Harry’s POV:

I paced as I awaited the girl. Who am I kidding? It’s been an hour and she’s not here. She’s not coming. I scared her off with that whole paper thing, didn’t I? I’m so pissed at myself for getting too attached. I should’ve known I’d scare her away. I should’ve known she wouldn’t want help, just like Mum.

Suddenly I heard a twig snap. My head whipped towards the sound to find a girl stumbling towards me.

“Harry,” she sobbed and fell to her knees.

“Oh my God.” I walked over and squatted down to examine her now clearly visible injuries. Dry blood was smeared from her pale pink lips to her chin, her left eye was puffy and purple, and her swollen nose was gushing blood. “What happened, Mercy?”

She just sobbed and shook her head. Whoever it is, she’s protecting them or maybe she’s just protecting herself. Either way, she came to me for help and it's now my top priority to give her exactly that.

I pulled my phone out of the pocket of my skinnies and dialed the number of the person I trusted most. “Perrie? I need your help, but you have to promise not to tell a soul about what you see tonight.”

“Haz, you’re scaring me,” her voice filled my ear.

“I didn’t do anything. It’s just my friend, she needs help and I don’t know who else to turn to.”

She sighed, “Okay, bring her over. What am I going to need to get ready?”

“Your mum and her expertise.” Her mum is a trauma nurse, so she has experience in working with far worse situations than this.

“That bad?”

I glanced at Iris’s wounds again, “Not as bad. I’m on my way.” I hung up my phone and looked into Iris’s teal eyes. “I know you don’t want to be touched, but for right now you’re going to have to trust me. Can you do that? I won’t hurt you, I promise.”

She sniffled and nodded. Okay, she trusts me. I slowly and cautiously scooped her off the ground and allowed her to adjust in my arms before I stood to my feet. Before I knew it, she wrapped her arms around my neck and buried her head into my shoulder. She needed comfort so badly and I was the only one who’d give it to her. My heart breaks for this girl.

I held her tightly as I sped to my car. I know it’s not an emergency, but I need her to know I’m taking this seriously. She needs to understand that she shouldn’t have to fear everyone. Not all of us are bad people. My dad is, Scott is, and Andrew is, but not all of us are. She’s safe with me.

Once we reached my car, I opened the passenger side and gently placed her in. My eyes didn’t leave her’s as I buckled her in, trying to reassure her she’s in good hands. Then, I closed her door and headed to my seat.

“Trust me,” I whispered before driving to Perrie’s house.

Once we got there, I scooped Iris out of the car and back into my arms, closing the car door with my foot.

Perrie must’ve heard my car door since she was already running out to help. “What happened?”

“I don’t know,” I shook my head. At the moment, that’s the least of my worries.

“Mum!” Perrie ran into her house.

Her mom walked out, “Harry, get her to the guest room. All of my stuff is already there.”

“You’re okay,” I whispered to the whimpering girl as I walked into the house and up the stairs. “You’re okay.”

Iris’s nose isn’t broken, just badly bruised. It turns out she has a giant bruise on one of her ribs as well. That one I didn’t see until a while ago when she lifted her shirt to show Perrie’s mum. I can't believe someone would do this to her. Now, she is resting in the guest bed, staring straight at the ceiling.

I nodded to Perrie's mum, "Thanks Mrs. Edwards."

"No problem Darling. Good night," she grinned before exiting the bedroom.

“Who is she?” Perrie whispered under her breath as she eyed Iris.

“You don’t know?” She shook her head. “Her name is Iris Mercer.” She still looked confused. I sighed, “Deaf Freak?” I've done my research...the whole school refers to her as that. It's rather disgusting how rude people are.

Perrie’s eye widened, “That’s her?”

“Uh, yeah.”

Perrie frowned, “She’s not what I expected. Riley described her much worse.”

“Ugly?” I rolled my eyes.

She nodded, "Yeah, and I'm guessing today she was picked on?”

I groaned, “And yesterday, and the day before that, and all the other days of school. It seems like every day just gets worse for her.”

Perrie hugged my arm and leaned her head onto my shoulder as she looked over at Iris, “I’ve never even seen her before, I feel so bad.”

“Me too,” I rubbed her arms. “Please don’t tell anyone about this, not even Riley. She’d hate me.”

“Well since you’re doing it for a good cause,” she joked.

I wrapped my arms around Perrie’s shoulders and gave her a big hug, “Thank you for all the help and for letting us stay here tonight.”

“No problem at all. I won’t even tell Riley you’re sharing a room with Iris, I promise,” she leaned her head back and winked at me. “Now get some sleep, Haz.”

“Will do,” I smiled as she walked out the door. After shutting the door behind Perrie, I made my way over to Iris. “What happened?”

“I can’t tell,” she whispered. “Please don’t make me tell.”

I sighed and sat down at her legs, “I won’t. I’m just worried about you, Mercy.”

“Why?” she sat up so she was closer to me. “Why do you care so much?”

I stared down at my hands, “I guess it’s just nice to help someone for a change.”

She flashed me a partial smile of appreciation and pointed to my shirt, “I’m sorry I got blood on your shirt.”

I looked down at the bloodstained shirt, “It’s alright.” I stood up from the bed and removed the shirt. “I have others here.” I walked over to the dresser that sat in the room and pulled out one of my clean shirts.

“You come here a lot, don’t you?”

“Yeah, I do.” I placed the new shirt over my head and kicked off my boots. “It’s either this or go to Riley’s.”

“Oh,” she turned her head away from me. Is it just me or did it get tense in here?

I furrowed my brows, “Oh?”

She shrugged, “Cool, whatever.”

“Mercy, is there something I should know?”

She hesitated but shook her head, “No. Riley just doesn’t like me along with everyone else.”

“Well, I won’t let her do anything to you,” I grinned.

She forced a grin on her face but it turned back into a frown. “I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight.”

I moved closer to her, “Do you still trust me?” She nodded. I climbed onto the other side of the bed and got under the sheets, only to feel her jump. “It’s okay. I promise, I’m not going to do anything you’re not comfortable with. I’m only going to lie next to you, I won’t touch you. I'm just right here to keep you safe.”

Normally I sleep in my boxers only, but I know Iris would definitely not be comfortable with that. It's not very comfy laying in my skinny jeans, but I'm willing to suck it up for her sake.

She didn’t move a muscle for a little bit, but finally turned her body so we were nose-to-nose, “Thank you Harry, for everything.”

“You’re welcome,” I smiled.

She put the fingertips of her flattened hand against her chin then brought it outwards towards me.

“What does that mean?”

“It means both ‘thank you’ and ‘you’re welcome’,” she smiled.

I copied her gesture, “Well thank you and you’re welcome.”

She scrunched her nose, “I have a confession.”

“And what’s that?” I raised my brows.

“I don’t know many signs, just the basics.”

I laughed, “Then we’ll have to learn them together.”

“Deal,” she whispered as her eyes slowly closed.

I did it, I got her to put a lot of trust in me. She let me touch her in her vulnerable state. This girl shatters my word when I see how broken she is. I wish I knew who did this. Was it Scott? Was it Andrew? Maybe some girls that don’t like her? Whoever it was, I wish I was there to stop them. I can’t help but feel like I need to stay by Iris’s side. I want to protect her, I want to keep her safe. This is going to seem like an impossible task seeing as anyone she puts trust into winds up screwing her over, but I wouldn’t do that to her, not when I know exactly how horrible that feels.

I know what it’s like to put so much faith in one person and for it to only get ripped away. I loved and trusted someone with my life, and one day she just left. It made my angry, frustrated, and confused all at once. The overwhelming emotions made me do stupid things and lose many friends. Why did you have to leave me? Why did you have to do this to me? I need you.

Notes

I found that gif by accident and almost died. I didn’t know he knew how to sign ‘thank you’. I was just looking for a gif with that sign and there Harry was signing it. Haha what a happy accident.

Anyways, DOUBLE UPDATE! Exciting right? Haha thanks for the comments. Subscribe and vote if you haven't already. I'll be updating again tomorrow night. Love you all <3

@ReignOn
To be honest, I had no idea where I got the poodle shaped birthmark idea until now haha. I knew I heard it from somewhere, but I was never able to figure out where. Also, there are tons of people who get locks for their doors to lock on the outside. I babysat for a family that had locks on their kid's doors to lock them in whenever they were in a timeout.
