Remembering Myself

I awoke early the next morning, early enough that if I left right then I could walk to the beach and see the sun rise, so that’s what I did. I quickly found a light jacket one of the people here kindly gave to me, put on my sneakers, and walked to the beach. Once I got to the edge of the sand, I slid out of my shoes and started to walk on the sand bare food with shoes in hand. I reached the water so it barely lapsed over my feet. I walked along the shore letting the water just drape over my feet as I continued. The sun started to peak over the horizon and I took a seat down in the warm and yet cold sand. I sat there watching the sun emerge and enjoying all the beautiful colors that came along with it. I just sat there, thinking. Thinking about everything I could remember, the little bit that was.

“Hey” Someone quietly said from behind me startling me slightly while snapping me out of my mind. I turned around and was greeted my Liam’s face.

“Hi.” I smiled and turned my attention back to the waves as he sat down, “Beautiful isn’t it?”

“It is. I woke up and got a little worried when I didn’t see you in your bed. When you went to sleep, you were crying, I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“I’m fine, thank you for caring. It’s just the lithe things I am remembering. It seems like I am only remembering the bad, not the good.”

“Don’t worry, I’m sure the good is going to come next, and soon. A girl like you has to have a lot of good things in her life.” He said earning a smile from me.

“Thanks Liam. For everything. I dragged you here. You jumped in after me and saved my life. You helped find someone to take care of me when I fainted, and you are still here helping me try to remember everything. Even after I have emotional breakdowns. So, thank you, really. I don’t know how I could thank you more than that.”

“You don’t have to worry about it. I’m always going to be here for you. I already proved that I would jump off of a boat for you, what more do you need?” He joked making me laugh, “It’s all going to be okay, I promise.”

“I sure hope you’re right.” I said still focusing on the waves as they gently crashed to the shore. Liam put his arm around me and I laid my head on his shoulder as we sat in silence for a few more minutes.

“Frankie.” I said

“Huh?” Liam asked confused as to what I was referring to.

“His name was Frankie, he was my boyfriend at the time. We just graduated and he told me that once he got the money, he was going to make an honest woman out of me. He was my first love, always will be. Now, I don’t remember much, just the accident and a few small memories before all of that, but it’s enough to know how much I loved him and how much he loved me. He died in that accident, it’s a hurtful fact, but I have accepted it. It’s been a year now, he will always have a place in my heart, but I have moved on.” I explained to him everything that I had since remembered.

“I’m so sorry Andie.”

“Don’t be. I appreciate it, but it wasn’t your fault.” I said not wanting him to feel guilty for something that was not his fault in the slightest. “I’m just glad that I am still here to have moments like this. Moments where I get to see beautiful things like this.”

“Me too” Liam said as I turned to him to see him smiling at me. I just smiled back and placed my head back onto his shoulder. I closed my eyes and just concentrated onto remembering the feeling I have during this moment, this perfect moment. If I can’t remember everything about my past, at least at this moment, I want to remember this.
