Prologue: A New Direction
It had almost been two years since Derek had passed. Two long difficult years for Karmina and she was just now starting to get use to Derek not being around.Everything around her, she some how managed to link back to Derek. She sat there in the desolate kitchen staring at the burn stain at the edge of the stove.
Once about three years ago, she and her mother, Natasha had began arguing about whether she was allowed to go out with Derek that night. Natasha had not beenpaying attention and dinner caught on fire. This night marked the beginning ofthe many rifts in between her and her parents. Part of it had to do with Derek but it was mainly because they were religiously conservative and overbearing.They constantly forced her to do as they pleased. She was required to have a 4.0 gpa and take any advanced placement class available. According to them she was to go to Darthmouth to be premed. Never once had they bothered to ask her what she wanted to do. She once had tried to tell them she wanted to go to oxford and
become a writer but they shut her down. Karmina thanked them for all they provided for her, due to them she was fluent in three languages. But she had had enough, and when Derek offered an escape route, she jumped at the chance.
Derek had snuck in her room one night during summer vacation. He had never been the student that Karmina was, not because he wasn't smart but more for his love to joke around. He had come from a long line of military generals. So he had long ago decided that's what he would do. They were two months shy of when he would leave for bootcamp, Derek was a year older than her and had recently
graduated. Karmina stared at his almond brown eyes he was looking at her very seriously, like he was seeing her for the first time. "I love you," he whispered as he brush a stray hair away from her face. Karmina's heart sped up as he leaned in and kiss her softly. "Karmina, marry me please? I love you and I don't want to be away from you for four years. Please?" His eyes searching Karmina's for an answer. She sat there stunned at his question. She had loved Derek but for so long she had been forced to believe that he parents plan was her only option. But now here was Derek, giving her a chance at something else. She
smiled and nodded "I'd love to be your wife."
The day after her eighteenth birthday, they married at the courthouse and she left home and never looked back. They lived on a military base for three months before he deployed to Afghanistan and never came back.
Derek had life insurance and had left Karmina all the money. She spent the past two years working on her novel while traveling the globe. She was now back at home to gather the last of her stuff before she moved to the west coast. There was a publisher in Los Angeles who wanted to work on her book with her. She
quickly packed the last of her memories into the truck before her parents came home. She hadn't seen them since she left to marry Derek and wasn't ready to see them now. Karmina set on towards her first real attempt at a new life.
