Chapter 1 – Misunderstanding

I always wondered how he got under my skin. We have been working together for almost two months now; I’ve been here for nearly a year. I got this job to help my dad and his money problems. I worked hard at my job, and then he came along with his green eyes, his curly hair and his dimples He had tattoos up his arms, but he was never a bad boy. . He was always smiling at everyone and in a happy mood all the time. I felt angering, so I punch the dough with a lot of force behind it, “who are you mad at Lu?” I heard him say.

“Life Harry,” I replied. He gives me one of his cheeky smiles trying to lift my mood, “Harry sweetie can you come help me?” I heard Lisa one of the owners shout. His smile disappeared from his face, “I’ll be back to have that life talk,” he says as he ran off. I punch the dough again, “always him,” I mumble to myself. My dislike for Harry is the fact that he gets the extra shifts, the bonuses and never gets in to trouble. I just wanted to fix my dad’s problems and leave; I want to follow my dreams of opening up my own bakery, “Lu are you alright?” I heard Harry ask. I come out of my thoughts, “I’m fine, and why wouldn’t I be?” I asked back. I pick up the dough and slam it in to bread tin, “because you’re taking it out on a piece of dough,” he replied. He walks over to take the bread tin and then puts it in the oven. I stare at the bench, Harry is a nice guy. It just what makes him so special, his family great, his friends are great and his not supporting anyone but himself. I went to punch the bench, then I felt a hand grab it, “you must really hate life today,” I heard Harry say. I slowly put my hand down, “you don’t know,” I confessed. I notice he was still holding my hand, “Lucy stop flirting with Harry and get back to work!” Lisa shouts.

“What is there to do?” I asked annoyed. Harry laughed a little behind me, “clean up and Harry you can help,” Lisa tells us. Harry walks over to the broom and picks it up, “Harry lock up when you’re done,” Lisa says as she came back in. Harry nods, “also make sure tomorrow stock is ready,” she added. As soon as she left Harry runs over to the radio and turns it on and up. The song playing was an upbeat song that I could see all the teenage girls dancing too. I started to get lost in this happy music that was playing that I didn’t notice that I started to move to the music, “nice to see you move that old body of yours,” Harry Joked.

“Now careful Styles, I’m only twenty-five,” I smiled back. Harry came over to me, “then why do I got to do all the lifting, I’m only a year younger then you?” he asked. I started to laugh at the thought of Lisa looking at Harry arse as he picked up a box, “Do you bend over?” I wondered.

“They just want to look at my bum!” he shouted as he acted shocked. Then he started to laugh, which made me laugh harder. Harry stops laughing and smiled at me, “nice to hear you laugh,” he tells me. I stop and look at him, “I think we should go back to work,” I say as I turn around and start cleaning the bench.

Could Harry really be a nice guy and I only have this anger towards him because my life is shit? For the past two months Harry been trying to get to know me, but I keep shutting him out. I don’t like people to know my life is like right now with my dad. Why I wear long sleeves and jeans every day of the year. I heard a slow song came on the radio about love and betrayal. I could hear Harry singing it; his voice was beautiful and full emotion. I turn around to watch him as he was still sweeping the floor as he was singing. Then he notices me, “yes?” he said embarrassed.

“You have a beautiful voice,” I tell him. He looks at the ground, “thanks, my dad used to tell me that,” he smiled. I could not help but feel sadness when he said it, “used to?” I asked. Harry looked at the floor, “he died when I was ten in a work accident,” he tells me. Harry looked a bit upset about it, “I’m sorry to hear,” I say. He looks at me, “thanks,” he smiled. The he went back to sweeping the floor.

After we finished cleaning we sat down and started to go through what needed to be done for tomorrow, “why are we doing this?” Harry asked. He grabbed a bag of flour, “because I mouthed off and you laughed,” I tell him. Harry got up and start to put stuff in the mixers, “but don’t they do it when they get here in the morning?” he questioned. I look at him, “I think they just put it in the oven and sit down and watch TV,” I laughed. He smiled, “you might be right,” he tells me. Then the timer goes off for the bread I made, “I’ll get it,” Harry tells me. He went over to the oven and gets the bread out. I walked over, “why do you make a single loaf of bread?” he asked. I didn’t answer him as I walked over to the fridge and got out the butter, “because nothing beats fresh warm bread,” I final answered as I got out a knife. Harry flips the bread on to the side and starts to cut it up, “you work late a lot don’t you?” he asked. I smiled as I buttered the pieces of bread, “I’ll that as a yes,” he added. He picks up a piece and starts to eat it.

After we finished all our work and the bread, “oh my god it ten,” Harry says as he looks at his phone. We head outside the bakery as Harry locked up, “so see you tomorrow?” he asked. I smiled, “nope, it my day off,” I say. Harry looked disappointed, “so the day after?” he asked. I nod yes, “good,” he smiled. I turned around and started to walk home, “where do you think you are going?” he questioned.

“Home,” I tell him as I continued to walk. Harry ran up to me, “walking this time of night,” he stated. I nodded and kept walking, Harry grabbed my arm, “like hell you are,” he said angrily at me. I get out of his grip, “why are you mad at me?” I asked. Harry looks at the floor and takes in a deep breath, “why do you want to walk home alone in the dark?” he asked back.

“Because I’m not scared,” I admitted. Harry emerald eyes look right into mine, “why aren’t you scared? I’m scared of what hides in the dark,” I could hear hurt in his voice when he spoke. Did Harry care what could happen to me? I felt guilt and anger inside me, “because Harry life sucks,” I snapped as I ran off. I could hear Harry call my name, but I never stopped until I was home.

When I got home my dad was passed out on the kitchen floor. I wake him up and move him to his bed, “you’ll never be your mother,” he tells me as I shut the door. I walk back into the kitchen an start picking up the beer cans. This is why I’m not scared of anything Harry; I live with the boogie man all my life. I lost my mum when I was six to a hit and run. My dad blames me, because I left my bag at my friends. So my mum walked to pick it up, but as she crossed the road a drunk driver hit her and drives off. They left my mum to die there all alone. They got the guy the next day after his mate told the police. It still don’t help that he is alive in jail, while my mum still dead.

On my day off I cleaned the house up, which won’t last long. My dad was at work so he looked normal to everyone else. However when he got home he was straight into his beer. Then it was back to being my fault, “your mum would still be here if you just remembered your fucking bag!” he yelled. I picked up my keys, phone and my iPod and walked out the door. I walked to the park and sat down on a bench, I sat there for a while, I didn’t cry I was over that emotion. I looked at the time and I thought he be passed out by now or too drunk to notice that I’m home. When I walked in he was watching TV, so I snuck passed him to my bedroom. I changed and laid into bed, I thought to myself tomorrow is a better day.

The next day I went to work to face Harry for running off on him. When I walked in he was serving a customer, relief went over him when he saw me. I smile at him hoping everything alright between us. He gave me a small smile and I could tell that he was not happy with me. I went in the back to put my bag away, “good morning Lucy,” June the other owner of the bakery said to me.

“Morning,” I say back. I grabbed my apron off the hook and put it on, and then I washed my hands. I went back out to the front to serve, “how can I help you?” I asked this couple. I take their order and handed it to them. As I was putting the money in the till Harry came up behind me, “don’t you ever do that to me again,” he said in a stern voice. I turn around to see that he was serious and his eyes where dark, “I’m ok Harry,” I tell him. As I looked at him I realized that I must have scared him when I ran off, “I don’t think you are,” he huffed. Then another customer came in and Harry served them.

After an hour of not talking to each other and serving customers. June called us into the back of the bakery. When we got there she had ten boxes next to her, “I need you to take these to the high school,” she explained. She handed Harry the address and the order paper. Harry didn’t talked to me as we loaded the bakery van up. Harry gets into the driver’s side and slams the door. I jump in on the other side and look at him as I close the door. Harry takes his apron off, “do you hate life today?” I asked.

“No just you,” he replied. His words hurt a little bit, but I understood. I was used to it anyway, “welcome to the list,” I say. Harry looks at me, “you have a list?” he questioned. I slowly nodded yes, “I’m only on it until you stop walking home in the dark,” he tried to reassure me. Why was he trying to reassure me, “daydreamer seatbelt please,” he smiled. I do my seatbelt up, “that why I don’t like you walking home in the dark by yourself. You always in your thoughts,” he smiled. We start to drive, after a while I broke the silence, “I’m sorry, it just been me for a longtime,” I admitted.

“How long?” he asked. I look out the window, “too long,” I replied. Harry grab my hand, “I’m sorry,” he says. Did he just say he was sorry? He has nothing to be sorry for it all my fault, “why are you sorry?” I questioned. As he was about to say something we arrived at the school. I jump out of the van to meet one of the staff.

When we done at the high school Harry stopped at the park I walk to nearly every night to get away from my dad, “I’m sorry that you have been alone for a longtime,” he admits to me. I look at him, “I’m fine,” I tell him. I don’t know what was coming over me, but I had to jump out of the van. I ran to a tree and sit down behind it so Harry couldn’t see me. Then it happen I started to cry, they wouldn’t stop coming down my face, “Lu?” I heard Harry shaky voice say. I look up at him, “are you alright?” he asked. I didn’t answer; it just made me cry more. Harry sat down next to me, “its ok Lu,” he reassures me as he puts his arm around me and grabbed my hand. I leaned into him without thinking, “I’m so sorry, I don’t normally cry,” I tell him. He pulled me in closer, “what do you mean you don’t cry?” he asked. I could tell that he was shocked about what I just said to him, “I gave up on it a longtime ago,” I replied. Harry runs his thumb over my knuckles, “what happen to you a longtime ago?” he wondered. I knew he was going to ask, but I'm still not ready to tell anyone, “bad things,” I replied. Harry placed his chin on the top of my head, “I understand,” he tells me. What was Harry doing to me? I haven’t cried since I was eleven. All it took was I’m sorry from him and now I’m this mess.

We sat there until I stop crying, “We all good?” Harry asked me. I nod yes as he wiped away my tears that stained my face. Harry helped me up, “good, because we are late,” he smiled. As we walking back to the van Harry put his arm around my waist, “I’m here for you Lu,” he tells me. I held back on some tears that wanted to come out again. Harry needs to stop being nice to me or I’ll end up in a mess with myself.

When we got back to the bakery we both got told off. Now we both closing up, which meant cleaning and getting ready for tomorrow again. Harry smiled when June left, “more bread tonight?” he asked. I smiled back at him, “I was thinking of something else,” I smiled.

I made a small chocolate cake to say thank you to Harry for putting up with me today. Harry got us pizza, because he said we needed real food since we skipped lunch today. We sat there and ate are food and talked about things we liked. Which was nice to get to know Harry and not shut him out, “how can you like that football team?” he asked. I smiled at him, “because I like the underdogs,” I explained. He smiled back, “maybe we should go to a match then?” he asked. I started to clean up, “so you can see my team kick butt?” I asked. He smile got bigger as he helped me clean up, “no see why you like them so much,” he admitted. I laughed, “I would like that, I haven’t been for a while,” I say.

When we finished work and walk outside, “now you have two choices: you let me drive you home or I walk you home?” he asked me. I smiled at him, “what if I say no to both?” I asked him. Before I could run he grabs me, “I’ll drag you kicking and screaming,” he tells me. I started to laugh, “but I like to see you try,” I smirked. Harry grips me tighter, “I like to see you try,” he chuckled. I tried to get out of his grip, but it was no use. He was quite strong, “ok,” I sighed. Harry still didn’t let me go, “good, but still not letting you go until you’re in the car,” he smiled. We walk over to his car and he gets the keys out of his pocket with one of his hands. I try to move and Harry drops the keys as he puts both arms around me again, “nice try but I have a plan,” he tells me. Harry undid his belt and put it threw two of my belt loops and does it back up, “now hands on my shoulders,” he tells me. I put my hands on his shoulders and he smiled. Then he bent over to pick up his keys off the floor. However because I was attached at his hips it pulled me down to the ground, as well as Harry on top on me. It hurt when I hit the floor, “ow, that hurt,” I exclaimed with my eyes shut. Harry quickly moves all his weight onto his arms, “I’m so sorry,” he apologizes. I start to laugh, “I’ll be fine,” I reassured him. When I opened my eyes Harry face was only inches away from mine. His beautiful green eyes looked worried, “you sure?” he asked.

“My back hurts,” I admitted. Harry pulls me up and undid his belt from us, “if you wanted me go this bad all you had to do was ask,” I laughed. Harry started to laugh, “I did,” he laughed. But it didn’t last long, “but you sure you’re alright?” he asked. He placed his hand on my shoulder, “Harry I’m fine,” I reassured him again. A couple walks past and gave us this disgusting look then kept walking, “what was there problem?” Harry questioned. I look down at Harry and his belt was hanging off. Harry notice what I was looking at, “it also don’t help that your hair a mess too,” he smiled as he tucks a piece of my hair behind my ear. I tried to smooth it down, “now let’s get you home,” Harry said as he opened the car door for me. I was not going to try and run, because it would hurt too much. I got in and Harry ran to the other side of the car, however before we got in he took the rest of his belt off, “so where too?” he asked me as he threw his belt on the back sit.

“You know that park we went to today?” I asked. Harry nods, “near there,” I say as I looked down. I hated my rundown neighborhood and what people think of me because I lived there, “so you live in a bad neighborhood, that doesn’t make you in a gang or a hooker. I think you’re a beautiful rose in the weeds,” Harry tells me. I smile to say my thanks, “now let’s get you home,” he says.

On the way home we didn’t talk much until, “do you get paid less than me?” Harry asked. I shake my head a little, “No, why?” I questioned. I wonder why he asked that, “because I live in apartment near town and you live out here,” he replied. I look out the window, “I live with my dad,” I admitted. Harry looks at me, “oh is he sick or something?” he asked. I was not comfortable talking about my dad, “both,” I replied.

I directed Harry to my house, “so are you working tomorrow?” he asked. I nod yes, “good,” he smiled. He undid his seatbelt, “what are you doing?” I asked. I started to panic a little bit, “walking you to your door,” he replied. I smiled at him, “I’m fine from here,” I say. He looks at me like he not going to push it, “ok,” he reluctantly says. I get out of the car and walk to my door, before I went in I turn around a give Harry a wave.
