It Haunts Me
What's Missing
“Mum?” I yelled as I walked through the front door of my house. I had just gotten home from school and needed to start my project right away.
“In my office, sweetie!” My mum’s angelic voice rang through the hallway. I walked to the third door on the left and saw her seated in her chair with multiple booklets opened up in front of her. Her dark hair was piled in a bun on top of her head, her glasses adorned her face, and she had a look of frustration on her face.
“I need your help with one of my assignments,” I told her as I sat down in a spare chair.
“Yeah? What’s the assignment about?” She asked as she lifted her head up to look at me. A smile slowly etching its way onto her face.
“My English teacher gave an essay assignment. We are to write a 3-4 page essay on something we want to know more about…I want to know more about dad,” I said, trailing off at the end.
“Aaliyah…we’ve been over this before,” My mum told me as she pressed her fingers to her head.
“I know that, Mum. But I’m sixteen now and I deserve to know who my father is and what he was like! You don’t understand how hard it is to hear my friends talk about all the fun times they have with their dad’s. All I have is you! I have nothing of my dad!” I yelled at her, as tears of frustration rolled down my cheeks.
“I just don’t want you to get your hopes up, or to start hating him, dear,” My mum told me as she stood up and pulled me into a hug.
“I don’t care. I just want some sort of knowledge of who my father was and what he was like.”
“Alright. Tell you what, you go change into some comfy clothes and I’ll make us some tea. Then meet me in my room and I’ll tell you everything you want to know about your father,” my mum told me as she pushed me out of her office. I ran up to my room and quickly changed out of my school uniform and put on my pajamas. I ran into my mum’s bedroom and jumped into her king sized bed and climbed underneath the covers. After a few moments my mum walked through the door, carrying two mugs of tea. She set hers down on her nightstand and handed me mine before climbing into her bed next to me.
“What would you like to know first?” My mum asked as she turned to face me.
“Tell me how you two met!” I exclaimed and got comfortable.
