Stars & Stripes

The lady who makes the food.

“Pizza.” Niall argued with the rest of his friends as they stood in the flat, trying to decide what to eat for lunch.

“You ate all the pizza.” Liam rolled his eyes. “Let’s just make sandwiches.”

“Fine,” He huffed before they all glanced at each other sheepishly. Their gaze moved to the fridge in unison and then to Olivia.

“What?” She questioned, afraid she had something on her face, “What is it?”

“Could you make us sandwiches?” Zayn asked with an innocent smile on his face.

“You don’t know how to make sandwiches?” Olivia asked exasperatedly.

“It’s complicated.” Louis whined, “There are so many condiments and steps. It takes a lot out of you.”

“And you’re a woman.” Harry grinned, “You should be in the kitchen anyway.”

Olivia snorted in disbelief.

“Pretty please?” Niall begged, looking up at the American with large puppy dog eyes.

“You said if we needed anything, you would do it for us.” Harry pointed out, not even trying to pout or plead like the rest of his band.

Olivia rolled her eyes with a huff and entered the kitchen area, pulling out the necessary items. The boys cheered and jumped onto the couches in the open living room where Olivia could plainly see them.

Niall popped in some video game and they were preoccupied for the fifteen minutes it took Olivia to make six lunches.

Olivia spent those fifteen minutes silently fuming, wanting to scold the boys for taking advantage of her and her job but she kept it to herself. Julia had been specific when she told Olivia to keep them happy. If they were happy, Olivia would be happy. So far, that was a load of shit.

Olivia wasn’t unhappy, though. There were fleeting moments in the seventeen hours she had known them when they’d made her smile or laugh despite herself. At the moment, she was a little annoyed but she knew they were just messing with her. And she was seriously skeptically on whether they were actually capable of doing anything besides singing, playing video games, and making jokes.

Olivia took in a deep breath before letting it go. There were probably going to be many times in the next three weeks that they irritated Olivia or pressed her buttons but she figured there would be just as many (if not more) times where they got her to laugh and live. Or—at least—she hoped secretly. Maybe loosening up wouldn’t be as bad a thing as Olivia predicted. Julia was usually right and had been looking out for Olivia for a long time. Olivia had to at least give the British Invasion a try.

“Lunch.” Olivia called. Simultaneously, all five boys jerked their head to her before stampeding into the kitchen without another look at their game. They struggled to grab the best looking lunch before slipping into the dining room.

Olivia could hear the scrapping of chairs against the hardwood as she stood in the kitchen, alone again. She sighed, picking up a piece of her sandwich to nibble on it when Harry’s shining face popped out of the den.

“You coming or what?” He demanded, “We’re waiting for you to eat!”

He slipped back in and Olivia couldn’t help the smile that she felt was becoming a regular occurrence. It wasn’t that Olivia never smiled; she was just a little more serious. Julia and her father complained about it all the time. She could almost hear Julia’s cries of happiness if she could see Olivia now, smiling, feeling warm inside at the thought of them waiting for her to sit with them to eat.

Olivia picked up her plate and entered the dining room. All five boys looked at her expectantly, hands folded in their laps, food untouched. Olivia plopped down in the empty seat next to Niall and Louis.

“You guys didn’t have to wait for me.” Olivia told them.

“The lady who makes the food gets to be the first to eat it.” Liam explained, “It’s only customary.”

Olivia bit her lip from smiling again as the boys watched her take a small bite of her sandwich.

Finally,” Niall moaned, almost shoving the entire sandwich in his mouth. The rest of them chimed in but restrained from moaning grotesquely the entire meal.

“This is so good.” Niall told Olivia with a full mouth of food. “It’s just like my mum’s.”

“Your mom makes a lot of turkey and cheese sandwiches?” Olivia asked skeptically. She had been to Ireland once when she was younger. It was a lot of cabbage, potatoes, and stew. Not many sandwiches. Olivia had survived the week on soup alone.

“No,” Niall admitted, “But if she did, they wouldn’t be as good as this.”

“Oi!” Louis feigned a serious face, “Don’t talk about your mum like that! Maura is a wonderful cook!”

They broke into hysterical laughter and—for a moment—Olivia forgot that she was only eating lunch with One Direction because she worked for them. It felt like she was one of the guys’.

But, it was temporary and once Olivia glanced at her watch, she knew it was time for them to get ready again.

“I don’t want to be the party pooper—” Olivia spoke up when they calmed down.

“Then don’t.” Liam said simply.

“Well, if you guys want to smell for your interview, then, by all means, keep eating.” Olivia raised her brows pointedly. Liam pouted and shoved the rest of his sandwich in his open mouth before standing up.

Olivia stood up too but was shoved down by Louis. She looked up at him questioningly.

“The lady who makes the food, doesn’t clean up the food.” He quoted like he had been told that his entire life.

Olivia was impressed as they all stood up, claiming their plates. Each had to walk by Olivia to get out the door. Since Louis was the closest to the door, he snagged Olivia’s empty dish and casually kissed her cheek, moving on before Olivia could say something.

As each boy marched out the dining room, they bent down and kissed her on the cheek, thanking her. Olivia could feel her cheeks heat up at their touch. She wasn’t overly emotional or particularly touchy. She enjoyed personal space and boundaries. These boys had obviously never heard of such ideals.

Harry was the last one out. He bent down and kissed her cheek just like the rest of them. Olivia felt her stomach flip around spontaneously.

“Thanks, love.” He grinned at her shocked expression and peaky complexion. Before she could respond, he disappeared out the swinging door like the rest of them.

Olivia sat in her chair, completely baffled by their strange traditions and mannerism.
