Breathe

I close my eyes, I feel like I’m going to drift off again, quickly I open them, I’m scared that if I fall back asleep I wont wake up.

“ We should call Tia and your parents, let them know you’ve woken up” He says warily, he looks beat.

“ Harry you look tired” I narrow my eyes at my boyfriend.

“ Why did you come back?” I whisper

“ Why do you think?” He snaps outraged, gesturing to me in the hospital bed.

“Oh”

“ You’re my girlfriend Nina”

“ Why is the nurse calling me Ms. Styles?” I laugh even though it makes my chest rattle; I need to calm down the tension forming between us.

“ I told them we were engaged” He smiles revealing his perfect teeth

“ Why?” I murmur

“ So I could stay at all times” He gives me a crooked smile, and tries to hide the pain in his voice.

“ I was so scared” He adds sadly

“ I’m so sorry” I look down to my knotted fingers

A tall woman walks into the room; she looks to be late 50’s and is wearing large blue earrings.

“ Nina, you’re awake, lets check your vitals” Harry puts his hands up in defeat and walks to the back of the room as the doctor attempts to work around him. She checks my blood pressure and my weight and everything that I’m assuming is important.

“ We’re going to subscribe you to a pain killer to help with your leg, we anticipated more surgeries but your coma has helped repair all the internal injuries so I don’t see surgeries in your recovery process. We did an operation when you arrived here which is why you may feel stitches and pain directly on your stomach, how do you feel right now Nina?”

“ Thirsty and hungry and sore, really sore” I answered honestly

“ Well I can get you some water, and if you’re going to have food it needs to be light, no solids, just liquids understand?” her eyes looked from me to Harry who nodded quickly.

“ I’ll see you tomorrow, try to get some rest” She glares at Harry who once more nods his head.
“Nina, call your parents” he reminds me before producing an iPhone from his pocket and handing it to me. Quickly I dial Tia’s number

“ Harry, what’s up?” she sounds sad, and tired.

“ Hi” I manage to say without crying

“ NINA YOU’RE AWAKE?” I heard her start crying and it broke my heart

“ Yes I just woke up, I’m okay please don’t cry”

“ We’re on our way, talk to mom please she’s freaking out” I hear shuffling through out the other end

“ NINA BABY IS THAT YOU”

“ Hi mom, I’m okay” I hear her also break down into tears

“ Oh baby I was so scared, we’re on our way okay I love you”

“ I love you too”

I handed the phone back to Harry, he still looks sad.

“ Babe, I’m fine trust me” I look up to his hurt green eyes

“ Nina, you have no idea how scared I was” I put my hand up to his cheek; he closes his eyes leaning into my fingers.

“ The thought of losing you” he whispers

“ You’re not losing me Harry, I promise”

“ Nina” My mom rushed through the door and straight to my bed

“ Hi mom”

“ Oh darling” she walks over and hugs my head gently

“ NINA” Tia sprints through the door nearly knocking over Harry to get to my side, my dad followed in slowly.

“ Nina don’t ever do that again” he scolded me

“ I’m sorry I’m so sorry” I embraced all the hugs my family had to offer.

“ Did the doctor say when you could get out of here?” My dad asks

“ No, but I hope soon” I notice Tia crying at the end of my bed

“ Hey, I’m fine” I suppress a small smile

“ Nina, you’re my best friend, my sister, I thought you were gone” I could hear the pain in her voice

“ We all did, not to mention poor Harry has been a wreck the past week almost” my dad added angrily, I look over to Harry; who gives me a weak smile.

My family’s’ visit was cut short when the nurse spotted them; it was too late for visitors. They all said their goodbyes before leaving Harry and I alone again.

“ I should probably call Lou and let him know you’re alive” he smirked at me before ringing Lou and stepping a couple feet away from me. I’m really tired, which is odd since I’ve basically been asleep for a week, the thought is rather unnerving.

“ Yes she’s awake, no you can’t talk to her, because she’s tired, well you and El can come talk to her tomorrow, yes she’s alright, yes I’m alright, no I’m staying here. Yeah love you too bye” Harry put his fingers on the bridge of his nose and flashed an amused smile.

“ What” I questioned

“ Lou wanted to talk to you”

“ Oh? Why”

“ Apparently I’ve been acting strange”

“ Well how have you been acting?” I struggle to keep my eyes open

“ I haven’t left your side once since I got here” his eyes flashed down to the floor.

“ Why” I stare into his confused green eyes.

“ Because I- I lo- I’m your boyfriend” His eyes widened

“ I can’t lose you Nina,” he whispers, the butterflies forming in my stomach started taking over, but with all my injuries it was a little painful.

“ Babe I’m sorry but I’m falling asleep”

“ Alright love, goodnight” He walked closer to me and pressed his lips against my head before walking back to the chair in the corner.

“ Harry”

“ Yes?”

“ Come sleep with me” I pout, opening the sheets inviting him in.

“ I can’t, you have to many injuries”


“ Please, this bed is too big”

“ Nina I don’t want to hurt you” I could tell he was thinking about it

“ Please Harry, I miss you” I know that will get to him

“ Fuck it” Harry got off the chair and quickly kicked off his shoes then gently slid into the bed with me.

“ This is a pretty big bed for such a tiny person” He says quietly in my ear

“ Cuddle me Harry” I try to wrap his arms around me, which is a challenge with two restrained limbs, he sighs then wraps his arm tenderly around my waist with barely any pressure.

“ I missed you baby,” he says into my hair

“ Please don’t ever leave me like that again,” he adds, his attempt to hide the hurt in his voice wasn’t working very well.


“ I promise,” I say sleepily
