Haunted By Love

Another lost soul

‘’So, how was your day, honey?’’

Granny was cooking the diner. I loved watching her doing it. When we were visiting my grandparents when I was younger, I used to sit on the stool, resting my head on the island and just watch. Watch her taking the flour and spreading it everywhere, manipulating a knife or cleaning a piece of chicken. I smiled of the thought of my childhood. When I used to be happy, before everything gets complicated.

‘’Fine, I guess.’’ I replied.

‘’Is Zayn eating with us?’’

I shook my head. After I successfully convinced Savannah, the little girl, to go up in Raj, Zayn left. He told me he had things to do, like homework.

The thing is; its winter breaks. We don’t have homework.

I knew his real reason to leave anyway. Even if he already believed I was seeing things, it was the first time I was… proving it to him. He was clearly scared and he didn’t want to hurt me by saying he was. Of me. I wasn’t feeling like squeezing the words out of his mouth. I didn’t want to hear it.

It hurts, you know. When no one thinks you’re down to Earth. When everyone thinks you are just a crazy girl and if they touch you, they’ll be forever curse by whatever.

That’s why I let it go. I don’t like picking up fights with Zayn. He’s my only friend. Even if I’m 99,9% sure he’ll never leave me because of my psychic gift –it’s so not a gift-, there is that 0,1% that scared me. There is that little insecure voice in me saying he’ll leave me all alone eventually. It’s just a matter of time.

I heard the clicking noise of the front door opened.

‘’I’m home!’’ Liam yelled.

‘’In the kitchen!’’ My Granny and I responded in union.

When Liam stepped in the kitchen, his nose and cheeks were red. He had snowflakes on top of his hair. I jumped off of the stool and ruffled them away.

‘’Beanies do exist, you know.’’ I teased him.

Liam rolled his eyes and flashed a big grin.

‘’Oh, smells nice! What are you preparing us, Gran?’’ Liam asked, sniffing the air.

‘’Chili.’’

Liam started jumping around like a little kid.

‘’Spicy?’’ He asked, his eyes full of hope.

‘’No, because I don’t like it spicy. And yesterday, diner was spicy. Now it’s my turn to enjoy, no offence Gran, at the fullest the taste of the food. Deal with it.’’ I said, crossing my arms on my chest.

Liam pouted and poked me one the stomach, making a squeal escaped my lips.

‘’You two: no fight in the kitchen. Enda, can you please go in the reserve and bring me a can of tomato soup?’’

I nodded and went for the basement’s door. I opened it and went down the stairs. I paused abruptly.

I could sense the aura of a lost spirit.

I walked carefully through the basement, heading to the reserve. That was weird: habitually, when I feel a spirit is near, I found it instantly. This time, I only felt cold eyes intensely watching me. The feeling grew bigger in me as I approached the reserve’s door. Now, it was clear: behind me.

I spun around rapidly to finally confront the lost spirit, but no one was there. I had now difficulties to breathe normally. I will never get use to this. I remarked something moving at my left. I shifted precipitously my head.

I barely saw it, but I did.

It was a lost soul. I think it was a boy, but he was so pale, I couldn’t identify his face. He started to disappear, but I caught he’s eyes before they faded away too. Even if I could easily see the room through him, I was able to examine his eyes. Blue, frigid, dull eyes.

I started to shake: I’m a scaredy cat. Some ghost loves to tease me at first and I guess this one will. I have to be stronger than him. If he knows how terrified I am, he will take advantage of the situation and I won’t be capable to transfer him to Raj. I searched a piece of courage in me and finally spoke: ‘’Don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you.’’

The only answer I got was the silence rooming the basement. I was now resting on the reserve’s door, desperate to be part of the wood. That could be cool, being a door. No one would judge me by my look; I will only be made of wood. I would be the guardian of the reserve.

The lost soul appeared in front of me, making me wish more and more I was truly a door. He was still very pale. I didn’t get why.

The lost souls are not like in the movies, you know: scary as shit and you can see right through them. No, they are not like that at all. They are just like they were in their living life; it’s just that they emitted something stronger then the living ones. It’s because of their aura. We all do have an aura, but it gets more evident once we died. They lost 3 senses: touch, taste and smell. I don’t know why, though.

Maybe this lost spirit isn’t a lost spirit. Maybe he’s something else that I never saw before. My attention went back on his eyes to found out the answer. He seemed surprised.

‘’You… See me now?’’ His voice was just a whisper.

Now?
