Dirty Little Secret

Dirty Little Secret

Hunter
...

“Why are you crying? Are you lost?” I asked the girl sitting under a tree while she’s resting her head on it. I can hear her calling her mom and dad while she’s sobbing. I think, she’s really lost.

“Umm...” she said as she nods her head simultaneously at me. I stared at her for a minute. She has a long blonde hair that matches her blue pair of beautiful round eyes. She was wearing a white knee length frilly dress and a black doll shoes.

“I guess you really need a friend right now. Here, you can have this doll!” I said and gave her the doll that wasn’t mine at all, I stole it from a toy store and this is actually for my elder sister’s birthday. We couldn’t afford to buy a doll as expensive as this to give to her. My dad is only a wood cutter and my mom sells fruits in the city. We are not studying and my sister stays at home. “She can be your friend. She has a shoulder to cry on.” She stared at me blankly and I can tears in her eyes foretelling me that it will fall anytime and she will start crying again. She wiped her tears out with her pink embroidered handkerchief and she pushed the doll back to me.

“I have plenty of that at home. My dad can buy me a toy store. He can buy the prettiest doll on earth and give it to me!” She stood up and crossed her arms. She even tucked her tongue out. Such a brat. I stroked my nape out of my frustration. Why is she acting at me like she’s older than me? I can that I’m older than her. But instead of pulling her hair like the other kids will do, I let out a big grin and then I snorted. “What’s with the grin? Are you making fun of me?” She pouted after.

I walked towards her and pinched her nose and then I laughed. “Don’t be so angry, you will have lines here” I said as I traced the lines on her forehead. She pushed my hand away, “You must be rich.. But I know that this isn’t the prettiest doll your dad will give you, but this doll can be your best friend.” I smile at her.

“Okay. You insist” she said and gets the doll from me. She hugged the doll to her chest and holds it tighter. She looks and pointed her finger at me. “You already gave this doll to me. Don’t take it away from me, okay?” I nodded. She sat down on the shed of the tree again; I sat down to her side and watched her playing the toy.

“Why are you crying? You haven’t answered my question” she turns her head back to me. She smiled a little and pointed her finger at me, “Why are you always pointing your finger at me like I did something wrong?”

“Because… because you’re funny!” And she began to laugh. She threw her head back laughing like there’s no tomorrow.

“Stop acting like a fool. It’s evident that you’re sad.” She stopped laughing as she heard what I’ve said.

“I’m just a kid, you know that?! And stop acting like you know everything!” She said and threw the doll at my face and she started crying again. Again, I caressed my nape and clenched my jaw.

“Hey it’s gonna be okay.”

“Yeah because it’s not happening to you.” She said and covered her face with her two hands. I stood up and held her.

“Struggling is pointless.” She was struggling at first but finally she did what I said. I looked at her and she looks like a little conscious. Me either.

“What?” With the tone of her voice, I can tell that she’s already bored of what am I doing. I smiled at her.

“Let’s go where they can’t find us forever.” At first, I thought I was a little off but when she started laughing, I can’t help but to join her. This is the first time to laugh like this that my stomach started to hurt.

“Thank you. My mom died a few days ago and my dad and I came from her grave. I miss my mom, that’s why I’m so sad that she’s already gone. But the fact that my dad seems to be happy when I’m mourning got me. I ran out of our house and luckily, you found me here. I’m so scared of big cats, you know?”

“I’m glad we met.” I said. I’m just a kid so I don’t know how to console a little girl who happened to lose her mom. I hugged her and she does the same. She let go first. I reached out for a box inside my pocket. I showed her the box and gave it to her.

“What’s this?”

“That is my mother’s ring. She gave it to me and she told me that I should give this ring to a very special girl that I want to marry. Open that” I looked at her as she open the box and she saw the ring. “I know that you’re bit disappointed. I know that it’s cheap not like the gold in your dreams but I wish you’d wear it.”

“But we’re still young,” she laughed “I’m just seven.”

“And I’m nine” I said, “That is just a symbol that you’re already engaged. I promise that I’ll find you when we grow older.” I reached for her hand and fit it on her finger. “You’re already sealed, just incase you forgot.”

“I will wait.” She said with a smile.

“By the way, what’s your name?” I asked her to marry me but I haven’t asked her name. I’m such a flirt.

“My name is An----“

“Antonette!” We both look for the voice until we saw a man running towards us. He’s with a kid who’s running too.

“Dad..” She said and ran towards them. I just watch her as she hugged the other kid he’s father with. He looks so worried about her princess. I smiled at my thought. The girl I saw crying is now happy with her father who she kept on calling lately.

“Listen, kid” I was shocked when I saw a man standing in front of me with a sign of madness on his face, “You better stay away from my daughter.”

“Dad, he’s my friend.” said Antonette.

“Let’s go.” I watched them as they walked away from me until their shadow from the bush disappeared. I looked down on my feet and saw a necklace. I knelt down and came to know it was Antonette’s.

“Antonette,” I whispered. I stood up and look at their direction as I shouted, “My name is Raven!” I heard my voice echoed around when it come to my mind that she will never hear what I shouted. Poor me!

As I was walking back to our house, I heard shouts from nowhere. But it became louder and louder as I came nearer our house. I ran as fast as I can.

When I got to our house, heavily breathing, I saw people cramming around and machineries and debris are falling down. They are destructing to old church beside our house where we used to go every Sunday.

I searched for my sister, my father, for my mother in the crowd but I can’t see them. All that I could see are dusts everywhere came from the stones. The noises that came from the trucks and the people are crying everywhere. Some people are trying to stop the demolition but mostly of them are crying their hearts out.

“Stay away you little pieces of shits!” I heard the contractor shouted at us. I covered my ears and I closed my eyes ‘till I heard someone called my name.

“Hunter!” I turned my head to the voice and saw my mother smiling at me, waving. I’m about to step when I saw something fell down.

“Mom!!” I shouted as the bricks, debris, stone fall into my mom. I sprint across the crowd. As I run, I heard shouting of people but I don’t look back. I don’t care. I don’t care.

My mother stiffens her back arching. Blood surges from a wound in her abdomen as the railings pinked at her stomach. A patch of blood spreads over her head and shoulder. I blink and I see her smile as she sweeps her hair trimming into a pile.

She falls down to her knees, her hands limps to her sides, her body slumped to the side like a rag doll. She is motionless and breathless.

I scream as my cheeks gets hot and wet with tears I didn’t feel beginning. Pain stabs through me as everything I am made of collapses, my entire world dismantled for a moment. I feel the cold wind blowing as I kneel down to her side. Watching, looking at her dead body.

“Mom, I promise, I will make them suffer.” I said as I held her to my side and feel the hand of my sister on my shoulder.

“Did you forget what they did?” I am here in a café wearing a black shirt and a gray bonnet sitting beside the window. Mrs. Dickens sip from her coffee and she looked at me.

“No, I didn’t.” I said while staring outside the window and looking at the busy road. I didn’t forget that they killed my mom. I know that this woman’s husband who ordered for that demolition where my mother was killed. The hell with this girl in front of me. I am willing to do anything just to give her the justice she deserves.

“I am here to help you. All you have to do is to ruin this girl’s life,” she said as she gave me an envelope. I opened it and saw a picture of a girl. “Her name is Blaire. Blaire Dickens. Don’t worry about the money. How much do you need to do your job? How much do you need to convince you?”

“It’s not about the money, ma’am” I look at her and I saw her jaw clenched. She’s puzzled, I know. “I just.. I just want to make them suffer.”

“This is your chance. It’s payback time, Hunter. Make them pay. I’ll do my part, but you have to fulfill yours. Here.” I stared at the money on the table. I doubt if I should do this. Fuck this, Hunter! Should I?

“Okay Mrs. Dickens.” I said and smiled at her.

“It’s so nice to deal with you. See you, soon.” She stood up and gets her hand bag and stormed out the room, leaving me hanging.
