My Heart Skips A Beat

Chapter 16

HARRY’S POV:
Although I did want to go into town to get some things I mostly went because I felt like Anna just wanted to be alone. Or maybe she just didn’t want to be around me. I ended up parking in this abandoned lot, and calling the one person I really felt like I could talk to;
“Hey Lou.” I said, keeping my head down as I talked just in case anyone noticed me.
“Hey, mate. How’s everything going there?” He seemed concerned.
“It’s sort of terrible. She’s not doing so well, not that I blame her. I just haven’t got a clue of what I can do to make this better.”
“Honestly, Harry, I’m not sure there is anything you can do right now.”
“I can’t just sit around! It’s killing me, man.” Out of pure frustration I hit both hands on the steering wheel.
“I hear you… I’m really sorry.”
“What would you do if you were in this situation?”
“I’m not sure I’m the best-“
“No, you are Louis. You’re my best mate. You’re good in a crisis. Please just try and help me here.” I heard Louis sigh.
“I think if I were you I would just, be there for her in any way you can. If she doesn’t want to talk to you, don’t force it. If she does, just be able to listen. I can try and talk to Anna if you want.”
“Do you think that would help?”
“I don’t see it hurting the situation.”
“Yeah, okay…sounds good.”
“We’re not gonna leave you two to deal with this alone, mate. We are all here for you guys no matter what.”
“Thanks Lou.”
“I’ll go give her a call.”

A little while later I returned to the house. I walked in to see Anna in the same place she was when I left. But now, she had her laptop in front of her.
“Oh, no.” Her head snapped up.
“I’ve already seen them, Harry.” She said, knowing what I was worried about instantly.
“But - Why?”
“I just sort of had to. If we’re ever going to get past this…” She closed the computer, getting up and coming over to where I stood. “ And I talked to your friend…” A small smile appeared on her face.
“Yeah, he said he was gonna call you.”
“I don’t blame you Harry.” She took my hand, now only standing a few inches away from me.
“Why not? It’s my fault, as much as you try to deny it.“
“I don’t blame you because I chose this too. This relationship is not one-sided. I love you, and you love me. And if you think it’s possible - we can deal with this. Together.” I took one step so we were now as close as possible. I was about to lean in for a kiss when she turned her head slightly.
“But, uh. We might want to keep the blinds closed.”

ANNA’S POV:
At around 5:30 I was forced to resume contact with the outside world and turn my cell phone back on. As suspected, I had tons of phone calls from numbers I didn’t recognize., plus a few from Molly. The two that I did not expect to see were the calls labeled ‘Max’ and ‘Dad’. I decided to deal with only one of these right now, redialing my father’s number.
“Hello?” He answered in his serious business voice.
“Hi, dad. It’s me.”
“Why the hell haven’t you been answering my calls?” He was mad, I had expected that.
“I’m sorry. I just, I had turned off my phone-“
“Well I’m sorry Anna, but just because you make a stupid mistake and get yourself in these situations doesn’t mean you get to cut yourself off from the world. That’s not how life works.” I didn’t want to cry any more today. But talking to my dad like this wasn’t making that an easy thing to accomplish.
“I’m sorry, daddy…”
“Don’t ‘daddy’ me. What the hell were you thinking?! I get a call from your mother for the first time in weeks and she tells me THIS!?”
“I, I don’t know what to say.”
“You need to tell me what the hell you’ve been doing ever since we sent you off to that goddamn boarding school!” I think for me, that was the last straw. When he said that, something inside of me snapped.
“What I’ve been doing?! What I’ve been doing is EXACTLY what you and mom told me to do when she shoved me on a plane and sent me away. I’ve been growing the hell up dad, that’s what! So yes, I made a mistake. But don’t you DARE tell me you haven’t made a few of those. And if you can’t think of any, just let me know, because I could come up with a few. So I am SORRY about this. I am SORRY if I let you down. But you don’t get to choose when you’re going to act like a parent. You gave that up a long time ago.” I was crying now.
“You know what, call me back when you’re able to carry on a conversation like an adult, how about that?” Before I could get a word out, he hung up.
“Anna, who was that?” I heart Harry’s voice coming from across the room. I had had no idea he was standing right there. I looked up to see him watching me with a concerned look, his eyebrows knitting together.
“That was, um. My dad.” He swiftly made his way over to me.
“What did he say?”
“He said I made a stupid mistake. He’s angry. He said he doesn’t know what I’m doing with my life. He tells me all this but he couldn’t even say goodbye when I left…”
“What? Are you serious?”
“Yeah. He had to get on a conference call. So, he just sort of left, without a word.” I hadn’t thought about that since the day it happened. I think I had blocked it out of my mind, until now.
“Oh my god…” Harry said quietly. “He’s mad if he thinks you’re not doing anything productive. I’ve never seen anyone work so hard on school in my life. You’re brilliant, Anna. How can he not see that?!” My heart welled when I heard him say those words. I touched Harry’s cheek, softening his features as his eyes shifted down to mine.
“I love you, you know that?” I whispered.
“Ever after everything that’s happened today?” “Especially now.”

The next morning we packed up Harry’s tiny car and headed off back to London. I was petrified to say the least, but we both knew we needed to face this at some point. We didn’t talk much for most of the drive, but it was a comfortable silence. Harry let me pick the music, which was nice because usually he was pretty protective. Mainly because I like to annoy him by blasting their own song. The second we got into the city though, I felt different.
“Go to your place.” I said quickly as he was about to turn to take me to school.
“What?”
“Just go.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes!” He did what I asked, making a U-Turn towards their building.
Big. Mistake.
We were a decent distance away, but could still tell there was a huge crowd outside, mostly photographers.
“Shit!’ Harry cursed under his breath. “I’ll go ‘round the back way.” He said, making another sharp turn down a narrow alley. He parked around back behind the building and we quickly got out of the car, Harry grabbing both of our bags. But now we had to wait for Harry to call one of the boys to come and open the back door, which was locked from the outside.
“Zayn! Get down here fast and open the back door. It’s madness out front!”
Not even a minute later, the door swung open, revealing Zayn in a pair of plaid pajama pants and little else.
“What’s with that?” Harry asked, referring to Zayn’s lack of clothes.
“It’s 8 in the morning, I was fucking asleep.”

Once we were upstairs in Harry’s apartment, I could finally breathe.
“Well that was…eventful.”
“That’s one thing to call it.” Harry agreed. “ I’m gonna go wake up Lou.”
There was a knock on the door. I got up to answer it, seeing Danielle and Liam through the peephole.
“What are you guys doing here?” I asked, throwing open the door.
“I could ask you the same question. Come here-“ Danielle said, pulling me in for a bone-crushing hug. I obliged, needing it desperately.
“I am so sorry, love.” She whispered in my ear.
“Thank you.” I was so incredibly thankful to have her and Eleanor. I honestly don’t know how I would be able to handle all of this without them.
“I’ve brought the necessities.” She said, much more cheerily than before, as she pulled a bottle of wine and a packs of Haribo candy out of her huge bag.
“Dani- It’s 8 AM!”
“I think it’s alright just this once. It’s an emergency.”
“How about we hold of for a bit, save it for later.” We giggled.
“LOUIS TOMLINSON GET YOU ARSE OUT OF BED RIGHT THIS INSTANT!” I heard Harry scream from Louis room. We all looked at eachother and laughed. I was thankful for the people in my life right now. Louis had been right when he had said they were a family. I could see that. But more than anything, I was thankful that they considered me to be a part of it.

HARRY’S POV:
Although I was so glad to see Anna having a good time, I couldn’t help but think she still wasn’t okay. I knew she was upset, and not only about the pictures.
Hearing he talk to her dad on the phone yesterday, I had seen a side of Anna that I had never witnessed before. She was angry, she was sad, and even a little disappointed, all at once. She never talked much about her parents. But from what I can tell, they are both fairly unstable. I wanted to ask her about it but it just never seemed like the right time. Along with that, I was slightly worried about what she was planning to do about school. She had already missed today, which wasn’t the biggest deal, but I was sure everyone had seen the pictures by now. I know I shouldn’t be so concerned, just be in the moment and all that. But I couldn’t help but think about these things.
“Harry! Get over here, we’re gonna have a nice little sing!” Louis yelled as he powered up the karaoke machine we have used a total of three times, including now.
“I’ll be choosing our first duet, if you don’t mind.” Louis said. It was around 4 PM and we had spent the whole day hanging around our building, mingling between all of our flats. Louis had clearly had a few too many drinks, which turned him into a complete mad man, which was actually one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
“Alright, Tommo.” I joked as he fumbled with the remote, trying to select a song.
“AHH!! PERFECT!” He shouted when he had found ‘The Song’. Suddenly, the first few guitar cords of “Summer of ’69” played through our sound system. I couldn’t help but give Louis a look as if to say, “are you serious?”.
“SING TO ME HAZ!” He said, arms open wide.
I looked over at Anna who was sitting on the couch with the other girls. She just smiled. I gave her a wink before I started the song, handing the mic over to Lou after a minute.
“I’m gonna hand this one over to you, my friend.”
I went over to sit with Anna who was talking and giggling with Eleanor and Danielle.
“Having fun?” I whispered in her ear.
“Yes, very much. I think this was exactly what I needed.”
She was smiling, visibly happy. But, like before, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was partly for show.
