Chapter 5

So sorry that it has taken me ages to post Chapter 5
My phone that had my almost finished Chapter 5, decided to not work at all
So I had to rewrite the whole chapter

(Check out the new cover for the story!)

*****

"Well Jay, congratulation on surviving your first day!" Nigella exclaimed as I crammed my things into my bag.

"Thank you!"

She glanced down to my feet. “Are you seriously still in those?”

“Yeah, why?”

“For me it would be torture to wear those red devil heels to work!”

I giggled. “I didn’t wear them the whole day. I took them off when I did the cash register.”

She nodded her head. “Oh, well that’s reasonable.”

“So, is there anything else you need me to do before I go?”

She looked around. "Umm... Actually there is one thing, if you don't mind."

"Not at all!"

Nigella smiled. "I figured you’d say that. We just got more of the floral rompers like the ones in the back-left corner. Can you just hang them up over there in the front?"

"For sure," I stated.

As I started to hang up the rompers, I got lost in thought. Monday's usually drag on, but today I couldn't believe that it was already over. It's like time drank an energy juice and sped up. To make room for more of the new rompers, I separated the different styles and colours of rompers on the rack.

"Boo!"

My heart skipped a beat and I fell on my ass, flinging the clothes in my hands. Looking up, I noticed it was the one and only Louis Tomlinson. He laughed at me as he helped me to my feet. I couldn't help, but laugh at myself either.

"What are you doing here? How’d you know where I worked?"

"I actually didn't know you worked here. I was just taking a stroll and saw you in the window. I figured that I should see if you wanted to hang out since the other guys can't."

I smiled. "Definitely! I actually just got done with my shift. I was hanging some stuff up before I left."

"Well that worked out perfectly then! Let me help you with that," Louis stated.

As we picked up the scattered clothes from the ground, an idea came to mind. "We could go back to my place and watch a movie if you want. You can stay for dinner too. I promise I'm a good cook," I stated giving a cheesy smile.

He giggled. "Sounds good to me!"

***

“Sooo, how is it?” I anxiously asked as Louis took his first bite.

Chewing, his eyes widened. “Oh wow! What is this? This is amazing!”

A big smile of success was placed on my face. “It’s a secret family recipe.”

“It looks like an improved shepherd’s pie, but it tastes so different and good! You weren’t lying when you said you were a good cook!”

“Thank you!”

“I’m just going to let you know in advance that I’m bringing the boys over here at some point to try this,” Louis stated.

I laughed. “Okay.”

We continued to eat and talk. Eventually, we made our way back over to the living room to watch another movie. It was nice to finally have a movie night without having to pack or unpack. Little things that Louis did reminded me of someone who I talked to yesterday, someone I missed terribly. He reminded me of Andrew. Before I could ruin the happiness in this moment with my sad thoughts, I focused on the positive. Maybe, just maybe, Louis would be the Andrew over here for me.

At some point during the night I found myself lying on the couch with my head resting on Louis' lap as he sat and talked with me. He really was easy to be around. I knew we were going to have a great friendship.

"Oh, I've had about 3 or 4 boyfriends..... And an ex fiancé," I stated whispering the last part.

I really don't know why I said that. I didn't have to say that. I guess the atmosphere Louis and I shared was one of comfort because the words flowed from my mouth with ease.

Louis' eyes widened. "What did you just say?!"

"Yeah, I've had an ex fiancé," I said kind of awkwardly.

"You are just full of surprises!"

I just nodded.

"What was the lucky, but unlucky guy's name?"

I smiled at his word choice. "His name was Derek. We met back in freshmen year, but we didn't start dating until our junior year."

Louis must have taken note of the uneasiness that was in the atmosphere. "If you don't mind me asking, what happened?"

I shook my head. "I don't mind, but are you sure you want to know? It's kind of a long story."

"I'm sure only if you're sure you're okay telling me."

I nodded and began. "Derek and I were together the whole time from junior to senior year back in high school. We were inseparable. We applied for the same colleges because we wanted to always be together. Apparently we had sex for the first time during the second semester of our senior year. Due to the fact that I was drunk that night, I didn’t remember anything, but I know it happened because I took a pregnancy test and it said I was pregnant. The next day after taking the pregnancy test, Derek proposed to me and I said yes, but I didn’t tell him I was having his kid. Everything was going fine until he got a letter saying that he was accepted into the college he really wanted to go to and secretly applied for. Even though it was far from where I was going to attend, I couldn’t be the one to hold him back. Derek had everything for him. I couldn’t ruin that. A month after he proposed, we were about to tell his parents about the marriage when I told him I was having his baby. He didn't say anything and only had a look of shock. I told him I couldn't take away his plans, his future all because I was pregnant. I told him I couldn't marry him, I couldn't give him a wife and kid to worry about and not reach his full potential. Derek said he didn't care because he loved me, but I couldn't stay. I just felt in my heart that I wasn't supposed to be there, I wasn't supposed to be with him at that time even though he was my first true love. In the end, I needed to be somewhere new and I needed to have new plans to forget about everything. Instead of going to the uni I wanted to attend, I thought what's more different and new than the place I was born, New Mexico. A month after I broke it off with Derek, I found out I wasn't pregnant. I was so happy, but I still didn't think it would've been right to go back to him. Finding out that amazing news was just in time because the week after that was graduation week. After graduation, I finally told Derek I wasn't having his kid, but after that I refused to have any contact with him because it was the past. To this day I haven't had any contact with Derek."

I sat up.

"Oh Jay, I'm sorry you had to go through that," Louis said reaching over and wiping a tear off my face that I didn't know that I had.

"It's fine. I mean I wouldn't be where I am today if any of that didn't happen."

"That's true."

After a sigh, I smirked. "Your turn. I was informed about a year ago by my little sister that you had a girlfriend. How's that going?"

He scratched the back of his neck. "We split about 9 months ago, back in August.”

“Oh I’m sorry. How long were you guys together?”

“We were together for two years. She was very pretty and educated. She was just an amazing girl, but she also had a different side to her. At the party the boys and I threw to kick off the North American leg of the tour, she tried to make Liam have sex with her because she was mad at me. She heard that I was going to breakup with her that night. I don’t know how she heard, but it was true. I was only going to breakup with her because it just kept getting harder to be with each other and the tour wasn't making things any easier. I'd also hear things from my directioners about things she would do or say and I didn't want to believe them. I'd focus on all the good things in the past and compare to what my fans were telling me. Before I found out what she was doing I thought that maybe I didn't have to breakup with her and I made the decision to wait it out. Once I found out what she was up to, I said bye-bye to her. I was stuck in the past and too far back that I guess I didn't see that at that moment the two of us were drifting apart. To be honest, I don’t even know if what we had was even love. I mean I loved her, but I don’t think I actually loved her."

I looked to Louis as he was leaning on forward with his elbow rested on his legs. I saw how his wonderful blue eyes no longer had a sparkle; unhappiness filled them. He looked like a sad little puppy. I was so used to seeing cheerfulness on Louis’ face. This new look was one that didn’t belong.

I placed a hand on Louis’ back as he fidgeted with his fingers. "I'm sorry to hear that." Our eyes locked. "Even though it might not have been love, I can still tell that you really cared for her. I'm sorry she wasn't able to be around to see the amazing guy you are today. I'm just glad I got to because you are truly an incredible person to know and that is saying a lot since we only met about two days ago."

His lips curved instantly and he sat back. "Thank you and I can say the same about you."

We sat there in silence for a moment. My head found its way back to his lap.

Louis cleared his throat. "Didn't you say earlier you were going back out with an ex of yours?"

"Yeah...I guess. I mean I only told him I would because it was out of nowhere and I panicked."

"Is he a nice guy?"

My body's movement ceased. "Um...yeah."

An eyebrow was lifted. "You don't sound so convincing."

“He’s a whole different story. Let’s just say that back then he wasn’t the best under any circumstances, but it’s been almost two years since then. Even though he doesn’t deserve another second chance, I’m still giving him one. I’m pretty sure he’s changed. He seems nicer now. Skyler would prefer me to not be with him, but after I told her about what happened on mine and Kellen’s date, she said it sounded like I was talking about a different person. I just don’t know how I feel about this whole situation. My best guy friend that I was telling you about earlier, Andrew, I haven’t even told him that Kellen and I are together again, let alone that I’ve even been in the same city as the guy. Andrew would murder Kellen and then lock me in a tower. I mean he’s reasonably protective over me. After what all I’ve been through, I can see where he is coming from.”

“Oh, what happened between you and Kellen?”

As much as I loved that Louis genuinely cared about what I had to say and was actually wanting to know about my past, I couldn’t tell him. It was too personal of a story to tell someone I nearly just met. Telling Louis about Derek was actually a bit much to tell someone you just met. It was pretty personal. Telling him about Kellen would be a little to much for me to handle in one night. The only people who knew about what happened, were those that it involved. The only exception to the list that consisted of me, Andrew, and Kellen, was Skyler. She only knew because she’s well, my best friend, so of course she was going to know about what happened. The four of us were the only ones who knew at the moment and quite frankly, I wish I didn’t.

“Sadly, I’m going to have to say that I can’t tell you. Maybe at some point you will get to hear the story, but I just can’t tell it to you right now, sorry.”

“It’s okay, I understand. Some things are just really personal.”

I smiled. “Thank you for not pushing.”

“So a little birdy told me that you and Niall have been texting,” Louis stated changing the subject.

“Was that little birdy Niall?”

“Maybe.”

I laughed.

***

My eyes popped open instantly at the sound of the front door slamming shut. My eyes met familiar blue ones that were inches from mine. Realization hit and Louis and I shot up from where we laid together on the couch. As I had suspected, Louis and I were not alone. Skyler stood in the doorway, wide-eyed and mouth agape with plastic bags in hand.

“Um… Hey, Louis.”

Louis matched Skyler’s awkward smile. “Hi, Skyler!”

“Would you like to join Jay and I for some breakfast?”

Louis looked to me and I nodded my head to let him know it was okay. “I would love to!”

“Great!”

Nothing was said as we made our way to the kitchen to put the food on plates. Within about five minutes the three of us were sitting at my dining table eating breakfast.

Skyler cleared her throat. “Can I ask what happened last night? Is there.. uh… something going on that I should know about? What was up with the whole... um.. couch thing? ”

Louis and I made eye contact and laughed. “No, nothing’s going on. Yesterday, I was getting off my shift when Louis popped up out of nowhere. We decided to hang out and we did that here at my place. We kind of had a movie night and I guess the two of us just passed out.”

“Oh, I see how it is. You guys had a movie night and didn’t invite me. I’m hurt,” Skyler joked.

We laughed and continued eating. One thing didn’t make sense.

“Skyler, why are you here?”

“Gosh Jay, that was so nice,” Louis said sarcastically.

Before I could say anything, Skyler was agreeing with Louis and got up from her seat to walk away dramatically. “That was, wasn’t it? I don’t have to be here if you don’t want me to.”

I tried pulling Skyler back, but I found myself being dragged on the floor on my butt as I held on to her. “No, no, no, I didn’t mean it like that! I was just wondering why you brought breakfast and so early in the morning!”

She laughed and sat back down. “I know what you meant.”

Louis was laughing too and shook his head. “What a friendship you guys have.”

“You’re just jealous of this!” I claimed motioning to Skyler and I as I gave him a smug look in addition.

“He is Jay, we’re just so cool!” Skyler agreed.

Louis chuckled and rolled his eyes as well. “Totally.”

“I came over because I figured you would be exhausted from yesterday and would be running late to get out the door. Knowing you I knew you would be hungry and would want some breakfast before you had to go to-”

“WORK!” I exclaimed hopping up from my seat.

I booked it to my bedroom and swung the closet door open. I can’t believe I forgot about work! I’m such an idiot! Now I had to figure out what to wear. Luckily an aqua coloured V-neck shirt caught my eye. I paired it up with my white polka dot jean shorts. To finish the rushed look, I threw my hair up into a ponytail and put on a white bandana. When I ran back down to Skyler and Louis they were still eating.

“I take it that you forgot about work?” Louis said as I approached.

“Yeah,” I said stuffing my face before putting my plate in the sink.

After grabbing my bag and beginning to walk to the door, I spoke to Louis and Skyler. “Hey, you guys can stay as long as you want, but I gotta go.”

“Jay, you forgot something!” Louis stated.

“I did?”

Skyler laughed with Louis. “Unless there’s a new trend going around about being barefoot, I think you forgot your shoes.”

My head looked down. “Ugh! I give up!”

I ran to my room again and grabbed my two different neon coloured socks before slipping on my pair of black Vans. Just as I was about to run back out of my room, I got a text.

Hey babe, would you like to join me for lunch tomorrow? Let me know as soon as you can so I can make reservation.
-Kellen

This was the worst possible time to text me. I didn’t want to have to deal with him and I didn’t want to have to make a fast decision. I know as fact that I am the worst possible person to make a decision. Skyler would agree in a heartbeat. I guess I have to say yes because apparently me and him are a thing now and I did say that I would give him another second chance.

I would love to! The thing is, I don’t get off for lunch until 11:30.
-Jay

I walked back out to the others and got a thumbs up from Louis. When I went to speak my phone vibrated in my left hand.

That’s fine. That actually will work perfectly for me! And yes I will be picking you up babe ;)
-Kellen

Okay, great! I’ll be looking forward to it!
-Jay

Of course that would work out perfectly for you, Kellen. I’m not a fan of him calling me babe. If I could have any expression on my face it would be the one where I’d shake my head and stick my tongue out in disgust.

Come on Jay! Be a bit more mature. You’re the one who put yourself in this position.

I guess I do have a point.

“What was that look on your face for?” Skyler asked.

Note to self: Next time, keep your expressions to yourself, Jay.

“Well apparently, I’m going to have lunch with… um… Kellen,” I stated making Skyler’s entire movements stop.

I wasn’t surprised that Skyler didn’t say anything.

“You could always ditch him and have lunch with me instead,” Louis said jokingly, trying to lighten the atmosphere once more.

“Very true, Louis,” I replied smiling.

Skyler’s smile returned. “Well Jay, you better get going before you’re late.”

“Okay, bye guys!” I stated making my way to the door.

“Bye Jay! Tell Nigella I said hi!” Skyler shouted.

“Bye Jay! Good luck! I hope your car doesn’t break down!” Louis yelled to me.

“Thanks Louis for making me all cautious now!”

“Anytime love!”
