Those Eyes

Chapter One

The song for this chapter is Everything by Michael Buble.

I’m sitting here in this church, listening to Nina’s mom speak about her daughter in way that would make you believe she actually gave a damn. It makes me sick that she’s putting on this charade; like she even cared for Nina. She did have a few things right though, Nina sure knew how to make someone smile, even if she was on the verge of tears, and Nina most certainly loved with every ounce of her heart and soul.

I remember the first time I saw Nina. She had this heart stopping smile plastered across her face. The first time I saw it in person was at one of those teen award shows. Nina had been nominated for choice actress and won, with flying colors I imagine.

She had burst onto the movie scene with a stand out role in a new Tim Burton film. I had seen her on various magazine covers and in numerous television interviews. I always thought she was fit, but never really thought any more about her, until that night at the awards show.

She stumbled up the stairs and to the microphone awaiting her. She flashed her million dollar smile, a smile that actually reached her eyes unlike some of her counterparts. She accepted her award with grace, she didn’t act overly shocked that she won, but she wasn’t a bitch about it either. She kept her speech short and to the point and returned to her seat a few rows ahead of me. I didn’t pay attention on the rest of the award show; I just stared at the back of her beautiful head the rest of the night, trying to come up with an excuse to talk to her.

Louis pulled on my arm, informing me that we had won an award. I threw a smile on my face and we made our way up to the stage to accept our award. When it was my turn to speak I leaned into the microphone and locked eyes with Nina, she smiled up at me. I said my thank yous, not once breaking eye contact with her. She had these mysterious deep chocolate brown eyes. She was gracious to everyone that she came in contact with, but I could tell that those eyes were hiding something. I had this overwhelming need to know what those secrets were.

Unfortunately I didn’t formally meet her that night. Or maybe I was fortunate for not meeting her that night, because I don’t think I would change how I met her for anything.

We formally met a few months later while I was back home in London. I was at an opening for a new club in the city when I saw her walk through the doors. She had that smile she was known for plastered across her face, but I could tell that this time the smile didn’t reach her eyes.

“Hey Nick, I’ll be right back.” I shouted through the music to one of my best mates.

He nodded an okay and I made my way over to her. She had on a tight sliver dress with a plunging neckline. Her skin was bronzed, the makeup on her eyes matched her dress and shoes, and her hair fell in dark waves around her face. She looked beautiful, even completely made up like that.

“Hi, I’m Harry.” I said, extending my hand to hers.

“Nina.” She said, returning the hand shake, with her signature smile, but it still didn’t meet her eyes.

“Can I buy you a drink?”

“Um.” She hesitated, looking to her friend standing to the right of her. “Just water is fine.” She finished, looking back at me.

“Water?” I questioned, and instantly regretted it. I sounded rude.

“Yeah, I don’t drink.” She explained, short and to the point. I liked that about her, she said what she meant, and meant what she said.

“Okay.” I said, nodding.

After numerous glasses of water, Nina and I had made our way out to the rooftop terrace, leaving her friends as well as mine, behind.

We were sitting on a white couch in the corner of the terrace, with a view of London below, and lanterns flickering around us. We talked about nonsense but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I was enjoying her presence, and as far as I could tell she was enjoying mine as well.

“I’m serious; Tim had a cockroach crawling on his arm. It was one of the cockroaches that we needed for the scene, but he just grabbed it of his arm and ate it!” She laughed, leaning onto my shoulder. Her laughing was intoxicating; it was a sound I wanted to hear every day for the rest of my life.

“That’s disgusting.” I laughed.

“I know, and then he tried to get me to eat one.”

“You didn’t, did you?”

“Of course not! Like you said, that’s disgusting. But then for the rest of the time we shot the movie he would constantly hide rubber cockroaches all over the set so I would find them.”

“At least they were rubber.” I laughed again.

“Thank god, but then he gave me a wrap present, and it was a box full of live roaches!” She cringed at the memory.

We continued to talk for only-god-knows-how-long, but we were interrupted when her friend came to find us.

“Nina, we have to go. You have to be up early for an interview tomorrow.” Her friend told her.

“Okay, I’ll meet you outside in a minute.”

Her friend sighed and retreated back downstairs.

“Sorry, but I guess I have to go.” She said, with a hint of a frown on her lips.

“It’s okay. How long are you in London?”

“Um, for another week, I think.”

“We should get together sometime, if you have time.”

“Trust me, I’ll make time. It was nice talking to someone about nothing. I always find myself talking about my next project, before I’m even finished with my current one.”

“So I’m guessing that girl wasn’t a friend?”

“Not really, she’s my publicist. She’s nice… when she wants to be.”

I chuckled at her honesty. “Well here let me give you my number, and we can get together when you have time.”

She handed me her phone. “That sounds good.”

@Ciao Niccie

You don't have any idea how much your feedback means to me. :) Thank you so much. It makes me happy to see that this story will stay with you. I could have been more descriptive, but I thought that it would take away from the rawness of the story. And I also wanted the readers imagination to flow with my own.

It's perfectly fine that you listened to Skyskraper, I', just happy that you listened to music at all, since it is a big part of the story.

I earnestly implore you to heed my words in their literal and true form... I have never stumbled upon a story, regardless the length, that has moved and stirred such compassion for a character, both characters, like this one. When I read about people crying in their comments, I am skeptical at times, but today I did. It's bittersweet. And although it was dark, it had a different essence to it . . . I almost can't describe it. But this was beautiful and I truly felt like I captured what you were eager to express in this masterpiece. I hope more people recognize and praise you for this story. It deserves more votes than the repetitive scripts that linger on here... This story will haunt me, in a good way.

p.s. I cheated by listening to skyscraper on chapter 11, I was a mess.

Chpater 1: This is a different way to start a story, but I feel the sad intro sets a good platform for the rest of the chapters, which I like. It's sobering. I like the glimpse of normal and cute conversation, but then I'm reminded of the beginning again... Okay on with the show....chap 2....
