Dinner went as planned, joyfully and simply and afterwards everyone spent time together in the library. Carrie was sitting next to Charles talking when Amanda came over and sat on the other side of Carrie. "I wonder if our parents will ever stop talking so I can just go to sleep already." Amanda looked over to their parents expectantly while she said this to her brother and cousin.
"If you want to leave so much I doubt there is anyone here that would stop you." Amanda turned her head to her brother and looked him straight in the eye and over Carrie.
"I suppose I might have to. I don't want my fatigue to cause me to spill any secrets unknowingly."
"Oh trust me cousin Amanda, but I doubt you're the only one here with secrets." Carrie laughed lightly and smiled politely but Amanda only half smiled in return.
"I was never talking about my own secrets." Amanda arose from her spot on the couch and she walked over to their parents with the sound of her pearls making her appearance known.
"Excuse me but today has been a long day and I think I'm going to go to be early tonight." Amanda kissed her mother and aunt on the cheek as she was getting ready to turn and go on her way.
"Oh honey you're right, I think we might go to bed soon too." Amanda smiled to her father and felt relieved that she was not the only one extremely tired and turned towards the door and went upstairs to her room.
Shortly after she left everyone said their goodnights to one another and went on their way to bed. Carrie was the last to leave because she decided to stay after and read a meaningless letter that she had received from earlier that day. She closed the library door quietly behind her as she approached the stairs.
Niall just finished helping Charles get ready for bed and was relieved that the day was finally over. It was almost midnight and tomorrow will be twice as hectic downstairs than it was today. He closed Charles' door quietly behind him as he made his was down the upstairs hallway towards the servant's stairs. He had noticed Carrie approaching the top of the stairwell and he contemplated hiding somewhere before she saw him. Before coming up with a place to hide, Carrie had already seen him and walked towards him.
"Niall, I was just wondering if you would like to go to the village on Monday. I know it's your day off but I had so much fun going to the village with you last time that I wanted a chance to do it again." Carrie looked hopefully at Niall and he felt as though he probably looked like a deer caught in headlights. He was so happy she asked to hang or with him again, but he was afraid he might be interfering between her and possibly Charles.
"Of course I would love to go, but I don't want to give anyone any wrong ideas of our relationship." Once he said that, he felt like smacking himself in the face. He barely had a relationship with her and what he said might have just ruined it. Carrie was kinda hurt by his words because she thought he felt the same way for her as she did for him.
"I'm not worried about that if you aren't, but if you are worried I understand." Carrie was about to turn around and walk away when Niall reached for her arm and stopped her. He knew professionally he shouldn't have done that, but he couldn't help himself.
"I'm not worried, it's just you're at that age where you should be looking for a suitable husband and I don't want to stop them from approaching you." Carrie looked down at Niall's hand on her arm and took a step closer to him.
"Those men can wait. I'd rather spend a day with a friend of mine than sit and wait for my father to sign marriage papers for me." Niall smiled immediately at Carrie and was surprised she called him her friend because that meant that maybe it wasn't all in his mind after all.
