The Replacement

Betrayed Trust

"May I call upon Ms Leah Harrison to the witness table please," Wonda announced.

Once Leah sat at the witness table, Wonda continued, "Ms Harrison, could you enlighten the court on your job scope as my client's secretary?"

Leah looked at Harry and then back at Wonda before she replied, "I am in charge of all his scheduling, accounts and escorting him at various events."

"How many accounts does the company have, Ms Harrison?"

"2 in particular. One that is for transactions to suppliers and another for transactions from the clients. But I am only in charge of checking transactions. We have an external accountant who does the transactions itself."

"I believe so, Ms Harrison that only a practicing accountant is allowed to make the transactions but ultimately the accountant follows your instructions, am I correct?"

"Yes but they all must be approved by Harry first."

"It is stated in your revised employment agreement that transactions that are below 500 pounds may be approved by you without his perusal, Ms Harrison. Could you explain the staggered transactions of 200 to 500 pounds made from 15th February to 20th March?"

"That was quite some time ago, I can't remember unless I take a look at the record."

"Here," Wonda handed over a copy to the judge and to Leah. "February 15th, 270 pounds, February 17th, 350 pounds...Ms Harrison, do I need to say them all? In fact, the total sum of 160,490 pounds were transferred to the same account and all these transactions were approved by you-"

"I did not steal the company's money!" Leah exclaimed.

"Ms Harrison, I did not say you did. Tell us, where did the money go to?"

After much hesitation, Leah finally blurted out, "it was Greg! He...he...forced me to do it or he would make Harry take away my job."

"Greg Robinson, the company's Senior Partner?"

"Yes, he said he would make Harry fire me."

"Ms Harrison, as far as I know, you ran away from that very job you were afraid to lose if you didn't comply to Mr Robinson."

"He...he...was going to make Harry fire me by telling him about my relationship with Jacob. And that also means Jacob would lose his job. I didn't want that to happen."

"How about those money that were taken from several victims namely Ms Jessica Watson, Mr Henry Bane and Ms Patricia Lawson? You know these people, don't you?"

"Objection, your honour!" Leah's lawyer called out.

"Overrule, Ms Harrison, answer the question," the judge ordered.

"Yes, I know them. Jessica was my housemate. Henry and Patricia are Harry's business acquaintances."

"How were these illegal transactions made possible?"

"Harry signed them! Not me!"

"My client stated that he did not recall signing them and he also stated that he wouldn't have allowed transactions from accounts that are not registered as a customer. Wasn't it your job, Ms Harrison, to go through every single finance document before they were handed over to the accountant?"

"Objection, your honour!" Leah's lawyer called out again.

"Overrule," the judge replied.

"I am not going to answer your question," Leah stated.

"This trial will recess until further notice. Mr Greg Robinson is expected to be present on the next trial," the judge announced.

-

"Jacob!" Jessica called out, running towards him.

"What do you want, Jess? Huh? See, I told you so? I told you not to trust Leah? Huh?" he blurted out when he turned around.

"No...Jacob, I wasn't going to say that," she told him as she pulled him into a hug.

"I'm...sorry, Jess," he croaked, tightening his embrace.

"You didn't know, Jacob. It's alright. Wonda said they're probably going to pull the case from court and make a settlement with Leah's lawyer and well, Greg's later on. I believe Harry's not going to press any charges on you, Jacob, don't worry about that."

"No, Jess. I don't give a shit about what he's gonna do to me. I still don't trust him and you should know that. Please, Jess, just get away from him."

"What has he done that make you hate him so much, Jacob?" Jessica retorted. "I know how he was, he's changed, Jacob."

"Why not you ask him yourself?" Jacob said as he looked over Jessica's shoulder. "Huh, Mr Styles?"

Jacob walked away and left Jessica standing with Harry by the sidewalk. Jessica tucked her hair behind her ears and adjusted her coat, avoiding any eye contact. "What is it that you're not telling me, Harry?" she asked looking down with her arms crossed.

"If it was important that you know and affects our relationship, I would tell you, Jess," he assured her. "Please, just let it go."

Jessica looked up into Harry's eyes and glared at him. "Let it go? Seriously, Harry. If Jacob thinks it's important that I know then I believe him. Even if you think it is not important. Harry, in case you didn't know, there isn't a relationship if there isn't trust. Why won't you just tell me?"

Harry ran his hand through his hair and let out a heavy sigh. "Jessica, come on, I love you and fine, I will tell you but when it's the right time. Not right now. You might overreact."

"Harry. Tell me now or I will walk away, right now," Jessica warned.

Harry rubbed his face with his hands and then tucked his hands into the pocket of his coat. "You have to promise me something. That you will not overreact and you will let me explain."

Jessica shut her eyes and breathed in. "Yes, I promise," she breathed out.

Harry looked down at his shoes, as though he was embarrassed to say what he was about to say.

"I'm married."

Jessica threw a slap on Harry's face, tears forming in her eyes.
