Traces of Your Touch (An AU Fanfiction)

Chapter 45

Aria had tried to sneak out of her room to try and eavesdrop on her mother and Louis’ conversation but her mother was bustling around the kitchen, so she had to retreat back to her own room. If her mother caught her doing anything else against her will, she’d have Aria’s head. Thus, she lay on her bed; headphones plugged into her ear and tried not to think.

From the corner of her eye she saw the door slowly open and quickly removed her headphones, sitting up straight. She knew she’d face another round of bashing from her mother but she was curious to know what Beatrice had said to Louis. Beatrice entered with a smile on her face and Aria let go of the breath she didn’t know she was holding. However, Beatrice’s reason for smiling walked in with her and Aria’s back stiffened instantly.

Louis walked in behind Beatrice and stood in the doorway as Aria’s mother began speaking, but he didn’t meet Aria’s eye. It looked like he was still feeling guilty for his previous mistake. That made Aria relax a little.

“Honey, I’ve spoken to Louis and I think you two are due a serious conversation together. I’ll be off to sleep.” Beatrice announced and began walking away, but stopped to address Louis. “Louis dear, you’re free to stay here as long as you want.”

Aria’s jaw dropped and she turned the shade of a beet root. Could her mother be any more embarrassing? However, Louis just nodded and gave Beatrice a small smile as if it wasn’t awkward at all. Aria mentally thanked him and watched her mother walk out of the room, closing the door shut.

Louis remained by the door though but this time he raised his head to look at Aria.

“Hey.” Louis whispered and gave her a small smile.

“Hey.” Aria replied, smiling back at him.

His smile grew a little when he saw that she had warmed up since their last meeting.
“So…lesbian porn. Huh?” He crossed his arm and leant against the doorframe, biting down on his lips to stop himself from laughing.

Aria’s eyes widened and she blushed furiously, hiding her face in her palms and groaning. “She told you? I thought she’d atleast hide the details.”

“Oh no! She was very detailed with her descriptions.”

Aria groaned again and hid her face in a pillow.

“But it’s alright. I mean…I guess I have to go wig shopping now. But that’s alright.”

It took Aria a minute to decipher what he had meant but once she did, she began chuckling and threw a pillow at Louis. Louis pretended to have missed it and let it hit his face.

“Ouch. Woman, are you trying to kill me?”

“Maybe.”

“What’d I do to deserve being pillow’ed to death?”

“You disappeared!”Aria fought back, a huge smile plastered on her face. She had missed the playful banter between herself and Louis.

“Touché!” Louis nodded his head, walked towards the bed and sat on the edge.

“I didn’t know about your dad. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.” Aria gave him a sad smile and shrugged her shoulders like it didn’t matter but Louis could tell that she was pretending.

“Have you tried talking to him?”

“No. Mom doesn’t want me to contact him.”

“What about your brother?”

“He doesn’t know a lot of things, Louis. And I intend to keep it that way.”

“Fair enough. But define ‘a lot of things’.”

Aria smiled, knowing he wouldn’t let this go.

“Other than our family falling apart? I just found out that my mom’s a homophobe, Louis.”

“O-kay?”

“Ryan’s attracted to men.”

“Oh.” It was the only reply Louis had.

“He hasn’t told anyone cause he’s scared people will judge him. I guess that is one of the reasons why he went away for college.”

“Then how’d you find out?”

“I caught him making out with a guy.” Aria responded, chuckling when she saw Louis’ impressed expression.

“You know, I think the reason why things are only getting worse is because there is a gap in communication between you guys. I mean, I’m sure things’ll start looking up if you spoke to your dad or even Ryan. He deserves to know too, Aria. Before it’s too late.”
Aria lowered her head and tried to blink away the tears that were forming behind her eyes.

“What would I say to my dad?”

“That you need him, babe. Just tell him the truth.” Louis’ voice held sympathy and Aria looked up at his face, allowing the first drop of tear to roll down her cheeks.

“But then he wins. He just leaves us like we don’t even m- matter. Like we’re something h- he can dispose off just cause he can’t be b- bothered. And all for what at the end? M- money?”

Aria had began hiccupping by the end of her speech and Louis wanted to pull her into a hug but refrained himself, knowing that things had changed between the two of them. They weren’t the same as they were back in the camping trip, where Louis had held her as she’d cried her heart out. He walked to her window and swallowed as memories began flooding in. Memories that always left him feeling raw.

“Babe, I know it feels like you’re giving up but you fight for the things you love. You don’t just let them go. You never know when you wake up one morning and find out that they’re gone forever. Never to be found. And you wish for one more chance to have them back. One more chance to see their faces. One more chance to tell them how much you love and miss them. But you can’t. Cause they’re gone to a place of no return. You hope that you could go there and bring them back, unsure if you’ll even find them. You spend the rest of your life hoping for that day to come when you’ll be reunited with them. And those are the moments when you realize that you were too late.”

Louis’ voice shook by the end of his speech and Aria could tell that he was trying his best not to break. She was too stunned to say something for the first few minutes but as his words slowly sank in, Aria couldn’t stop herself from asking, “Who was she, Louis?”

He remained silent, staring out of the window and Aria knew he wouldn’t answer her. Who was this mysterious girl? What had happened between the two of them before she passed away? Had Louis really loved her that much? Aria’s stomach dropped for some odd reason at the last question.

Louis began turning and Aria sat straighter on her bed. She watched Louis look around the room as if in deep thought before walking towards an object, grabbing it and offering it to Aria. She looked down to notice that it was her cell phone.

“Do it before it’s too late, babe.” His voice was solemn. Aria had never seen Louis without a smile on his face and it felt like she was talking to a whole different person.

“Louis, this is different. You won’t underst-”

“On the contrary, I do understand. I’ve seen one my closest mates go through the same situation and watched as he made the same mistake you’re making. I was young then and didn’t know what to do. But I know better this time. And I won’t let you go through the same.”

Her thoughts instantly shifted to Harry. Now she understood how Harry knew everything so well. His father had left him, just like hers. That is what he had meant when they had laid side by side in the huge deserted building.

“Why?” Aria knew Louis didn’t need to do this and yet he was here for her. She watched him bend down to her height and bring his face closer to hers. She felt his hot breath against her face and watched as he swallowed. Louis raised his hand and gently brushed her jaw with his knuckles in a caress.

“Cause I care about you, Aria.”

She watched his pupils dilate and knew what was coming even before he started leaning towards her.

“Louis, I can’t.” Aria announced, and backed away from him. She had promised Harry that she’d clear things out with Louis and even though this wasn’t the best time, she knew she couldn’t kiss him.

Louis blinked a couple of times before standing up straight and shaking his head.

“I’m sorry, Aria. I just- I know you need some time.”

“No, Louis. It isn’t that.” Aria whispered, looking anywhere but at Louis. She didn’t know how to do this without sounding like a bitch but she knew it had to be done. “I just- I don’t think it’ll work out between us anymore.”

She didn’t dare raise her head as the minutes passed in complete silence. She wanted to see his expression, wanted to know how he had taken it but she was too ashamed to.

“You like someone else.” His voice was a shadow of a whisper and Aria slowly raised her head, biting down on her lips. How he knew, she had no idea. She was afraid of how he’d react as she looked into his eyes, which were void of any expression.

“Louis, I-“

She was cut off by Louis offering her the cell phone once again as he plastered a fake smile on his face and whispered, “Call your dad, Aria. I’m sure he’ll be happy to hear from you.”

She felt the guilt overwhelm her and bit down on her lips to stop herself from crying. He’d been kind to her even though she had hurt him. She quietly took the phone from his hand and dialed the number she had saved as her grandma’s. From the corner of her eyes she noticed Louis begin to walk away and she quickly grabbed his hand before letting go.

She didn’t want him to leave. She was scared of calling her father and the guilt of hurting Louis was suffocating her but strangely enough, she felt better when he was here with her. In other words, she didn’t want to be alone. Selfish as it may sound.

Louis looked down at her, gave her a small smile and shook his head. “You need to do this on your own, Aria.”

He began walking away without giving Aria a single glance. He should’ve known it would come to this. He should’ve guessed before he got in so deep. He swallowed down the emotion that was beginning to choke him and walked out of Aria’s room. The moment he closed the door, he leant against it to hear her voice.

“Hello, grandma? Is daddy there?”

He smiled to himself, knowing that he had done the right thing. He took out his own phone to do something he should’ve done a long time ago. He searched for his best friend’s name and typed out, ‘I need to talk to you. Now.”
