No Regrets

Chapter One

I was on my break working on a college application essay when my manager, Steven, came up to me and told me to get ready because I was going to be working a group in the private room in about fifteen minutes. I really didn’t feel up to it because I was going into my fourth hour of my shift, AND I had school today, but I saved my essay, got up, and set up the table for five. The only reason I decided to do it is because private room parties usually tip really well. And I needed the money.
It was about thirty minutes later when I noticed that my table had been seated. As I walked into the room, I also noticed the security that was posted at the door. It was strange, but not unheard of so I just ignored it. I worked at a pretty high-end restaurant in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, so we occasionally had some celebrity diners, but none that I had ever been assigned to wait on. Needless to say, I was excited but nervous as I entered the room.
However, when I saw those five faces seated around MY table, I’m pretty sure all my brain activity ceased. I awkwardly regained my composure as I introduced myself to the highly attractive and very intimidating table.
“Hi.. I’m Lizzie, and I’m going to be waiting on y’all tonight. How’s everyone doing?”
The first boy to speak was a dark-haired, thick eye-lashed boy…
“Well hello love I’m Zayn!” he said enthusiastically. His casual tone set me at ease a little. I guess my nerves were still evident though because the boy to his right quickly spoke next.
“I’m Niall, and I like how you say ‘y’all’,” said the blond boy in a fake heavy southern accent. It made me laugh... maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
The next boy to speak was very courteous. I couldn’t help but notice that while he spoke he subconsciously moved the spoon by his right hand further and further away from him on the table.
“Hi Lizzie! I’m Liam.” That was all he said. Short and sweet.
“Oh just give me your spoon already!” exclaimed the boy in the striped t-shirt next to Liam. He then directed his attention to me, “I’m Louis, Lizzie, and thank you for waiting on us tonight.. I know it won’t be the easiest job you’ve had but we appreciate it.” He then turned his attention to the curly haired boy sitting to his right-the last boy left at the table.
The curly haired boy, however, seemed like he was in another world. I hadn’t really noticed, but he had been paying about 110% of his attention to typing what seemed to be a very heated message on his iphone. Louis nudged him in the side.
“Hm? Oh I’ll have a glass of water with lemon.” The curly haired boy said flatly without looking up. It was so rude. It felt like a slap in the face. Louis quickly reprimanded him.
“Harry. Put your phone down and introduce yourself to Lizzie.” It made me smirk because Louis sounded like such a parent. Harry looked up and quickly scanned me from head to toe and back. It was very degrading and lasted a second, but when we made eye contact and I looked into those green eyes, the intensity of his glare literally took my breath away. And then he spoke, and my breath came back.
“Calm down, Louis. It’s not like she doesn’t know who we are. And I’m thirsty. So if we’re done with this little introduction game, I’d like my water.” His voice was deep, and that was all. He picked up his phone and went back to his message.
He frustrated me so much that it took everything in me to remain calm.
“Well... nice to meet you too. I’ll go get some waters and come back for other drink orders.” I said quickly as I exited out of the room and rushed to the kitchen.
The rest of dinner, I was mentally turned off. I had really admired One Direction until tonight. It was sad how one bad impression could kill everyone else’s kindness towards me. I only spent time in the room with them to take their orders and deliver the massive amounts of food.
I was standing outside the kitchen window checking my phone when I heard Harry down the hall by the doors to the bathroom. I still had about five more minutes until I was obligated to check in on them again, so I stayed where I was and eves-dropped on his phone call. His words were shockingly direct and full of anger.
“Look, I don’t care! This isn’t fun anymore. I’m miserable and you honestly just DON’T CARE.” *there was a pause in his end because the other person was talking* “JUST STOP. YOU KNOW WHAT? I DON’T EVEN WANT YOU TO COME DOWN HERE FOR THE PERFORMANCE, SO DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT.” *there was another pause* “Just stop talking. You disgust me. This isn’t working, and you need to give me space. Goodbye Taylor, call me back when you actually learn to care about other people and not just yourself.”
I literally stopped breathing at this point. I hadn’t even put two and two together. He was talking to Taylor Swift. His girlfriend. After hearing his end of the conversation, I kind of felt bad for the boy. But still, that was no excuse for him to be that rude to me. I heard his footsteps coming quickly down the hall and panicked. From where I was standing, it would be obvious that I was listening in on his conversation, but I had no where to go. So, like my typical dumbass self, I just turned around and faced the wall. I thought I was safe until I heard him scoff behind me. Embarrassed, I quickly faced him, but all he did was roll his beautiful green eyes and walk away.
Eager to end this miserable shift, I printed their check and walked into their room.
“Hope you had a nice dinner..” I said flatly as I left the check on the end of the table- silently praying in my head that they would pay in cash and not need change so that they could just leave, and I wouldn’t need to look at those beautiful but terrible green eyes again.
And that’s exactly what they did.
I guess someone felt bad for Harry’s water comment in the beginning of their meal, because they left me a very generous $100 tip. Even though I needed to save the money, I texted my friends to ask them if they wanted to go out when my shift ended. After all, it was a Friday, and I needed to just get drunk and forget about this whole day.
