Always Expect the Unexpected

Chapter 8

Abbey’s POV

I looked at Sam and grinned. Today was the day that 1D were coming back from their tour and I was so excited. They were going to party, so I had to babysit a bunch of drunk people, but I didn’t care, I loved all of them, unless Allania came, then I’d be mad. Sam was going to introduce herself for once, and I was proud of her. We were setting up “Welcome Home!” decorations right when my mom walked in. Payton had made a friend and was at their house for the night so we wouldn’t mess up her soon to be schedule that started when she got home, some time within this week. The date wasn’t determined.

“Hey girls, you need any help?” she asked, setting down a bunch of beer and other type of alcohol in the kitchen. She also had a bunch of food.

“No, we just need to put up this last balloon and we’re done!” I said, letting go and watching it float up. The boys would be here in 6 more hours, so we had time to kill. I had already taken my picture for today, and was on my way to meet with a pregnancy modeling agency in a few minutes to see if they would accept me. I was going alone so I didn’t have any distractions. “Uh, Mom, watch a movie or something with Sam while I’m gone,” I sighed, opening the front door. I was dressed up in my casual school clothes, ripped jeans, a long sleeved shirt that went down past my belt line, and some converse shoes that were brand new, and a necklace and bracelet Niall sent me in the mail from New York.

My mom saluted me. “Aye aye captain!”

Sam and I bursted out in laughter. I ran downstairs so I didn’t run into anyone I knew and went outside to a cab that was already waiting for me. I had on really big sunglasses so no one could easily recognize me. The cab driver already knew where to go, so I didn’t have to talk. When I got to the agency I tossed some money at the cab driver and went inside. I followed the directory to the Maternity Room’s, as it said on the signs. I walked in and there was only one other woman there. She was fairly pretty, and thin, too. I smiled at her and noticed her belly was bigger than it looked. I sat down across the room from her. I guess this was a waiting room. I sat there for 5 minutes before a tall blonde walked out of a door and looked dead at me and waved at me to come with her. I followed her into a little office and sat down across from her at a desk. She smiled at me politely and then got straight to business.

“So, Paul told me you were looking for a modeling job, but there came a, complication with your body, is that so?” she asked me, saying complication like it was a foul, disgusting word.

I nodded my head. “Yes ma’am. I became pregnant no longer than 9 weeks ago.”

She smiled at me. I noticed how young she was, probably 21 by now. She still had a bit of childish roundness to her face. “Well, that’s why you’re here. We will take you in the back for a few photo’s, observe them, and call you back if we want you, or otherwise we will just have you sitting there, anticipating a call that will never call. Any questions?” she seemed too happy, almost like she was pretending to have a good day.

I shook my head. “No not really,” I smiled. She handed me a piece of paper to fill out my contact information, age, and diseases I have had. One of them was mono, which I thought was funny. I never had it, so I didn’t know what it was like. I remember Sam had it, and I visited her, but couldn’t enter her room so I didn’t get sick. I thought they were over reacting. I signed the paper and handed it over to the woman, and she smiled at me, glancing at it for a second. She got up and I followed her to another room with a white canvas with lights shining on it, and a camera man standing there with his camera, shooting some other girls who were about my age. When I walked in they all started whispering to each other. One of them ran up to me and looked really excited.

“Hi! My name is Jane,” she said, holding out her arms, expecting me to hug her or something.

I smiled. “My name is Abbey,” I said, hugging her.

“Don’t be silly, I already know that. You and Niall are so cute together!” she squealed, clapping. She turned and pointed to a brunette and a redhead staring at us, smiling. “Those are my friends, Belle is the red head and the brunette is my other friend Claire. Come and stand with us, please?” she gave me puppy dog eyes and I just could refuse. After standing with those girls for 30 minutes I was already getting their numbers and inviting them over for tonight. They were so excited, but they weren’t about meeting One Direction. They were more excited to meet my mom, who they were surprised was okay with everything that had happened to me.

“Our moms all kicked us out as soon as we got pregnant!” Belle sighed. She was really pretty, her hair reminded me of fire. She had soft, hazel eyes and freckles all over her face, on her cheek bones it was the most noticeable. Her teeth were perfect, and her nose was very fitting for her face. She was farther in her pregnancy than I was, and she was about my height. Her clothes were a little tight on her, but they still looked good. She had on dark blue jeans and a white belt and a brown shirt that had thin sleeves and hung loose-ish on her. Where her belly was it’s biggest it kind of stuck a little, but other than that she was really looking like a model. She had her hair down and it caressed her face like the ocean. Only, like it was on fire.

“Yeah! And then when I tried to ask my boyfriend to let me move in he slammed to door in my face!” Claire sighed. She was really pretty, too. She didn’t even look pregnant. She was thin, a little taller than me, and had a kind of hipster look to her. She wore glasses like the 3-D ones at the theater where you punch out the lenses, only hers were real prescription. She was wearing TOMS that were red, and blue pants, with a sweater that was designed like tribal print. She had really pretty dark blue eyes with green and golden accents in them, and some gray around her pupil. Her brown hair was kind of wavy, and she had two braids in it that wrapped around from her bangs (or fringe..) and they were pulled together in the back.

I frowned at them. “That really sucks. I guess I’m just lucky, or else I’d be on the streets, or living back in America where everyone thinks its a free for all, pick on Abbey all the time fest,” I sighed, mimicking Claire’s tone. No one noticed.

“Yeah, I guess that sucks. I’m really glad we got to meet you,” Jane smiled. She was pretty as well. She had blonde hair, but not too light. It had some brown in it, but you almost couldn’t see it. Her hair flowed down a little past her shoulders, and it was straight. She had freckles on her cheeks and she was just a little darker than Belle but lighter than Claire, and she had a cowgirl look. She had on a red flannel with a brown under shirt, light blue jeans, and some boots that looked like she should have been riding a horse. Her eyes were a light brown color with it getting darker and darker the closer you got to the pupil.

“Me too,” I grinned. It was my turn to get my pictures taken. I walked over and smiled at the camera man.

“Hello there. What’s your name?” he asked politely. He had a really sweet accent.

“My name is Abbey Heartman,” I smiled at him. Everyone in the room got quiet and I felt their eyes boring into me.

“Hello Abbey. Stand on that ‘x’ over there like this,” he said, standing in a weird position. I did as he said and stood exactly how he showed me. “Good,” he said, snapping the picture. “Now, sit down with your butt on the ‘x’, and do this,” he said, doing a weird pose.

I did what he said and smiled a little.

“Hey, don’t be shy, smile if you want to!” he said, and I did. He took the picture. “Okay, now stand up again, and we’re going to blow a fan on you. Stand like this and pretend to laugh, or laugh for real if you want,” he said and shrugged, showing me how to stand. The expression on my face made me laugh seriously hard, and I just kind of let go and laughed while looking at him, and he snapped the picture. “Beautiful!” he said, waving me over.

I looked at the pictures and smiled and nodded at him. He gave me a copy of them and I left the room and went home. I checked my phone and saw that I had to be at the airport in 10 minutes to pick up the boys in their personal limo. I met the limo outside and went to get them, and I was all alone. When I got to the airport I went to meet them outside of their terminal. I sat in a chair and texted Sam about the photo shoot.

To Samantha the panda: The photo shoot went pretty good I think! I got copies of the picture and I can’t wait to see if I get called back!

“Flight 1-0-3 has just landed!” the lady on the intercom said. “Go to terminal B-4 for flight 1-0-3!” she said.

I got up and walked across the lobby and waited in front of their actual terminal and Sam responded.

From Samantha the panda: Great. Are the boys back yet? And change my name from Samantha the panda, I hate it!

I giggled and changed her name to just Sam.

To Sam: They just landed, and I changed it to Sam, happy?

Just then I looked up and saw Niall walk out, looking around. I giggled and got up and ran to him, and when he saw me he held open his arms and pulled me in for a hug. I took a deep breath in my nose and took in his smell, which made me feel safe.

“Hello there beautiful!” he said loudly, picking me up and spinning me around like he did when he was leaving. He pulled me to his lips and planted a kiss on my lips. I pulled in for more, and then when we finally pulled away, I saw Harry standing there staring at us.

“Hey there stranger!” I said, smiling. I was hoping he still wasn’t mad.

“Hey Abbey, I missed you,” he said, giving me a stiff hug.

I greeted all of the boys with hugs and kisses on the cheeks and then Niall carried me out of the airport laughing. We got in the limo and drove home. When we got to the door I pushed everyone back and ran in before them, turning on the lights. They walked inside and were greeted by about 30 people, who were smiling and yelling “Surprise!”

They all laughed and walked in and just got to partying. I went to find my mom and Sam, but I didn’t make it because I ran into Claire, Belle, and Jane. I pulled them over to meet Sam and my mom.

“Who are they?” my mom asked, looking at them curiously.

“Mom, this is Claire, Belle, and Jane. I met the at the agency!” I grinned, hugging them as I introduced them. They never left each other. Not yet, anyway.

She waved at them and so did Sam. I could tell they were a little buzzed. I smiled and went to introduce the girls to 1D.

I went to Harry first. “Harry, meet my friends Claire, Belle, and Jane!” I said excitedly. I was hoping he found them attractive. He had his eyes on Claire. “Why hello there,” he chuckled, grabbing her around the waist gently. He kissed her firmly on the lips before nodding at the other girls. Allania came into the apartment and I went out onto the balcony and sat there with Belle, who had followed me out.

“So, you left? The party?” she said almost everything like a question.

I nodded. “Yeah, that girl who walked in, I don’t like her very much. It’s really personal. I’ll tell you some other time, okay?” I sighed, relaxing into the chair. It was the perfect temperature out here, and the breeze felt nice.

“Well, I’m gonna go in there and mingle. Will you be okay by yourself?” she asked, getting ready to get up.

“Yeah, I’ll be fine, go have fun!” I grinned.

She giggled and left me sitting there. Niall pushed his way through all of the people and stumbled outside with me. “Hey there,” he slurred. He was already drunk and the party just started. He had a beer in his hand and something I couldn’t see in the other.

“Hey!” I giggled at the expression on his face. He even looked drunk.

He held out his hand. “This is for you!” he slurred, dropping earring’s that matched the necklace and bracelet.

“Thank you, they are so beautiful!” I whispered, putting them on. My eyes were watering. I pulled him close and kissed him, and I tasted the alcohol on his lips. I almost pulled back right away, but I leaned into the kiss as his lips moved with mine. He pulled away and bit his lip. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Well, you see, the thing is..” he started. “You know what! F my drunk mind! I love you Abbey, I really do!” he said, spreading his arms out and looking up, spilling a little bit of beer. “I love Abbey Heartman everyone!” he yelled at the top of his lungs.

“Sit down and be quiet,” I hissed at him, a giggled breaking through.

He frowned at me. “Why can’t you be serious?” he pouted. His face looked so cute like that. I could tell he was joking.

“Gah! Niall, I can be serious, I promise!” I giggled, really wanting to pinch his cheeks. I reached out and did it.

“Okay, but be serious starting now, because you’re about to have to deal with a bunch of stuff within the next 5 minutes when the shots start going around,” Niall grumbled.

I stared at him for a second. Shots? I’m missing out on shots because I’m pregnant. I had to deal with drunk, vomiting people who don’t know how to handle themselves. I sighed and nodded at Niall. “Of course. But I need help, and my 3 friends are probably busy taking advantage of some drunk guys,” I pouted, trying to use my best puppy dog eyes.

Niall tried looking away from me but I could tell he couldn’t. “God dammit Abbey! Okay, but you need to get me some water first, okay?” he asked. I could tell he really didn’t want to.

I grabbed his hand and we ran through the house into the kitchen. I got him a glass of water while he arranged shots on a platter of different assorted drinks. He spilled a lot because he couldn’t see straight, but he managed. I took the platter from him and we both walked out of the kitchen and I held up the platter. The music changed to “Shots” by LMFAO and I grinned. “Anyone who wants a shot, come and get it!” I cheered, and Niall wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed my neck while people were taking the shots. I elbowed him in the ribs just a little and he pulled back, seeming to get the message. After all of the shots were taken some people went into the kitchen and got more. Niall and I sat on the couch talking and watching everyone, laughing at some of the drunken girls flirting with Harry.

“Abbey, do you hate me?” Niall suddenly asked. The alcohol was wearing off but he was still a little buzzed.

I starred at him for a few seconds and then shook my head. “Why on Earth would I hate you?” I asked him.

He shrugged. “I basically ruined your life by getting you pregnant. I can tell you aren’t happy.”

I laughed nervously. “I mean, sure I would much rather be getting drunk and dancing with you and my friends, and doing some other things that aren’t recommended during pregnancy, but I don’t hate you for that. I might get a modeling job as a pregnant woman, and I made 3 friends the moment I walked in for a photo shoot. I have the best boyfriend anyone could ask for, and a baby coming that I honestly can’t wait for,” I said, looking him dead in the eyes. Even when he was drunk his eyes were beautiful.

He nodded for a second, considering what I was saying, and then grinned at me. “Great!” he said, moving slowly towards me. Our lips touched and we kissed each other lightly and slowly, not caring if anyone saw. When we pulled away I felt a little light headed. I leaned in to hug Niall so he wouldn’t notice.

The rest of the night was pretty interesting, and when everyone left with a few people passed out here and there, Niall and I went off to bed and just slept. I woke up in his arms, while he was still asleep, and Payton standing at the edge of my bed.

“Abbey, get up!” Payton said really loudly.

“Oh Pooh Bear be quiet. He’s sleeping,” I gestured to Niall. I inched my way out of his arms and took Payton’s hand and we walked into the kitchen. I made her sit at the table with me while I went through my phone for a while.

“Abbey I want to get to know Niall,” she said sweetly. She looked exactly how she looked when I told her about Giant Squids. She really, genuinely wants to know more.

I sighed. “Maybe later, when he’s awake!” I smiled at her. I wasn’t feeling good today.

When my mom woke up I had coffee for her. I waited for Niall to get up before I let them make any noise because he really needed to sleep. My mom took Payton into the living room to watch the TV and I made them turn it down really low. I crept around the kitchen making a bunch of food, which included bacon, eggs, pancakes, french toast, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, cereal (no milk added yet), oat meal, toast, fruit, cookies, hash browns, sausage links, biscuits and gravy, and doughnuts. Of course, we already had a lot of these things made, but it was still nice of me. When I was finally done heating up/cooking all of the food Niall walked into the kitchen stretching his back. When he was done stretching his jaw dropped at the sight of all of the food.

“Did I die?” he asked, staring at all of the food. He smiled at me and kissed me quickly before sitting at the table. I sat down with him and Payton rushed in and sat down too. My mom decided to hobble in and sit down too, acting like an old lady. We all ate food, Niall eating almost 3 of everything, and us girls eating not even a third of what he ate. While we were eating Payton was shooting question after question at Niall. Things like “What’s your favorite color?” which he answered with “Green,” and shoved food in his mouth. The questions continued, and started getting personal, questions even I wouldn’t have asked. Things like “What color are your underwear?” would have been funny, but she asked him “What was the date you got your braces?” and “What was the sate they were taken off?” and things like that. I stared at my little sister, not knowing she would fan girl like this. Even Niall was taken aback.

“Uh, Pooh Bear, you can calm down a little, okay?” I said quietly.

“Wait! One more question!” Payton screamed. She took a deep breath and then looked Niall dead in the eyes. “Why do you like my sister?”

Niall responded with out thinking, “Well, she’s really nice, funny, and she can cook. She eats about as much as I do on a daily basis, and I just feel happy when ever I see her. Plus, I get butterflies in my stomach when I’m with her, and I feel like no body can compare to her, ever,” he said, and he got a distant look on his face that was kind of dreamy. He looked at Payton and smiled.

Payton nodded and smiled. “Okay, you’re good enough for my sister,” Payton said, grinning at me.

I laughed. “Payton, don’t you think I have good enough judgement for that kind of thing?” I asked.

She shook her head. “Nope,” and she took a muffin and ran out of the room.

Niall laughed. “Ohhhh, she got you!” he joked. I kissed him lightly on the lips and walked out of the room, very proud of my little sister for trying to take care of me.

3 months later

I walked out of my room, smiling at Niall and putting my hand on my baby bump. It had gotten pretty big and we were going to the doctor today for another check up. Niall had his hand on my lower back to support me. I had been wearing sweat pants and baggy clothes so I didn’t have to buy any pregnancy clothes since I wasn’t planning on getting pregnant again. Niall and I had a routine of rubbing various oils on my stomach so I don’t have stretch marks. I am now 6 months pregnant, almost 7, and I also have a great job as a pregnant model. I have pregnancy safe workouts to stay fit and not harm the baby. Niall and I used to still go on our morning runs, but now it hurts to run with the baby and it makes me sick.

“You sure you don’t need help?” Niall asked me while I was bending over to fix my shoe while it was on my foot.

I smiled at him. “I’m fine. I’m not that pregnant yet. I can still bend and not pop,” I said, groaning as I stood up. My back was bugging me. The doctor said I probably would end up with back problems because my body was so small and the baby would get so big.

We got into the cab, went to my doctor, and signed in. The paps were there, as usual, and snapped pictures of us. I even stopped and smiled for some of them while Niall was trying to walk inside. I laughed and followed him in and then we went into the waiting room.

I noticed Niall was staring at me so I finally looked up. “Hi there stranger,” I smiled at him.

“Abbey, are you feeling okay?” he asked me.

I nodded my head. “I feel fine, why do you ask?”

“Well, you don’t look like you feel good. You’re a little flushed. Anyway, you smiled at the paps, rather than avoiding them like you usually do,” he said, looking genuinely worried.

I smiled at him. “Niall, I’m fine, I promise.”

“Abbey Heartman?” my name was called.

I stood up and grabbed Niall’s hand and pulled him with me. We followed the woman down the hall holding hands and into a room.

“The doctor will be here shortly. Put this on,” she said, hanging me a gown, “and just sit down and relax.”

When the woman left I got undressed and re-dressed. I had just sat down next to Niall when the doctor walked in.

“Hello Abbey, lets just talk about how you’ve been feeling and then move to the Ultrasound room. So, has your morning routine changed at all? Any vomiting, nausea, dizzyness, back pain, loss of appetite?” she listed a bunch of things and I smiled.

“Well, I have been feeling queazy, and dizzy, and my back has been bugging me quite a bit,” I said. Niall suddenly looked nervous.

“Well, that’s completely normal. Does it interrupt your day at all? Make it hard for you to live comfortably?” she asked.

I shook my head. “No not really. I’ve been just fine, actually.”

Niall looked slightly more relaxed now. “Can we check the baby, please?” he asked desperately. I could almost feel how anxious he was.

“Of course, come with me,” she nodded, both of us following her. When powered up the Ultrasound while a nurse rubbed some liquid on my stomach to make it orange. When put gel stuff on the ultrasound machine and rubbed it all over my stomach while looking for the baby. Finally she found it and smiled. “You keep refusing to let me tell you the age of the child. Are you sure you don’t want to know it?” she asked me. I looked at Niall and he shrugged.

“Well, go ahead, tell us!” I smiled, excited. I couldn’t wait to start thinking of baby names right away.

She smiled at us for a second and then said, “It’s a boy!” and grinned at us.

I clapped my hands. “Yay!” I said, and looked over at Niall, who was also smiling.

“Well, that little boy will also be a little gentleman,” Niall said softly. He looked like he was already imagining the future with our soon to be son.

After the rest of the check up was done, Niall and I were alone in a car with Paul. He was talking to Niall about guys stuff and things I liked to call “Paul Stuff,” and when we were halfway home I frowned at Niall. “Niall, you wont be here for the baby,” I sighed. I was worried the baby might end up messed up because it will only have 1 parent for most of the time it is growing up.

“Sure I will babe, as much as I can. I’m sure within the next year we can take a long break from touring and I will be here taking care of the baby the whole time,” he said, pinching my nose.

That made me feel a little better. I rubbed my stomach. “It’s okay baby boy, we’ll take good care of you.”
