The Replacement

The First Trial

"Tony, guess what? We're meeting Daddy at the playground!" Jessica told the little boy, pinching his rosy cheeks. He giggled and clapped his hands delirious with joy.

Wonda and Jessica were having lunch the following Sunday with Tony. The last time Jessica saw Tony was when he was only a few months old. Although Wonda and Tony's father did not end up getting married as planned, Jessica was glad they made sure they spend their Sundays together as a family Tony deserved.

"Daddy!" Tony cheered as he ran towards his father who was standing by the swing. Jessica wrapped her left arm around Wonda's right arm and walked over to join them.

"Nice to see you again, Jessica," the man greeted as they approached him.

"Nice to see you too, Louis," Jessica replied with a smile.

"You ladies go ahead, I'll take Tony," Louis offered and took Tony in his arms. "What do you say, buddy? Down the slide first?"

Tony wrapped his small arms around Louis's neck and nodded his head. Louis kissed Tony's forehead and headed towards the slide.

"Let's take a sit over there," Wonda gestured to the bench.

Wonda's POV
"Jacob called me last week," I blurted out without hesitation as soon as we sat. I could see Jessica's face tensed up before she took a deep breath and placed her hand on mine.

"What did he say?" she asked.

"He asked me how you were doing."

"What? How dare he."

"Jess, I could tell he was sincere about it. He knew that you wouldn't want to talk to him after everything that has happened but," I paused and squeezed her hand. "He's coming back, Jess."

Jessica was frowning and I could tell she wanted me to continue. "The first trial is coming Wednesday. He and Leah have been called to be present," I paused again. "It's not going to be easy, I know that, even for me, Jess. But Jacob can fend for himself and you have to let him face the consequences if he is found guilty."

"I know, Wonda," she finally replied. "I'm just afraid of the things I'm gonna hear in court."

"Right now, we just have to make sure that Harry tells me everything he know and be honest about everything. And be strong when you are called to testify."

Harry's POV

"Ms Watson. Could you tell us what happened exactly the day you found out that your account has been depleted," the opposing lawyer called.

I watched as Jessica cleared her throat and recount that very day. I knew how difficult it was to be in her position and I admire her courage and ability to remain calm despite it all.

"So Mr Styles appeared at your door the moment you found out and insisted that he file a report against your brother and Ms Harrison?" the opposing lawyer pressed on. What?

"Objection! Your honour, he is making false accusations against my client," Wonda hissed as he stood up from her seat.

"Overruled. Ms Watson, please answer the question," the judge told Jessica.

Jessica looked at me and then at her brother. "No, he didn't insist. He suggested and I agreed."

"And what made you agree to him? I believe Mr Styles is a man known for his threats."

Oh no, I know what he is doing.

"He did not threaten me in any way," Jessica defended.

"Then, why did you agree then? Was it because you were attracted to him, Ms Watson?"

"Objection, your honour!" Watson roared. Jessica's face was turning pale. Oh, baby, I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

"Sustained. Ms Watson, please state your reason," the judge announced.

"I agreed because," she paused. "I knew that my brother and Leah ran away with the company's money so when I started to recall the night I agreed to move in with Leah and when I saw the photos of my brother and her together, the suspicion grew on me and then it all clicked."

"I see," the opposing lawyer went. "And who was the one who told you about that, Ms Watson?"

Jessica looked at me, her eyes full of pain. "Harry did."

"Interesting. When Mr Styles told you that, with evidences against my clients, did he tell you why he didn't just file a report then?"

I could feel my forehead wet with cold sweat. Again, I felt that rush of guilt for putting Jessica through this. She did not deserved to be questioned for her actions which I clearly forced her into then.

"I didn't want my brother to go behind bars for it and I offered to pay him back with my savings, which at that point I didn't know was no longer there but he said he didn't want me to be the one returning the money," she paused.

"But instead he got you to quit your job and replace his secretary in return. Am I right Ms Watson?" No. Don't use that word on her.

She looked down, clearly embarrassed at that statement. "Yes."

"You had a promising career in the media and I'm sure there must be a reason why you complied to him. Why is that, Ms Watson? Was it because you were attracted to Mr Styles, Ms Watson?"

"No!" Jessica yelled, tears forming in her eyes.

"Mr Styles has a reputation when it comes to women, are you sure that is not the reason, Ms Watson?"

Please, don't do this to her. Oh, Jess...

"Objection!" Wonda shouted, slamming her palm on the table.

"Overruled, Mr Mitchell, let the witness answer the question," the judge warned.

"It's because I love my brother Jacob and I didn't want him to be in prison!" Jessica raised her voice and blurted out in frustration, pointing to Jacob. "Because I love you Jacob and I can't believe you did this to me!" She finally broke down in tears.

The court was filled with murmurs and the judge slammed her gavel. "Order, order!"

When the court silenced, I looked at Jessica and all I wanted to do was to embrace her in a hug and tell that everything was going to be alright and that she was really brave.

"The court will recess and the trial will continue tomorrow at 3pm," she announced.

Jessica's POV

All I wanted to do was to leave. Leave and be left alone for me to gather my thoughts and get myself together. After everything that has happened, my mind was in a complete mess and I thought I would have handled it well.

"Jessica! Jess!" I heard a familiar voice calling behind me but I continued walking down the steps. I wanted to get away from everyone as soon as possible.

"Jessica! Please! Wait!" he shouted again and then I felt his arm around my waist, turning me to face him. "Jessica..."

"I need to clear my mind, Harry," I said looking away from him.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry you had to go through that," he apologised profusely and stoked my cheeks with his thumbs.

"Harry," I paused and looked up at him. "I can't do this right now. Just let me clear my thoughts."

"I'm not letting you go, Jess," he whispered, pressing his forehead against mine.

I placed my hand on his chest and pushed him away. "Harry. Please."

He sighed and nodded as he released me from his grip. I turned away and rushed down the steps before flagging a cab.

I saw from the corner of my eyes that he was still standing at the spot I left him, watching the cab drove away. I took my phone from my bag when I felt it vibrated.

I didn't think you would fall for that dick, Jess. He's going to do the same to you. Don't trust him. I love you too, sis. - Jacob

Notes

Whoa that was intense.
And who thinks Daddy Louis is adorable? I'll put up a photo of Mr Tomlinson and Tony soon.
