to me.
It takes everything in my power not to groan out loud.
"A project? You didn't tell me about that- Harry you should come over now" My dad glanced over at me, then at the mirror sending Harry a smile.
"We just got it" I say, keeping my voice even. What happen to my dad being the chief and not trusting Harry the ex con?
"Yeah, sure.. Whatever" I say and keep quiet the rest of the ride home.
When my dad parks, Harry excuses himself to go put his bag down at home, promising he'll be right over.
"Emma" My dad starts, and I know what is coming.
"Dad" I answer him with a stare, as I do every time he calls my name but doesn't continue his sentence.
"That boy had a tuff few years, you could be nicer"
"I know, I'm just… I'm a little tired that's all, Harry and I are friends, don't worry" I brush him off
"I remember a time you needed a friend.. you must remember how that felt like"
"Dad- Harry has a load of friends really"
There was a knock on the door. I open it, letting Harry in.
"Come on, let's get this over with" I say starting up the stairs to my room.
"Ah ha.. no , you kids can write your project down here, in the kitchen" My dad points to the table. I glance back at Harry, noting his shrug and lead the way.
I put my sketchbook down on the table leaving Harry to go get my laptop from my room.
When I enter, I walk to my mirror checking my reflection. I can do this. I can. It's just a project, my dad is here, and there is no pool outside for him to pull me too.
I can do this.
I make my way back down with the laptop under my arm.
"Emma, I need to run back out for a little bit, there is some food from Auntie M in the fridge you two can eat" My dad says as he walked out of the house. I wave goodbye and turn into the kitchen. I find Harry looking through my sketchbook. I breathe in sharply. There are two ways I can go about. I can get cross, and yell at him for going through it without permission, but then risk getting into a fight, causing the whole writing an essay together be more strained then it already is. I decide to go about the other way.
"So are you hungry? Or can we start?" I say sharply as I swoop the book out of his hand and close it, putting it to the side. Harry's eyes narrow for a slight second. I was sure he would comment, but instead he says we should just start with the essay, the corners of his mouth twitch as he does.
"So we need to write about the Blitz" I say, opening my laptop to start a research.
"Ah ha.." Harry was leaning his chin on his palm staring at me.
"Harry" I turn to look at him. I was getting the feeling he wasn't going to help me.
"If you want- you can go.. I'll do this on my own" I sigh. I watch as he sits up straighter
"Wouldn't you just love that" He said coldly.
"What is that supposed to mean?" I crinkle my forehead, studying his face.
"You don't want to be writing the project with me, just say it" He folds his arms challenging me.
"I don't care who I write it with.. as long as it gets done" I say through clench teeth.
"I wonder… are you always such a bad lair?" his eyes are hard. I can feel the anger rising inside of me.
"You know what? I really don't know what your problem is! Are you trying to get the whole world to hate you or something? Pushing anyone who is trying to be nice to you? Because Harry.. I am really trying here. I know you had a tuff time. My dad told me what happen to your sister.. I know it was an accident, and you paid the price, and it's hard coming back.. and I am trying here, even though god knows you don't deserve it from me after what happened Saturday night, but I am putting that aside and giving you a second chance! SO could you fucking take it instead of challenging my patience with you over and over again?" I watch his eyes as I wait for his reply.
"You talked to your dad about what happen to my sister?" I nod at him, are eyes locked in a stare.
"He told you it was an accident?"
I nod again.
I jump in my seat as Harry slams his fists down on the table "Fuck this town! Fuck them all" He shoots up to his feet.
"Harry!" I get up after him. I am cautious though, staying away. I felt bad for what this boy has been through, but I don't trust him, knowing he is unstable with those mode swings of his.
"Harry, look at me!" I demand, as he strides back and forth his palms squeezed into fists, trying to control his anger.
He looks up and walks straight up to me. I take a step back, my back up against the wall as he leaned his hands on the sides of my head.
"What if I told you your dad was wrong? It was no accident! It was on purpose!"

Emma watched Harry, her heart racing. She found it difficult to breathe as it just downed on her. Harry just admitted to a crime. Admitted it was no accident, and she was alone with him, trapped up against a wall. With eyes wide with fear she prayed her dad would walk in right now and save her, before this lunatic of a boy hurts her too.

Notes

Oh darling.. I'm so sorry...
A mother teaches us everything-except how to live without her.. It is painful and sometimes the memories knock the wind out of us, and the feeling of lose comes in waves, but you're strong and wonderful because of her- and nothing is your fault! I am sure she is so very proud and full of joy with who you're growing up to be! SO cherish your memories and keep them close to your heart for they will make you smile and happy, and strong at moments of need ! Even though she is not right in front of you to touch and to hold, she is there with you- in your heart. And I truly believe you can talk to her and she will answer, you will feel it, and know what she would guide you to do.
Lots of love poppet- chin up xx

It's really sad that Emma lost her mom , I could relate to her though I lost my mom too and Miss her very much and I currently live with my dad . Not a day goes by that i don't think about her , sometimes thinking that it's my fault . If only i would have stayed up she probably wouldn't have died

@imapenguin2
