Shattered

I turned off my car and stepped out, walking towards the front door.

" Hey mom." I said as I stepped inside.

" Hey Sydney. Did you find any openings?" She asked, sipping her tea. I sighed. She was referring to a summer job.

" No. I didn't."

I needed a job before college so I can save money and afford the college life. I sat on a barstool.

" I tried Coldstone, but they had no openings. I went to the Country Club down the road and they had already found a person for the slot. I tried everywhere mom."

My mother sighed and gave me an ' Oh well ' face.

I heard footsteps coming down the stairs, and I turned around to see Marilyn Stumbling down the stairwell, her light red hair bouncing everywhere.

" What're you guys talking about?" She asked, coming into the kitchen.

" My summer job."

she frowned.

" You still didn't find one yet?"

I shook my head no as she rounded the island, opening the fridge.

" Maybe Harry will give you a job."

She closed the fridge holding a carton of milk. My eyebrows scrunched together.

" Harry? Doesn't he work at a bar?" I asked. She nodded and shrugged.

" Yeah. There's nothing wrong with that. I can get him to pull a few strings and then you could probably start working there. It's a pretty nice place actually." She filled a glass of milk.

" I don't want to work at a bar."

She rolled her eyes.

" Syd, you are giving Alcohol to people. That means you will get paid well, plus tips from drunken strangers. Better than working at McDonald's or some shit." She put the carton back in the refrigerator and sipped her drink. My mother gave Marilyn ' The ' look for say shit.

" Mom, what do you think?" I asked. My mother shrugged.

" I mean, she's right. It would pay well, but I don't want you to get... In trouble that you can't save yourself from..." She trailed off.

I knew new she meant kidnapped or raped, or something to that extent.

" Do you think I'm that stupid? I wouldn't tell her about it if I thought it wasn't safe. The owner is a retired UFC fighter."

Hmm. Thats actually pretty cool.

My mother sighed, looking at me.

" It would pay well. Why don't you try it for a week, see how you like it. It's just a summer job. You'd probably be working daytime hours anyway, since you're only 17."

I sighted. This is what it has come down to. Working behind the bar with the asshole Marilyn calls her boyfriend.

" Fine. " I said. Marilyn smiled.

" I'll go call him right now for that matter."

Later that night I came down for dinner to see Harry himself and Marilyn at the table eating.

" Hey Syd, I've got some good news." Marilyn spoke up, bringing the fork to her mouth. I saw Harry turn around in his chair.

" What is it?" I went to the kitchen to get my food.

" Harold here, Talked to his boss today, and they agreed that you could start tomorrow?" She smiled at Harry across the table. I squealed.

" Really?"

Harry nodded.

" Yeah. He said we needed a girl to start working there anyways. Especially a young one like yourself." He said in his deep, slow British accent.

Harry was from England, but moved here because he got into too much trouble in England. I don't know. I barely know him, even though he's dated Marilyn for a long time.

When Marilyn first brought him home, I knew my mother wouldn't like him. He had tattoos all down his arms and body, plus a lip peircing.

" So I start tomorrow?" I asked, pushing Harry from my thoughts.

" Yeah, I just said that." He retorted. I sighed.

" What time?"

" The bar opens at 5:00."

My my eyebrows came together in confusion. That's awful late.

But it it was a bar, so I guess it's fine. I'm just excited to get paid.
