Best Friends Forever

Chapter 9 - Skyscraper

Iris' P.O.V.
After we said goodbye to Niall and Lucie, Harry handed me a helmet. I looked confused. "What are we going to do?", I asked. Harry pointed at a white motorbike which was standing in front of us. "It's ours. All day long", he said smiling. I put the helmet over my head, sat down on the motorbike and wrapped my arms around Harry's waist. I let my head rest on his back. I felt so safe here. "Are you ready?", Harry asked with a sweet smile before starting the engine. "Definitely", I answered smiling back. I've always wanted to sit on a motorbike and right now I am, with the prince of my dreams in front of me. I don't have the prince of my dreams on a white horse, but on a white motorbike. And this was so much better. "Where are we going to?", I asked him while we were crossing through Chicago. Harry drove pretty fast and normally I would have been afraid, but not now. I just knew Harry for 2 days, but it felt like forever. Kissing him was absolutely the best thing in the whole world, even though we barely knew each other. He just attracted me. So much. And right now, being on this motorbike with him, felt like it was Harry and me against the rest of the world. Being with Harry felt safe, but at the same time it was also a big adventure. "Just wait and see", Harry said and I just knew he was smirking. After we had driven through the whole city, Harry stopped in front of a skyscraper. I took off my helmet and put it under my arm. I looked up to see it was a huge building. "C'mon", Harry said and waved at me while he was at the entrance already. I followed him as he walked to the elevator. When we were standing in the elevator, I looked at all the floor buttons. This skyscraper had 108 floors. I felt I got this feeling in my stomach. It felt a bit like butterflies, but they weren't. It was a feeling of anxiety. I had the feeling we were going to the top and it got confirmed when Harry pressed the button with the word 'roof' on it. Within a minute the doors dinged open and we stepped out in the open area. In the middle of the rooftop there was laid out a picnic blanket. Around the picnic blanket there were candles and flowers standing. The candles weren't even burning, but it still looked nice. It was just like in my dream about Harry and me together in London. But in my dream I wasn't afraid of heights, and unfortunately, in reality I was. The view was beautiful though. It was so quiet and peaceful up here and so different than walking through the streets of Chicago. I really liked Chicago, but I found the city a bit too busy. But when you're being up here, you will think differently about it. Harry grabbed my hand to take me to the picnic, but it was like I was frozen because I couldn't move. He looked at me. "What's wrong?", he asked with his cute smile. "I'm afraid of heights...", I stuttered. I felt my cheeks started to blush. This was so embarrassing. "You don't have to be ashamed for that", he said. He grabbed my hand again and took me to the edge of the rooftop. I closed my eyes immediately. Even though there was a rail on the edge and nothing could happen to me, I was still scared. "Open your eyes", he said while pulling me closer to him. I slowly did what he said. "Look down right now", Harry said slowly. "What?", I squealed out of anxiety. "Don't worry. You can't fall and I got you", Harry said while holding me really close. And again, he made me feel safe. He just had this calm aura around him. Slowly I looked over the rail to the ground beneath us. I saw tiny little cars everywhere. I started to freaked out, but slowly I became more and more calm. When you get a bit used to it, it wasn't so scary at all actually. We were standing there for 5 minutes looking over the skyline of Chicago. Chicago had so many skyscrapers. I would have never expected I would be standing on a skyscraper in my life. But I exceeded myself. Harry and I walked back to the picnic blanket. “Thank you”, I said smiling when we sat down. “It’s a beginning. Just wait till later”, he said with a grin. I got curious but decided not to ask further. “I hope you like picnicking”, he said smiling. “Well it’s a bit different than I am used to, but I like it”, I said laughing. “Chicago is such an amazing city”, I thought aloud. “Yeah, it definitely is. I really like Chicago”, Harry responded. We talked a lot about ourselves while enjoying our delicious picnic lunch. I told him about the past 3 years which were the best and the worst years of my life. “And, is your mom doing better again?”, Harry asked me in all concern. “Nah not really. It goes with ups and downs. But it will never be the same like it used to be. You just have to get used to this situation. It’s always hard. You have so many things to take into account. In the beginning I was having really hard times trying to deal with it, but there’s just no help for it. It will be like this for the rest of my mom’s life.”, I answered Harry slowly. “I am so sorry”, he said a bit shocked. “It’s okay”, I said to him with a little smile. I felt some tears stinging behind my eyes. I talked about all this as less as possible and when I did, I always got emotional. A little tear left my eye and at that moment Harry looked at me. We were sitting in front of each other, but now he came up to me and sat beside me. “Ssh, it’s going to be alright”, he reassured me. “How?”, I whispered desperately. “Like this”, he whispered back and before I knew it his lips were pressed against mine. I smiled from the in- and outside and kissed him back. It was just like yesterday; perfect. I felt Harry smiling too and it made me feel even more happier than I already was. I was sure Harry was the one I had always been waiting for. Kissing Harry seemed like the rest of the world just disappeared around me. We pulled apart after a few minutes and Harry touched his forehead to mine. He smiled and his eyes were intense, but in a good way. I rested my head on his shoulder and like this we were sitting there for a while. We ate the last things from the picnic in all quietness. It wasn’t an awkward silence. No, not at all. It was just one of those silences you have with people you know for a really long time and trust through and through. “I want to show you something”, Harry said to me when there was nothing left from the picnic anymore. He stood up and pulled me upright. We walked back to the elevator and Harry pressed the button with the number 103 on it. The elevator stopped at the 103th floor and we stepped out. “Ohmygod”, I whispered. We were standing just a few metres away from the famous Skydeck of Chicago. “Are you ready?”, Harry asked me. Without waiting for an answer he took me to the Skydeck itself. It was a really clear day, but it was also a bit windy. I was standing on the glass balcony and I looked down. Under me I saw a street full of cars. At that moment a strong wind passed by and I squealed. The whole building was swaying and you could feel the wind here so much. Just after that Harry grabbed my waist from behind. It felt so comfortable. It was really crowded here and many people looked at us. There were only a few girls freaking out. I was sure Harry would let them take a picture with him later. “Look”, Harry said, still with his arms around me, and pointed in front of me, “There’s Lake Michigan and on the right there’s Michigan and on the left Wisconsin.” “Have you been here before?”, I asked Harry. “Yeah about a year ago me and the lads went up here”, he responded. “It’s pretty awesome”, I said while looking over Chicago and so much further. Harry agreed nodding. “And, is your vertigo gone already?”, Harry asked joking. “Ha ha ha, really funny”, I said while slapping him. I looked behind me and I saw those girls were still standing there. “Haz, you’ve got fans”, I whispered. Harry turned around to face the girls. They started freaking out even more. “Do you want a picture?”, Harry asked smiling. They answered by exclaiming. He laughed. “Shall I take your picture?”, I asked the first girl who walked over to Harry for a picture. A few minutes later I had taken all the girls’ pictures. It made me smile how cute these girls were. Harry and the lads definitely have the best fans in the world. One of the girls came up to me. “Hey, I just made this polaroid of you and Harry”, she said a bit shy and showed me the polaroid. I looked at it and smiled really big. It was a picture of Harry holding my waist from behind when we were on the glass balcony. It was a beautiful picture. “What’s your name?”, I asked her. “Vanessa”, she answered. “Hi Vanessa, I’m Iris”, I said to her. I tapped Harry on his shoulder who was still chatting with the other girls. “Harry, look. This girl Vanessa made this picture of us”, I said while showing it to him. He smiled really big as well. “You can have it”, Vanessa said with a smile. “Really? That’s so sweet”, I responded smiling. “Can I have a picture with both of you?”, Vanessa asked shyly. “Of course”, Harry said with his typical Harry smile. The three of us went on the glass balcony again and another girl made a picture of us with Vanessa’s polaroid camera. “If you become serious together, at least I can say I got a picture with Harry’s beautiful girlfriend”, Vanessa said. “Thank you. You’re so sweet”, I said while blushing a little. “How long do you know each other now? I don’t think I have seen you before”, another girl asked. “Two days”, I said grinning. All the girls’ eyes widened. “Were you at the concert as well?”, I asked the girls. They all nodded. “Well I was there too and that’s when I met Harry”, I said. “Are you together?”, a blonde girl asked. “No, we aren’t”, Harry answered while squeezing my hand, “Not yet. We’ll just see where it goes.” We chatted some more with all the girls, but half an hour later we left the Skydeck to go back to the motorbike. “Your fans are so cute”, I said when we were in the elevator on our way to the main floor. I looked at the polaroid picture in my hand and smiled again. “I really love this picture”, Harry said while both looking at it. “So do I”, I said, still smiling.
“Where do you wanna go?”, Harry asked me when we were outside again. “Whatever you want”, I said. Harry handed me the helmet again and I sat down on the motorbike. “No preference?”, Harry asked while he sat down on the motorbike as well. “No preference”, I said certainly. Harry started the engine and he drove up the road. A while later he stopped in front of a big park. “The park; always perfect”, I said while getting off the motorbike. “I thought so too”, he said while we walked to the park. Harry walked over to a kiosk and I sat down on a bench not far away from the kiosk. Less than a minute later he came back with a bag full of bread. I started to laugh. “Let’s feed the ducks”, he said grinning. We walked over to the pond in the middle of the park and sat down on another bench. I grabbed a piece of bread out of the bag and threw it in the direction of the ducks. Harry did the same and a few minutes later we were surrounded by the ducks. “I think they love us”, I said grinning. At that moment Harry’s phone ringed. He sighed. He picked up his phone without looking on the screen who it was. “Harry here”, he said. “Shit, are you serious?”, Harry asked shocked and surprised. “Shall we meet at Navy Pier?”, Harry asked a bit uncertain. He hung up. “What’s wrong?”, I asked. “Nothing. We have to go”, he responded. “Already? What about the ducks?”, I said while pouting. Harry started to laugh. “C’mon”, he said and we walked back to the motorbike. “I was actually being really serious about the ducks”, I said when we were sitting on the motorbike again. “You’re going to like this much more”, he said with a chuckle. “Then tell me where we are going to”, I said. “Nope”, he said while popping the p, “It’s a surprise.” “I hate surprises”, I responded. “Well, that’s too bad for you”, he said and I knew he was smirking again.
“Here we are”, Harry said when we arrived at the Navy Pier. I still had no idea what it was. “We are not going in the Ferris wheel”, I said when I saw the big wheel standing. “Don’t worry. You don’t have to”, Harry said laughing. “What are we doing here?”, I asked. “Just be patient”, Harry said with a smirk. “Ooooh stop smirking”, I said laughing. A few minutes later a cab stopped in front of us. At that moment I saw a brown-haired girl running out of it towards us. I smiled when I saw it was Lucie. “Babe! How was your day?”, she asked me smiling. “It was truly amazing”, I said with a real smile. “What about yours?”, I asked her. “Exactly the same”, she responded smiling too. Niall had also stepped out of the cab and I walked over to him to give him a hug. “Hey! How was your date with Lucie? Could you handle her?”, I asked Niall laughing. “It was really nice and of course”, he answered laughing back. “Shall we go?”, Niall asked. “To where?”, I asked. I was definitely too curious. That’s why I also hated surprises. I always want to know what’s going on. “Yeah, that’s what I’ve wanted to know the whole drive. Niall was being so mysterious”, Lucie said. “Harry too”, I said laughing. Harry and Niall walked in front of us and Lucie and I just followed them. We stopped in front of a dinner cruise. “Ladies first”, Harry said and pointed at the entrance of the boat. “Do I have to take off my heels?”, I asked uncertain. “Just go”, Lucie laughed and pushed me in front of her. When we all stepped on the boat, we got welcomed by a waiter. “Mr. Styles and Mr. Horan. Ladies. Please follow me”, the waiter said and he walked in front of us to a table. We all sat down and almost immediately the boat started cruising. Lucie and I looked a bit surprised. “We hired the cruise for only the 4 of us”, Niall explained. Lucie and I were sitting on one side of the table and Niall and Harry were sitting in front of us. “It’s beautiful”, Lucie said while she looked over Lake Michigan. It was still daylight, but there were already so many lights on and alongside the water. “It will only get better”, Harry responded smiling. “But why did you have this mysterious phone call?”, I asked Harry and Niall a while later. “Your parents called the police because they think you’re missing”, Harry explained. I sighed. “Pfff, they can be so stupid. Like we would stay in our hotel room all day long. C’mon, we’re teenagers. No teenager obeys their parents”, I said. “Let’s just not think about this, but enjoy our night instead”, Lucie said. We had a delicious dinner while the cruise was floating quietly on the water. When it was twilight, the lake turned even more beautiful. Harry was right. Suddenly we heard some cracks and something lightened up the sky. We all looked outside to see it was fireworks coming from the Navy Pier. It was absolutely beautiful. “Let’s go outside”, Harry suggested. We all walked to the upper deck of the cruise so we could see the fireworks more clear. I took Harry’s hand in mine as we were standing there and watching. “It’s perfect”, I whispered. “Look, there’s a shooting star”, Harry said while pointing at the sky. The sky was as clear as it was before today and you could see all the stars shining bright. They say you can make a wish when you see a shooting star, right? Well, I didn’t have to make one. My wish was standing right next to me. I saw Harry looked at me and I turned my head to look at him as well. “Thank you for this wonderful day”, I whispered smiling. At that moment we both leaned in to kiss each other. It was like fireworks were exploding around us. Oh wait, they were for real.
