Rolling With The Punches

Visits, Stories, and Needles

*Louise’s POV*
“Im hungry!” Niall complains to Harry and me as we walk down the hospital hallway. “We just ate!” Harry yells for the seventeenth time, getting a wired look from a nurse walking the opposed direction as us. “Sorry.” I mumble to her as we cross paths, but she just rolled her eyes. “Room 666.” Harry says as we stop in front of it. I nod and slowly open the door, scared of what I might see. “Hi.” Jamie says from her hospital bed as she put on a fake smile once she sees up.

I froze. She looked terrible, nothing like the beautiful girl a saw yesterday. Her tan skin was now pail and clammy. Her blond hair was no longer sleek but dull and lifeless. Her pink lips were pale and crack. But worst of all was her eyes. The one clear dark blue that resembled a Caribbean ocean that sparkled like stars were now gray and full of pain.

“Guys, knock it of or im going to shove these crayons up your asses!” Ashley said from the catch on the side of the room were she sat coloring in a coloring book. I nodded and walked over to the catch, followed by the there boys. “I know this must be hard for you guys, im not expecting you to stay. You can leave; I know this is a lot to take in.” Jamie said, breaking down into a fit of coughs after words, after a few minutes of sightline. Im fine, how about you boys?” I ask once she was done coughing, getting nods from the 2 boys sitting next to me.

“Shit!” Ashley groaned as she stood up abruptly and looked at her watch. “I promised I would take Bella to the park to practice for her soccer game next week!” she said as looked around the room mumbling something about her coat. “Ashley, you don’t even know how to play soccer!” CeCe said as she laughed lightly, but stopping to moan in pain. “Then ill go with, I love to play soccer.” Niall told Jamie as he stood up and handed Ashley her coat from the back of a chair that sat beside Jamie’s bed. “No cursing around my daughter Horan!” Jamie yelled after him as they walked out the door, causing Harry into a fit of lighter.

“So how are you feeling?” Harry asked as he tried to control his lighter. “Like shit.” Jamie snapped back as she narrowed his eyes and shot daggers at him. Harry winced back at her sudden outburst and Jamie’s eyes atomadicaly softened. “Im sorry Harry, I just feel really terrible.” She admitted. “It’s ok. So when did you start boxing, it’s really hot you know.” Harry told her, causing my hands to form fist whail I silently hoped that no one would notice. “So you are the flirt.” She said with a slight giggle.

“I started when I was 7, had my first match when I was 9.” She told him with a big smile. “Why did you start?” I asked her curiously. “I used to live in Taxes, until I was five and my parents split up. Them my mom got a job offer here in L.A so my mom, brother and I moved out here. I was five, my brother was 8. About a week after we moved here, my brother and I were walking home from school and we got lost. It was poring rain and we had no been to go so we ended up sitting under a tree across from a boxing club. The owner came out and we though he was going to yell at us but instead, he took us into the boxing club, gave us blanks and hot chocolate and call our mom for us.” She told us, stopping to smile at the memory. “Anyways, the owner, Frank, offered to teach my brother boxing. You see, his club teaches boxing to kids for free to keep the off the streets and out of gangs. You don’t have to start paying unless you want to do tournaments. So every day after school Jacob and I would walk down to the club and he would box until my mother got off work and I would hang out with Frank’s daughter that I went to school with, Ashley. When I was seven I decided I wanted to box too. Most the boxers were high shooter guys and all told me I was crazy, but Frank believed in me. By the time I was nine I was competing in tournaments, boxing girls and guys twice my size because I was so good. When I got pregnant I had to stop boxing. Within a week of giving birth to Bella, I was back in the gym training again. When I was 17, I was nationally ranked, and now at the age of 19, im ranked eighth.” She told us with a big smile, a real smile. Her eyes twinkled and the pain was washed away.

“Ok Jamie. Im here to take out the Chemo IV and putting a water IV. Once you have enough water in your system we are going to run some test on your cancer and you will be able to leave tomorrow, ok?” A nurse said as she walked into the room, pushing a big cart of needles. Jamie slowly nodded, her eyes trained on the needles as the shine in her eyes faded and her skin started to look a sickly green. “Lou.” She whispered quietly as the nurse started to rampage through some needles. “Yes?” I replyed back. “Can you hold my hand? Im scared of needles.” She said as a small blush crepe onto her cheeks. I stood up and walked to the opposed side of the bed that the nurse was on, taking her free hand giving it a small squeeze as she gave me a shy smile.
