Keeping Hope

The Flu

When Harry got to school Tuesday morning, he didn't expect to see Eleanor and Perrie sitting together on the bench at the school entrance, Hope's diary in their hands as both their heads came together to read the entries. Harry left the diary with Perrie, giving her the right to see into her best friend's thoughts and feelings. They were hurting, and maybe reading some of Hope's happy thoughts would cheer them up.
"Hi ladies," He smiled, stopping to have a short chat.
"Hi Harry!" Eleanor beamed up. They both were in a much better mood then they were yesterday when Emma and Harry left them.
"Did you know it was Hope who pinned your boxers to the flag before the game?" Perrie asked holding up the journal.
"I did, but not because I read it, she couldn't keep it from me, she felt bad since I was punished, so she helped me do the teams laundry that whole week," I grinned at them.
"I can't believe she kept that from us," Eleanor shook her head in shock, though she did have a smile on her face.
"Have you seen Emma? Did she get here yet?" Harry asked. Both girls shook their heads before going back to the diary.

Harry's POV

I was looking for Emma all over the place, she wasn't answering her phone either. I had practice after school, but I already made up my mind to go to her house after and make sure she was all right.
When I walked into the locker room a bunch of the players are already there, getting changed into workout clothes.
I go to my locker and open it. Inside there was a folded note. I take it out, opening it, while looking around making sure no one is reading it over my shoulder.

I PUT THE DIARY IN ELEANOR CALDER'S LOCKER

I look around once again to see if someone is watching me.
"Did you see anyone put something in my locker?" I ask the bloke next to me. He shakes his head and goes back to his phone.
"YO Tomlinson! Perrie and your girl are back to being besties," Zayn shouts out as Louis and Niall walk into the locker room.
"So?" Louis throws back at him.
"So we should double date and shit, hang out," Zayn pulls on his shoes.
"Yeah man, I don't think so," Louis turned to his locker. I watch as him and Niall exchange a few words while changing. I read the note again. It is printed, so there is no way of guessing who wrote it.
I slam the door to the locker shut and walk out to the field.
When I pass Niall I stop and turn back to him.
"Hey, Niall.. did Emma come to school today?" I ask him. Sod it, I want to know where the hell she is, even if it means I need to ask him.
"She's home, sick.. Her dad called my mum this morning," He replied. I nod at him and continue walking.
"Harry, wait up!" I turn to see Louis jog up to me.
"What's up?" I ask, bringing my hands to my hips.
"Eleanor told me about yesterday," He said looking straight at me. God, girls couldn't keep their mouths shut.
"Before you get cross with her, you should know she wasn't about to, but she called me up drunk, and crying, said you spilled the alcohol and she had nothing to drink," He kicked the grass.
"Yeah.. they were getting drunk.. playing a stupid drinking game, I thought it was best to stop them," I shrug, waiting for him to bring up the diary but he didn't.
"Well, thanks man, for looking out for them," He taps my shoulder and jogs back into the room to finish getting dressed.
When practice was over I made my way to the car. Dylan was leaning against the door waiting for me.
"Jen said Emma was sick," He stated, and I nod, letting him know I already knew about it.
"This is work from today- the classes they shared, Jen told me I should give it to you since you will probably head over there," He offers me the notebook.
"Thanks mate, hey Dylan, someone left this in my locker," I take out the piece of paper and give it to him. He opens it up and reads it.
"Arsewipe," He mutters under his breath, "Whoever this is he's playing with you, ignore it," He tells me.
"Yeah well, for now I have too, since there is no way to find out who it is anyhow, I'm gonna go to Emma, see how she is," I open the car door, as Dylan got out of my way. We wave to Nick who passed us.
"Yeah, I'm going to Jen, we're studying for that test tomorrow, say Hi to Em will you," He fist bumped me.
"And you say hi to Jennifer," I get into the driver's seat. I salute him and close the door, turning the engine on. Eleanor and Perrie walked out the gates, Louis and Niall following, when they see me they wave, which makes the boys look up. I wave back, and then send a wave to the guys as well, things are different now, no point ignoring them any longer.

Emma's POV

I woke up to a knock on my door. Groggy from sleep, I sit up and rub the sleep from my eyes. My head was pounding, and the world was spinning.
"Rumor has it you're sick," Harry walks in, his bag on one shoulder and a cup of water in his hand.
"If feeling like I was run over by a train is being sick then yeah," I manage.
"Cracking jokes! That's a good sign to recovery," Harry winked. He walked up to me and sat himself on the bed, he had a smirk on his lips which I wanted to wipe of, not in the mood for company.
"What?" I sigh, when he continues staring at me without saying a word.
"Your hair," His dimples showed
"Harry, I feel like garbage, so if you're here to mock me, please leave," I tremble, laying back and pulling the duvet over my head.
"No, sit up love, I brought you your pills," Harry tugs at the blanket.
I look up at him confused. "How did you get in? Did my dad let you in?" I question, I was disoriented, my mind not working properly, so it was a little hard remembering if my dad was home or not.
"Your dad had to go in for work, so he left my mum the key, and she promised to check on you, since I have your homework I volunteered to come," He replied, holding up the pills.
"Thanks," I sigh, though I don't move, feeling too weak for that kind of effort.
"Come on Em, you'll feel better after you take this, I promise," His palm closes over my wrist pulling me slightly to sit up. I do as I'm told, and Harry puts the pills in my hand, handing over the glass of water.
"Your dad made you a doctor's appointment later today. My mum said she'd be happy to take you, unless you would like her to call your auntie,"
"It's fine," I mumble, laying back down. I felt drained. I close my eyes, to try and make the world stop spinning. I feel Harry's palm touch my forehead. A moment after I feel his lips take their place, his curls tickling me.
"What are you doing?" I whisper.
"Checking your temperature, which I think you've got, where you feeling like this yesterday?" He asked softly. I just nodded, not able to do anything else but that. I felt a tear leak out of my right eye, but I don't do a thing to wipe it away. I always cry when I feel ill, I just can't help it. The tear felt cool against my skin, which was how I knew I had a high temperature.
"Emma, drink the rest of your water before you go back to sleep,"
I don't move, I can't. I feel the weight of him lift from the bed, and hear his footsteps as he left my room.

When I wake again latter, there is a damp cloth on my forehead, and my headache wasn't as pronounced. Harry is sitting at my desk doing his homework and I watch him for a while. I was touched he stayed over, and gratitude washed over me.
"Harry," my voice cracks from dryness, but he hears me nonetheless, turning at once, a worried look on his face.
"I was going to wake you in 15 minutes for your doctor's appointment," He came to my side. I nod slightly.
"How are you feeling?" He touches my forehead. "I think it is too early to take some more pills, my mum should be over soon, and I'll drive you to the clinic," He strokes my hair. I close my eyes, too tired to answer him.
"Don't go back to sleep Emma, let's get you ready. Do you want to change? I'll get your stuff ready and my mum will help you," He stated gently.
There is a knock on my door, and Anna walks in.
"Hi sweetheart, how are you feeling?" She smiled kindly to me.
"I'll wait down stairs for you," Harry got up from by my side. When he past his mum she grabbed his face planting a kiss on his cheek.
"Ok love, lets help you out," She pulls the duvet off of me, helping me out of bed. Anna walks with me to the bathroom, and waits at the door way until I'm done. After I change into sweat pants and a jumper, she helps me tie my shoes, since I had a hard time bending over to do it myself. Watching her tie them for me, with such compaction in her face, reminded me of my own mother, who always sat by my side on sick days. I was missing her dearly and couldn't help it when the tears come again.
"Oh dear, don't worry, I bet it's just the flu, you'll be better in no time," Anna hugs me.
"Thank you for taking the time to be with me," I breathe, trying to calm the tears.
"Oh baby! It's no problem at all!" She kisses the top of my head. She is still hugging my shoulder when we make our way down the stairs.

Harry's POV

It pinched at my heart seeing Emma like this. Her eyes were red from crying. It seemed like she can't control it. She keeps wiping at her eyes before the tears have the opportunity to fall down her cheeks, her chin trembling.
It must be hard going through an illness without a mum by your side, to be there and spoil you rotten. I couldn't believe her dad wasn't here, the thought of him being at work instead of with his daughter made my eyes flash red with anger.
I was sitting next to Emma at the waiting room, my mum sitting on her other side, as we waited for the doctor to call her in.
"Emma Horan?" A nurse asked, and my mum stood, helping Emma get to her feet. My mum went in with her, leaving me to wait outside.
My phone rings and I answer it swiftly before someone says something about disturbing the peace.
"Talk to me," I answer, seeing Dylan's name on the screen.
"SO Nick, Jen and I are going out later for pizza, wanna join?" He gets to the point.
"I don't know man, Emma is pretty sick and her dad isn't home," I whisper, since phones aren't allowed in the waiting room.
"It'll be much later, and her dad should be home by then," Dylan presses. I hear noises and then Jennifer gets on the line.
"Styles, are you babysitting Emma?" She asks.
"Would you want to be alone when you're sick?" I answer angrily.
"Fair enough, send her my love, and tell her I wish her better, maybe we'll bring her some pizza? Let me know if she wants any,"
"Will do," I say and hang up.
Emma and my mum join my side soon after. My mum was right, it was the flu. She had to stay home for the next few days, drink lots and wait for it to pass.
When we reach her home she is already sleeping. I look out for her dad's car, though it is not in sight.
"Don't wake her mum, I'll carry her in," I say. My mum raises a brow, but she doesn't argue.
I lift Emma in my arms, amazed at how light she was. My mum held the door open so we could get in.
I lay her on her bed, and pull of her shoes. She seemed so peaceful. I cover her and kiss the top of her head before leaving her room.

Harry and my mum stayed down stairs until the Chief came home late that night. When he walked through the door, Harry got up and walked out without a word, leaving my mum to fill him in on the doctor's orders. He then made his way up the stairs and into his room, going straight to the window. There was a small light he left on in Emma's room, and he could see the dim of it through her open curtains. A slight sigh leaves his lips before he turns to get ready for bed. And I am waiting, waiting for him to finally make his move.

Oh darling.. I'm so sorry...
A mother teaches us everything-except how to live without her.. It is painful and sometimes the memories knock the wind out of us, and the feeling of lose comes in waves, but you're strong and wonderful because of her- and nothing is your fault! I am sure she is so very proud and full of joy with who you're growing up to be! SO cherish your memories and keep them close to your heart for they will make you smile and happy, and strong at moments of need ! Even though she is not right in front of you to touch and to hold, she is there with you- in your heart. And I truly believe you can talk to her and she will answer, you will feel it, and know what she would guide you to do.
Lots of love poppet- chin up xx

It's really sad that Emma lost her mom , I could relate to her though I lost my mom too and Miss her very much and I currently live with my dad . Not a day goes by that i don't think about her , sometimes thinking that it's my fault . If only i would have stayed up she probably wouldn't have died
