Crash Into Me

you make the first impression

Halie Graham sat at the train station quietly with her favorite book in her hand and her suitcase beside her. She turned the pages absent-mindedly, only keeping her ears open for her train to be called, while other people chatted and gossiped away. This was Halie's first time in England and she could barely contain her excitement. Although it was foreign, it seemed very much like home to Halie, and she wasn't quite sure why yet.

"Y'know so I tolds him, I says, 'you bettah straight'n up mista or I'm kickin your arse out' and he just rolls his eyes he does," a young woman states angrily to the woman next to her. Halie let out a small smile at the woman's accent. She always wished she had a different accent than the American one she was born with.

"Shut up!" the other woman yelled, "what a wanker!" Halie let out a little giggle and closed her book, listening to the women talking was much more interesting.

"You're tellin' me! So then, me mum comes over and oh y'know 'ow she is, always pickin' at me about sumfin'-" the woman's voice was cut off by the intercom, letting everyone know of the train's arrival. Halie reluctantly got up, grabbed her things, and began walking towards the platform, secretly hoping that the women were on the same train as her.

England just smelled different than America. The colors were different, the people, the animals- everything was different. Everyone seemed to have a small smile on their faces as they walked onto the platform and Halie wondered where they all were going. An elderly man leaned against a brick column and Halie imagined that he was going home to his wife of fifty years with a surprise tucked inside his jacket. Next to him, a young woman with a protruding stomach stood, instinctively rubbing over her sweater, and Halie imagined that she was going to her boyfriend's house, who had just called her and told her that he was finally ready to be a father. And Halie's favorite, a young man about her age, stood scrolling through his phone, and she began to imagine that he was going home to his parents house after finishing college, and they were going to have a big party for him.

Halie got so caught up in the other people that she was the last person on the train, and had difficulty finding somewhere to sit. After walking for a few minutes, she saw the young boy with his phone. "Do you mind if I sit here?" she asked politely, grabbing his attention. He looked up at her with the greenest of eyes and messy, curly hair.

A smile formed on his lips as he said, "my pleasure." Halie sat, trying to get over how attractive the boy was, and pulled out her book.

A few minutes passed and then the boy spoke again. "Look at us, one with a book and the other with a phone. I can tell who's smarter already," he said. Halie noticed that he talked slow, but had a great deal of thought behind his words. She blushed and closed the book.

"My phone isn't working over here so I'm left to this," she replied.

"You're from America, yeah?" the boy asked, tugging at his bottom lip with his teeth.

"Yep, I'm from Florida," Halie said, her southern accent coming out when she pronounced 'Florida'. The boy chuckled and ran his fingers through his hair.

"So what brings you all the way to London?" he asked.

"My aunt lives here and I'm gonna live with her for a while," Halie replied. "This place is so beautiful. I'm excited to be here."

"Yeah England's a lovely place I suppose," he nodded. "I'm Harry, by the way." He extended his hand and Halie shook it, admiring him.

"I'm Halie," she said.

"Beautiful name," Harry said with a smile. "Beautiful girl."

Halie had been called beautiful before by her mother, and her best friend, but never by a boy. She didn't really know what to do or say, but she felt her cheeks growing warm.

"Thank you," she managed to barely whisper out. Harry smirked and looked back at his phone. Halie glanced over and noticed his background, which was Harry with four more boys in very nice suits. "You guys look handsome," she blurted out before she could realize how creepy she sounded.

Harry looked up, confused. Halie covered her face with her hands and let out a sigh. Harry caught on and chuckled slightly. "Well thank you," he said. "These are my best friends."

"Four best friends? Goodness gracious," Halie said. Harry couldn't stop smiling at her accent, and Halie began to feel self-conscious as he stared at her. "What are their names? If you don't mind me asking..."

"That one right there's Louis, the blonde one is Niall, there's Liam, and the bronzed adonis is Zayn," Harry said, affection dripping from his voice. Halie smiled and her eyes scanned over the boys once more before going back to her book.

"How'd you all meet?" she asked. Harry was quiet for a moment before speaking.

"Uh, it's kind of complicated. We all just kind of met," he replied. Halie could tell there was something more but she didn't prod.

For the next few minutes the two talked about Harry's friends, Halie's town, and everything in between. Before they knew it the train was pulling into the station and it was time to get off. Halie sat, waiting for the rest of the passengers to exit. She and Harry stood up when it was their time to go, and walked onto the platform.

"Real good to meet you," Halie said with a smile, turning around to look at Harry. He ran his fingers through his hair and gave her a bright smile. Halie turned but stopped when she felt Harry grab her hand, and felt a piece of paper slip through her fingers.

"If you ever want to have lunch or a tour around the city, call me," he said, then walked away. Halie couldn't believe that she had gotten his phone number and she stood there for a moment, talking it all in. With a smile on her face she walked to the front of the station where her aunt was waiting for her. Halie was excited to be in London, and she knew it was going to be a great experience, but with Harry's number in her hand, she knew it would be something unforgettable.
