Against All Odds

nine

Getting ready for school on Monday I feel extremely rushed; I feel extra anxious to get to school early. I didn't get to see Harry at all yesterday on account of my brother's broken heart. I didn't think he would be this upset since he's been trying to break up with her for like two months now. Apparently he's not over her despite the readiness to be out of the relationship. So yesterday was spent watching movies and doing weird things to keep his mind off of it. We actually had a lot of fun. We always do, though so I guess it's not that surprising.

"Mase, you have practice today, right?" I yell from my room, loud enough so he can hear me in his.

"Yeah!" he calls back.

I throw my bag over my shoulder and check my hair in the mirror one last time. I decided to dress more comfortably today. I never got a chance to end things with Ryan and Harry is not going to be happy about that. I figure if I at least don't draw any extra attention to myself that might help my situation a little bit.

"I'm off to school," I tell him, stopping in his door.

"Okay, do you want to go out for pizza tonight with me and Troy?"

"Umm..probably. I'll let you know later."

"What, you have other plans?" he asks, getting his backpack from the floor. I bite my lip and shrug. I could be seeing Harry, if I'm lucky. "Alright, be all secretive. We're going to Dino's if you want to come."

"Okay. I'm driving separate, I'm not waiting for you today."

He laughs. "Okay."

Once we're at school I walk straight to the english wing to Mr. Styles' classroom. He's standing at the board writing notes. People usually hang out outside before first period so the hallways are pretty deserted in the mornings. I stand and lean against the door waiting for him to notice me. He looks dashing n a crisp white button up shirt, the top two buttons undone and a pair of grey slacks. No wonder every girl in school is fantasizing over him.

"Are you done objectifying me?" he asks, smiling without looking at me. I laugh and walk into the room, standing beside his desk.

"How was the rest of your weekend?"

He sets his chalk down and turns to face me. "It was lonely. I missed you."

I turn and look at the doorway to check before stepping closer to him. "I missed you too."

"Can you come over tonight? I want to make you dinner."

My heart swells at his offer. He's so perfect. Maybe that's premature but...this is the way I always pictured the beginning of a real relationship. I've dated a few times, but never anything serious. Definitely never long enough to fall in love.

"I would love too, but I'm not sure what to tell my brother. I hate lying to him."

"Yeah, seems like you two are really close."

I nod and stick my fingers in my pockets. "We sort of have to be I guess."

"I think it's great. If you figure something out just text me. I'll keep my night open." He smiles warmly and steps closer to me. "You know where to find me." I nod and look down at his lips. He chuckles and steps closer again. "Subtle, Miss Williams."

"I wasn't trying to be, Mr. Styles."

I jump and step back when someone else knocks on the door. One of the sophomores walks in, clearly a shy girl. She's really small with dark red hair. She seems to know that she walked in on something because her face is bright red.

"Sorry, I umm...my english teacher wanted me to...he said that your specialty is essays. I'm supposed to ask for some extra help," she stammers.

"You're Mikayla?" Harry asks, gesturing for her to come in.

"Yeah." She steps into the classroom and looks nervously at me. He's not the reason she's nervous, I realize...I am. I'm the intimidating, I guess popular, senior. She's afraid of me.

"Hi, I'm Savannah." I smile and hold my hand out to her. She looks shocked before she takes it gently. "You're a sophomore, right?" She nods and adjusts the strap of her backpack. "Well, Mr. Styles is a great teacher, I'm sure he'll be able to help you out."

"Actually, I was going to recommend you for that," he says, sitting in his desk chair. He smiles proudly at me and I raise my eyebrows in question. "Mikayla's teacher wanted me to find another student for her to be mentored by. He wanted someone from my classes because I teach seniors and he feels Mikayla's standard of writing is a little further along than others of her age and he thinks she could go quite far with it."

"We've written one paper," I remind him. He nods and runs his hand through his hair. I bite my lip as I follow the motion. He notices and tries not to smile.

"Yes, but that paper was the best one of anyone in my three classes, so you're the one I chose."

I look back at Mikayla and smile to her. She looks around nervously.

"I would be happy to help."

She looks up at me and nods her head. "That would be nice, thank you."

"I'll umm...I'll find you around campus and we can set up a time."

"Okay. Thanks. Umm..bye." She quickly turns and walks out of the classroom.

"She's terrified of you," Harry says, laughing when she's gone. "Do you torture the younger ones in your spare time?"

"Of course not! I have no idea why she was so jumpy." He laughs again. "So, tutoring?"

"I meant what I said, your writing is beyond most of the other students that I teach. But, I also figured it would give you an alibi."

"An alibi?"

He stands and walks to the other side of me so his back is to the door. "So you can come see me and have an excuse besides seeing another guy or one of your friends. I'm assuming your brother doesn't associate much with girls in year 10?"

"This is America, you wierdo. They're sophomores. And no, he doesn't. Very sly of you, Mr. Styles."

"I'm enjoying you calling me that," he says lowly, stepping closer to me. He gets dangerously close and my heart rate speeds up. "Don't you have class?"

"Ummm..." I shake my head and shake my fingers through my hair. "Right, yeah." He smirks at how bothered I am. "I'll text you."

"I'll be waiting. Let me know about tonight?"

I nod and the first bell rings. Great, now I'll be sprinting to class.

"Hey, Savannah!"

I stop in my tracks and shut my eyes, hoping that somehow I'll turn invisible and not have to speak to Ryan. Before I know it he's beside me and his hand in on my arm.

"Hey, Ryan." I shift slightly and his arm drops. Thank goodness. It's lunchtime and the outdoor picnic area is packed with people.

"So, you took off pretty fast the other day. I was hoping we could hang out again."

I look over his shoulder and see Harry watching the exchange. He raises his eyebrows slightly and I know that I'm busted now. If I had ended things with Ryan obviously we wouldn't be this comfortable around each other. Well, he's comfortable. I definitely am not.

"Yeah, I uh...I had a thing with Mason. What's up?" I ask, desperate to end this conversation. I feel my phone buzz in my pocket and before I take it out I already know who it's from. "One sec." I unlock the phone and read the new text message. Harry.

Doesn't look to me like you ended things.

"Everything okay?" Ryan asks. I look over his shoulder to Mr. Styles who now looks quite unhappy.

"Not really. Look, we need to talk about something."

"Alright, come sit with me," he says, gesturing to an empty table.

"I umm..I have to go finish something before last period so I can't sit. I just wanted to say-"

"Before you say what I think you're going to say, hear me out." I nod and he takes a step closer. "I had a really good time with you this weekend and I want to hang out with you again. Before you say no, just think about it okay? We could have a really good time together. Think about it."

He walks away before I get the chance to respond. I run my fingers through my tangled hair in frustration. My eyes lock with Harry's once again and he looks even more pissed off. He nods his head towards the building and starts walking towards it, me following in his tracks. When I get to the hallway I look around, spotting his curly hair disappear around the corner. I walk quickly after him and he locks eyes with me as he disappears into a storage closet. I look around to see if there's any watchful eyes before walking down the hall and stepping inside the small space. When the door is closed I'm back into it, Harry placing his hands on either side of my head.

"You lied to me," he says darkly.

"I didn't."

"You said you were going to end things with that kid. That didn't look like an end to me, Savannah."

"I just didn't get a chance to talk to him about it on Saturday. I didn't spend a lot of time with him, I swear." I watch his eyes carefully and he remains angry.

"And what about just now? If you didn't have the chance Saturday then that would have been the next best thing."

I get more nervous and his eyes stay dark. "He didn't really let me speak," I admit quietly.

"Well isn't that a shame," he taunts, getting closer still. I know I should be worried but this situation is just way too hot for me to think about Ryan.

"I'll talk to him, I promise. I just feel bad hurting his feelings."

"I'm not going to be your second choice, Savannah."

I reach up with both hands and put them against his neck. "You are my first choice. There is nothing going on with Ryan, okay?"

"How do I know that? He's your age, he can take you out, talk to you at school without drawing unwanted attention." He sighs and his head drops a little, eyes looking more sad than angry. "If I wasn't so selfish I would end this and let you date him instead."

"What? No, you can't-"

"Good thing I'm selfish."

His lips crash into mine and I wrap my arms around his neck firmly, holding him there. He leans his body into mine and his hands wrap around my waist. Soon enough his tongue has pushed through my lips and our kiss has deepened enough for my breathing to be lost. He suddenly pulls back and takes a step back from me, leaving me cold and lonely without his touch despite his proximity.

"I'll talk to him today," I promise breathlessly.

"Good. I want you to come over tonight."

"I'll be there."

"You go out first. I'll wait a few minutes," he commands dryly. I stare at him for a moment and catch my breath from our kiss before opening the door and going back into the light. I look around and see no one watching, so I walk back to the lunch area without worrying about suspicion. If that little rendez-vous confirmed anything, it's that this relationship is going to be as unpredictable as when you hear a song for the first time. Waiting in anticipation for the next note, pleasantly surprised as the melody plays out before you. I can only hope that this goes as smoothly as a song.

I sit with Kylie during history to avoid Ryan. She asks me one too many questions about my brother. I haven't told her that I know about them yet, but now that I do it's so obvious that she likes him. It's just plain weird for me, but I guess I can't really say anything. I did hook up with Troy, after all.

"Troy and Mason asked me if I wanted to join you guys for dinner. Dino's, right?" she asks as we walk towards the english wing.

"I...can't. I have a thing."

"A thing?"

"Yeah. I should get to class, I'll talk to you later alright?" I walk off before she can say anything else and walk towards my writing class. To my disappointment there's already some students at their desks. My eyes go to Harry's and he looks me up and down greedily before dropping his eyes to the papers in front of him. I head to the back to find my seat and watch as he reads whatever is on his desk in front of him. His forehead is slightly wrinkled in concentration and his expression is so serious. It's adorable. I pull out my phone as Madi walks into the classroom, taking her seat next to me.

To: Harry
You're cute when you're concentrating so hard.

I watch him while Madi babbles about some flirting experience of hers today. He reaches for his bag and takes out his phone, a small smile on his lips when he looks at the screen. He peers at me quickly before looking back down at his phone, then back to his papers. I get a reply and quickly open my message.

From: Harry
Behave, Savannah. You're going to get me all turned on before I start the lesson.

I bite my lip to keep myself from laughing at the message. Before I can respond he sends another.

Biting your lip now? I'm officially screwed. Or ready to be.

My mouth drops open and my face goes a tinge red at how forward that text is. I hide my screen and look up at his desk. He's not looking at me, but he's smiling down mischievously at his papers.

"What in the world are you smiling about?" Madi asks, trying to peek at my phone. I quickly stuff it bag in my bag and shrug in response. Harry gets up and starts the lesson then, walking around to the front of his desk as usual. His gaze lingers on mine a little longer than others and it makes my heart flutter every time. I don't know what this man is doing to me, but I'm definitely open to any of it.

When the bell rings I discretely place a note on his desk, saying that I'll be at his house as soon as I can for dinner. He winks at me as I walk out, dragged by my arm by Madison so I can't linger. I need to end things with Ryan before he thinks that I'm willing to continue with him. I find him by my car in the lot outside and mentally give myself a pep talk as I get closer.

"Hey," I greet shyly.

"Hey, any chance I could get a ride home?"

"Don't you have practice?"

He gives me a wierd look and shakes his head. "No, we have one tomorrow. Why?"

"Mason said-' Oh my goodness! He's totally with Kylie! "Nevermind. Let's go."

The ride home is uncomfortably silent and I can't help but wonder how I was ever interested in Ryan. Harry makes me feel so different and I love that. Ryan is just another high school guy. Sure, it would be a lot simpler but that doesn't mean it would be better.

"So, did you think about what I said?" he asks as I pull onto his street.

"I did."

"And?" I pull up to his house and put the car in park before turning slightly in my seat.

"Look, we had a thing over the summer and we had fun but, I just don't think this is going to go further than friends for us. I thought that I liked you but...there's no spark I guess."

"No spark?" he asks, completely surprised. "Are you serious?"

"I'm sorry."

He stays sitting for another uneasy minute and at this point I"m really not sure what to do or say. I kind wish he would just get out of the car and leave it at that.

"There's someone else, isn't there?" My mouth drops open and he sighs. "I'm not dumb, Sav. I can tell. You don't just suddenly not feel something anymore. Who is he?"

"I don't....there's no one else, Ryan. I just think we should stay friends."

"Right. I'll figure it out, don't worry. See you tomorrow."

He gets out without another word and I just stare as he walks up to and disappears inside his house. How could he possibly have figured that out? I need to get a lot better at this lying thing if I'm going to be able to do this. I quickly pull out of the driveway and make my way to Harry's apartment. I wait impatiently for him to buzz me in and when he does I practically sprint up the steps. I don't know why, but I'm freaking out. When I get to his apartment the door is already open, I'm assuming for me. I walk straight in and jump when I see someone I don't recognize.

"Who are you?" he asks.

"I'm...um who are you?" I respond.

"A friend of Harry's." Oh good, I do have the right apartment. "He's not here right now. You're the person I buzzed in I guess?"

"Uh, yeah. Do you know where he is? Or when he'll be back?" I ask nervously. He shrugs and walks over to me.

"Probably soon. He said he was on his way when I talked to him. I'm Liam, by the way." He holds out his hand I take it hesitantly. He has an accent similar to Harry's and he's quite tall. He's got a muscular build and he's actually quite handsome.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Savannah." Shit, should I have told him my real name? "You're a friend of Harry's?"

"Yeah, we went to Cambridge together. I moved here right after school."

"So, are you the friend he was staying with by the beach?"

"That would be me," he says smiling. So he definitely has money. "How do you know Harry?"

My stomach turns nervously at his question, one I have no idea how I'm supposed to answer. My saving grace walks in at that moment, waltzing in the door with his bag over his shoulder and a bag of groceries in his hand. He drops his keys and looks over to me and Liam, face a little paler at the realization.

"Savannah, I didn't think you'd be here so soon," he says nervously, scratching the back of his neck.

"I umm...I can go if you want."

"No, it's fine. You can stay." He steps forward and kisses me quickly to my surprise. He walks to the kitchen and Liam gives me a small smile. "What's up, Liam?"

"Well I came to see the new place, help you get settled. I have a feeling someone has already come to your aid, though." He winks at me and Harry laughs nervously as he sets the groceries down on the counter.

"Yeah, the place is pretty much ready. The bed came yesterday and I put that together. I have a few more boxes at your place that I can come get tomorrow if you want."

"No rush, mate. Just wanted to see the place. So, who's this pretty lady?" he asks, pointing to me. Harry smiles at me and nods his head for me to come to him. I walk across the floor and he tucks me under his arm.

"This is Savannah. My umm..." his brow furrows and he looks down at me questioningly. We haven't really talked about this but...

"His girlfriend," I finish for him, putting my arms around his midsection. He looks surprised for a second before joy takes over his features.

"Yes. My girlfriend."

"It's nice to meet you, Savannah. I should get going, I don't want to impose. I'll call you later this week Harry. The four of us should have dinner."

"Yeah, that sounds good. I'll talk to you later," Harry says, stepping away from me and following Liam to the door.

"It was great to meet you," he says to me. I nod and smile at him and he opens the door. Harry leans against it as they say their goodbyes. I hop up on the counter and wait for him to finish up. When the door swings shut he walks back over to me, standing between my legs with his hands on my thighs.

"So, girlfriend, what do you want to do tonight?" he asks, smiling adoringly at me. I rest my hands on his shoulders.

"Whatever you want to do, boyfriend."

Notes

so i decided that Liam would be the friend he was staying with and whatever because liam is the one that always wanted to move to america. he also rarely gets a main rold in harry fanfics for some reason....anywho. this was kind of a filler i guess....not too much happened but things are moving forward. next chapter will be their night together. things might get steamy...

if you guys have any suggestions or critiques please feel free to let me know! i love getting any kind of feedback and i really appreiciate it. i want to know that you guys are into the story!!
